Pinto Rear Main

Just wondering what sort of tooling people use to replace the rear main on a pinto?

What sealant is the best for installing?

    DO NOT PUT ANY SEALANT ON IT!! They dont need it and are more likely to leak if you do.

    A rear main is there to seal around the inside not the outside. You should never need to put anything around the outside of an interference fit seal like this.

    Fitting it ... Admitedly, they are a unpleasant individual to fit with the rear bearing cap in place as they are very easy to damage. If the engine is out i prefer to fit the seal before torquing up the rear cap. That way you can just sit it in place easily with your fingers.
    If you are doing it with the motor in the car you just have to be very patient and careful as you evenly tap it into place. In the past i have succesfully ground a leading edge on the engine side of the seal to help get it started.

    Take your time and dont be heavy handed.

    cheers mate....thats probably why its leaking now...there is a truck load of sealant in the area!!!

    Sadly the engine is in the car and will have to struggle to do it this way!!

    Roger,

    The wedges your refering too would be the wedges for the sump not the rear main?

    I am only planning to replace the seal and seal only nothing else.

    When I built my last Pinto, I used the old rear main seal against the new one, then put a piston ring compressor against the old one and a piece of timber across the ring compressor and tapped it in ever so gently that way. I don't remember using any sealant like Gdub pointed out.

    Man it was a patience game, every time a bit would go in, a little bit on the other side would come out again. [xx(] Was just so scared of pinching it.

    To remove (in car) I've had to screw self tappers into old seal to get some purchase
    I found a pvc stormwater socket type fitting at bunnings - od just smaller than seal od & about 60mm long - works well to drive in.
    I use loctite 641 to seal - medium strength for bearings, oil seals etc.
