Speedometer is not working

Hi all, new to the forum for a second time. I just bought a '79 RS2000 and the speedo is not working. Just wondering what I need to check to fix this problem?

cheers
Tom

    Hi Tom,

Its probably a broken cable. Jack the rear wheels up, unplug the cable from the back of the cluster and see if it turns when rear wheels are turning...failing that a stripped speedo drive or a dud speedo.

    Cheers,

    Phil.

    Welcome Tom,
If the clip at the gearbox end has not fallen off, the speedo cable will push into the speedo behind the dash face.

The previous owner knew about it and said it just needs pushing back into the gearbox. I have already checked and it is correctly inserted into the gearbox... I think he was fobbing me off with this! I'll have to take the dash out and have a look.

For some odd reason he has heat wrapped the speedo cable and clutch cable instead of the extractors?! [x2x], probably too much work.

Heat wrap can also trap moisture, So him not wrapping the pipes has probably done you a favour.

    Here's some pics.
2L with extractors and that's about it, bit of rust under the foot wells.

Not sure what the inside of the speedo cable is supposed to look like but here's a shot of mine at the gearbox end.

    Is it borked?

    P.S. I have a new pet hate. It's call a circlip [:(!]

Yeah its 'Borked'. I should have a inner cable that has a square end that fits in the box. That cable wasn't put in properly. Also, a pair of circlip pliers is money well spent.

Can you push the inner cable from the gauge end so that the cable comes out the end thats in the photo,it should only come out level with the face on the end-(in the photo).if not then maybe it has been broken some time and some monkey has pulled it out and left what ever is left of it at the gauge end in it,that is if it has any inner cable in it at all.

    regards Troy

Alright, thanks guys. I'll give Rolly @ Racetune a call and see if he has any.

Kizza - I was using circlip pliers , still couldn't get the bugger back on.
