Fitting windows / screens 2 door MK 2 Escort
Hi Guys
Not urgent but can anyone let me know just how hard it is to refit side glass and front / rear screens , I am about to look at refitting some. It looks and sounds easy but is it best left to the pro's or as simple as grabbing some para-chord and detergent?
Cheers Craig

Thanks JVC063 , I hoped someone might say that , I assume that if someone adds pressure to the outside the process should be quite simple , anything the rubbers need before use , leave in the sun or hot water first ?

you need some 5mm Rope that you place in the rubber then you have one person inside pulling the rope and one person putting pressure on the outside! its pretty easy

...............well, I recon, its better to use pvc cable approx 1.5mm2.
put sealer on and in groove first etc.
Have helper, push on where cble is being pulled into car.
15 mins tops, to do.
gets pretty messy,............ but cleans up with mineral turps etc.
I don't use the filler, but would fit with in-place.

Hi Craig,
Like everyone says it is very simple, once you have done it once. With practice you can do it without any assistant at all.
1. Clean old hardened sealer from seal if you are reusing an old seal. I use turps, a flat blade screw driver to get int the groove and a rag. The turps won't hurt the seal itself.
2. Clean the aperture on the vehicle's body where the screen fits. Make sure the head lining overlap around the aperture is firmly glued to the car.
3. On a table top with the screen lying outside face downwards fit the seal to the glass and make sure fits evenly. I don't use the sealer until the screen is completely fitted as it becomes too messy and will tend to waste a lot of the sealer by fiddling. You will notice on the front and rear screens the seal won't sit along the bottom edge because of the curvature. I put masking tape on the outside face of the seal and pull the seal upwards so it sits firmly against the edge of the screen.
4. Locate the approximate top centre edge of the screen. On this centre place 4mm or 5mm nylon rope into the groove so there is about 300mm overhang hanging freely and use the screw driver to force the rope deep into the groove around the outside of the seal until you come to the bottom centre of the screen. Again allow about 300mm overhang. Cut the rope. Repeat around the opposite side starting from the top edge.
5. Double check all the rope is sitting deep in the groove by running the screw driver around once again. The 300mm overhang (which will be 2 pieces meeting on top and 2 pieces meeting on the bottom) should meet nicely on the centreline on the top edge and the bottom edge of the screen.
6. Get an assistant to help and pick up the screen on both the left hand edge and right hand edge, carefully so as not to disturb the seal. Place the screen into the vehicle's window aperture.
7. Centre evenly the screen into the aperture as best you can. Make sure the rope overhang is sitting INSIDE the cabin. A couple of firm slaps with your OPEN FLAT hand on the glass will help settle the glass.
8. From inside the car double check and make sure the window is centred relative to the window aperture, which will be easy to see.
9. Have your offsider put a little pressure on the window (not much otherwise he will crush the seal and make the job harder).
10. Get inside the car and SLOWLY pull one of the BOTTOM pieces of rope so that the seal starts to roll over the window aperture (the steel edge) and slides into place. Do about 300mm to 400mm along the edge. Then do the same to the opposite BOTTOM rope. Then continue with the first piece of rope until you get to the bottom corner of the windscreen. Use the flat blade screw driver to assist the rope to pull around the 90 degree bend and go upwards about 50mm or so. Repeat the opposite side.
11. Repeat this exact procedure along the top edge of the screen and then work down the sides of the screen. Your friend may need to use his OPEN hand to help slap the screen upwards or downwards to keep it centred.
If for some reason the rope slips and the seal doesn't want to roll over the edge, use the screwdriver to help prise it into place especially in the tight corners. Being careful not to tear the seal of course - it is only rubber!
12. Once the window is in place go around an firmly slap it with your OPEN hand to make sure it is settled.
13. Apply the sealer under the inside and outside edges (on the outside of the car) and wash up with turps. (make sure the turps doesn't affect paintwork though).
Remember if it doesn't work first time just pull the glass back out and start again.
JOB done!

Make sure you take off any rings they can crack the screen
