Duratec gearbox options
Apart from the obvious aftermarket bellhousings, are there any rear wheel drive gearboxes that will bolt up to the Duratec?
Thanks Craig

Yeah that is correct. The Duratec is a mazda motor.

Pity the ratios are crap on the five speed box. C/R gearsets are way too pricey, might as well stick with the t9.

I have some 2.98 first gear conversions coming for the T9 that at least give you a better first. New layshaft and input shaft only. Price TBA dependant on what Customs charge me. If you have cuppla big ones I can do a complete syncro box with a 2.48 first

The 6 speed delivered in local MX5's is heavy, bulky and not real nice. The Japanese MX5 5 speed fitted to the Duratec in JDM models is worth looking at. MXplus usually have a few - not cheap but. But might fit an auto tunnel.
Depending on what you intend to do with the motor, the type 9 has limited reliability behind a tricked Duratec with decent torque. Clubbie 7 guys chew thru even the h/d type 9 boxes -remember they only weigh 5-600kg as well hence much less strain than in an Escort!
Reckon you are better off sourcing a gearbox of your choice and assoc bellhousing - just my 2.2c worth. The Carrol housing and RX7 turbo box is a nice combo. Will be hard pressed to break one of these. And they fit even in a manual tunnel with a little bit of reshaping.
edit: meant to add, suspect the latter option might be cheaper than the MX5 or Type 9 options.

Had thought about the rx7 gbox, but as this wil be in a rally car I really want a c/r s/c gearset with a 2.39 or there abouts 1st gear. The price of a gearset for a t9 is much more affordable than anything I could find for the rx7 box.
I am happy to stand corrected though :-)

I understand the RX7 box is used fairly extensively in rallying -possibly because they are so strong. The RX7 s4/5 box out of the turbo rotary is the pick - webbed casing etc. Albins sell the CR gears - not sure $$ but I know they replace 5th with first, first becomes second etc and 4th becomes 5th and is retained as 1:1. Sounds odd but apprently works quite well.
After seeing what a Duratec can do to a HD type 9 in a light 500kg clubbie I suspect you might not want one in a rally car - but could be wrong.
Again Roger Carroll in Adel has quite a bit of experence with this box and mating it to a fairly worked Duratec engine. He also knows the Rocket and Type 9 boxes quite well and hence could give you a very informed opinion.

The albins gear is very good, but at $5330.00 for a gearset......OMG!!!. I could nearly buy a sequential box.
Tran-x have a c/r s/c gearset for a t9 for about 700 pounds. This seems to be a more viable road to go down to me.
Thanks Craig

Fair enough.
In that case can I interest you in a Type 9 with a CR complete with straight cut Quaife gear set. I am fairly certain it as a 2.7 first. The gearbox was recently totally rebuilt. Also comes with a new quick shift.
Titan bell housing to mate to the Duratec plus a dry sump which bolts to the titan - you will need this is you are looking to fit around the Escort cross member.
Other than mock building, all the items are new/unused.
Decided to go down a different route with a clubbie build hence why no further need.
Can't seem to send a PM so if you are interested perhaps call me mbl 0402 797 870. Ian

If anyone is looking for an alternative [%] gearbox for a duratec conversion, try the T5 gearbox out of the falcon (Holden [:o)] T5 has longer input). Quad4rods (google them) does a bellhousing for $475USD and postage is about $120USD...

Anyone thought about the 6sp box out of a VE commodore. Forget 1st gear, but the rest of the ratios are good, sudo C/R box that can handle the torque of a V6 ute?
Not expensive and should be easy to come by.
Hmmmmmmmmmm?
