coolant flow/ plumbing q's

right, so before dropping my new-er engine in, i want to get everything sorted out.

it has been suggested to me that i should use the water outlet on the EX side near cyl 4.

so if i run that to bottom pipe of heater core then top pipe to inlet, would that be fine?

the water pump i have has the inlet/outlet?- small pipe blocked off.
should i keep that or use another pump and a T piece between the water pump, rear block port and heater core.

does anyone know the thread size of that plug in block?

cheers

I have plumbed mine from the block to the heater core and then from the heater core to the water pump.
Avoid using the inlet manifold - just plug it up with a brass fitting.

James, I have done the same as Peter. I used a Commodore heater hose to go under the extractors. Not sure what the thread in the block is but I can tell you it is the same as the water outlet's on XE/XF Falcons as the T piece i used is from one of those. Kilcenny make brass ones..... KC 101 I think was the number for the single fitting from Bursons.

    Had a look today. It's a 3/8 NPT thread.

    holy thread revival batman.

I've come here to add some info re: plumbing the heater hose to the block instead of inlet manifold.

Easy to do, neatens up the engine bay BUT be prepared for an extra 10 mins of splutter from cold start up.

*taken from Whirlpool forum- Engines with carburettors have wet intake manifolds. That is, they flow fuel and air through the intake runners. This gives the fuel a long time to fall from the air stream and deposit on the runner walls. A bit of heat helps prevent this problem*

Moral of the story- Don't be alarmed when your Pinto runs like crap from cold after doing this mod!!!

Ratta, this post probably should have had a bit more info. Peters car & mine both run throttle body fuel injection so there is no need for the water outlet on the manifold. Fordsy's car runs twin sidedraughts so also not needed. And James was asking about a supercharged motor that he was installing.

So basically, standard manifold / carby - keep the water hoses running through the choke & manifold. Sidedraught carbies or throttle body injection - plug outlet on manifold & run heater to drain plug on block.

    Hope that helps.

    Cheers, Craig.

    Thanks Craig.

I have run mine to the block when I installed twin webers. I have since put the 32/36 back on but left heater hose running to the block. I have noticed a before and after difference from changing the plumbing in regards to cold running condition

Forget everything I said. There was sh!t in the carby causing the issues. Plumbing is fine. Running great now
