Fuel & Temp Gauges not working

Was looking at a wiring diagram tonight and noticed there is a small voltage regulator in the instrument cluster that powers both fuel and temp gauges. It's an RS2000 with the factory fuel and temp gauges not working. Seems a bit too much of a coincidence that they both don't work. I have changed the temp sender and the instrument cluster as it had other problems. What are the chances of having 2 instrument clusters with dodgy voltage regulators?

Anyone seen this before?

    You answered your own question. If the voltage reg supplies power to both and the both guages are not working?? Then what would that tell you? If they both share the same ground it may be an issue too?
    But then what else shares the same ground??

    I too have a similar issue, mine are still working but just not reading correct and their readings fluctuate and they both fluctuate together and about the same rate. I am looking at pulling my dash out soon and getting it looked at, but didn't think of the ground wire which I mich have a look at first.

    Be very careful when 'testing' these guages. They are actually only 5 volt guages not 12v and work but receiving power in short bursts controlled by the voltage stabiliser on the back. Many people have burned out the guages by holding 12 volts to them so they can watch them go up and down. I suspect this may be what has happened on yours.

    I had the dash guages fixed in my old red RS by Ringwood speedo services a few years ago and they replaced the voltage stabiliser with an electronic unit. From memory it only cost $100 or so.

    mines still good.. somehow. i managed to let some of the smoke out of the temp gauge when changing the wiring around.
    finally fixing Glenns car? haha

    Thanks for the info Gareth. Ringwood speedos are great. I have used them for all my speedo / gauge repairs for nearly 20 years now. Nothing ever seems to be more than $100 to fix. Strange that.....

    I will be testing these gauges in situ so I wont have to worry about frying them. Although it is good to know that they only operate on 5v.
    Testing for a power supply only as the sender supplies the earth. Was just curious as to what I would do if it is the voltage regulator. Would you be able to remove one from another working instrument cluster and refit? I wonder if they are the same as all those L & XL clusters that get thrown out.
