Have a play with this:
http://www.rimsntires.com/rt_specs.jsp?item=Wheel-Tire%20size%20comparer&showRim1=1&showTire1=1&sw1=195&ar1=60&bd1=13&rd1=13&rw1=7.0&et1=5&showRim2=1&showTire2=1&sw2=225&ar2=50&bd2=15&rd2=15&rw2=8.0&et2=0&text1=13x7%20Hotwires&text2=13x8%20Compomotive%20MO
Cause you will find some lower profiles in the 17's will be about the same rolling diameter as a 'normal' 205 50 15
Advantage of the lower profile is less side wall flex. Tho most of the small bumps on the road are absorbed by your sidewalls so you would have a harsher ride.
Personally I think that the bigger size rims on older cars looks a bit... eh and i would stick to a 15 or at most a 16.
Oh and I suppose I had better give you the whole check if its legal thing. ie in Vic an escort can on legaly have 15's.
Cheers
