Start up problems ??

Just trying to pinpoint why my Escort is difficult to start. The car is happy to turn over, but reluctant to fire up - especially if its be left to sit overnight or parked up for the day.

I'm leaning towards fuel. Carby or fuel pump??

Any quick checks I can do to confirm this? Can I find out if the needle/seat are worn without pulling the carb apart?

Its running standard 32/36 Carby. I dropped fuel down the throats of the carb this morning before I tried to start it - no big improvement in start up.

    The mixture screw at the base of the carby.
    Screw it all the way in, then turn it out two and one half turns out.

    Or check if the timing is advanced enough? not at t.d.c.

    Timing has been checked & Is OK.

    Just a thought - the Ignition coil - will they just die when they are hot, or can they be susectable when cold?

    I would be checking starter connections.
    Have you had the red dash light come on without the key on?
    The coil is not suppost to stay hot. Check the front two connections on the starter.

    Moreys upper cylinder lube in the petrol tank, seems to make the valve seats seal better

    Thanks for the tip Mark - wire had come off the starter. I wouldn't have been looking there because it was turning over - just wouldn't fire.
