V6 Alternator
Does any one happen to know if there is a Bosch replacement for the Lucas alternator for a 1972 V6 Capri.

IIRC the Escort 2 litre one mounts up the same and is smaller lighter and has more amps. The plug at the back is different though, you need to split the connector and push the wires on individually.
I think I have a 65 amp alt for the V6 from a Sierra which gors straight on, the front casing looks a lot different to the old stock Lucas though

MINIBITS in Officer (Vic) were doing remanufactured Lucas alternators for the V6. They are like brand new and put out around 60amps. I bought one a year or more ago and it's been brilliant! Contact John at MINIBITS on 03 9707 1666 or 0412 403 050.

I think whilst the Lucas is the original part I think I am going down the replacing it with a Bosch alternator. JR is the Sierra any more robust than the original unit as the starter I currently have is well a little puffed out & why are the V6 starters so damn BIG ?? It would be great if some of the smaller gear reduction type starters would fit.

I bought a new lucas uprated alternater from UK. $120 delivered and if its chinese then there is a good chance it will be much better than the lucas built one. There are gear reduction starters available for the v6, that would be the way to go.

Hey Kev can I ask why you want to change all this stuff. What's wrong with the original?

Guys, Hi-Torque starter motors are definitely the way to go. Try www.castleauto.com.au in Castlemaine, Victoria OR the enginecentre.com.au based in Narre Warren South. They go for around the $400 mark and are one of the best investments in reliability that you can get for your V6 Capri! And they are at least half the weight of the old origianl lumpy Capri ones!!!!

Steve the alternator is just making 12v & not charging the battery correctly & the starter motor does not retract quick enough & just catched the ring gear of which sounds terrible so I want to sort these things out so we can get it out & about. I sourced a new alternator from Ashdowns/Ingrams on Friday $195.00(OEX)Lucas look alike, fitted today & now we have the charging system working the way it should. Next on the list for next week will be sorting a new Hi-torque starter motor from either Castleauto or the Engine centre thanks for the info ford3000gt.

I was just wondering why you chose to fit something different rather than repair the originals. Are the replacements better/cheaper?

Steve the alternator was rebuilt sometime ago by Deerings & when I have asked auto sparkies about rebuilding the Lucas unit they tell dont bother as they were generally too expensive to fix, a couple had a saying about Lucas alternators 'Prince of Darkness" so with that I figured if I could get a new replacement that was going to sort the issue out then was was the way to go plus 3 year warranty on new unit & it looks exactly the same just does not have Lucas on the black plastic rear cover. The original starter is huge & is pretty tired so I was thinking a smaller more powerfull reduction starter would be a better solution than rebuilding the original & I am not sure but most likely simular $$$ to fix the old unit. I think if my wifes Capri was going to be concourse type of car then it would be worth the effort to retain all the originality but it is not, if the new replacement parts make it more reliable then it's a good move but only time will tell if thats is the case.
