The best way to go?
Yes another question about brakes and 5stud conversion. Is the hoppers stoppers kit the best way to do an upgrade/conversion?
I have read through every thread in this section and this is what I have taken from all the responses. Pros: Kit is bolt on, ADR approved, Get all parts required. Cons: Heavy as hell, only 2pot calipers. (Is there much advantage in 4pots over 2, other than sounding cool over the net?)
Is there a 'better' way? I mean for around $1,500 could you convert to 5stud pattern and have better, lighter, brakes than the HS kit.
I am a sucker for brand names and have been looking at Wilwood brakes. If I got some hubs machined up (550hp Mk2 Cortina wrote in a post that he could do a pair for $600) and purchased 2 calipers, let's say $200 each as i have looked through the wilwood site and there seem to be nice low weight 4pots for around $200, buy 2 rotors, $125each (thats a guess). Have 2 caliper mounting brackets made up $?. Buy the bearing to fit the new hubs to capri struts, $100 (thats what it cost to redo all the bearings for my RWC) plus brake lines.
Ok so i get a total of $1350 + brackets and lines.
So i guess what im asking in a nut shell is what way is best? Cheers.
::EDIT:: Car will be used for track days and cruzin' on weekends.

Not 5 stud but do you need to carry 2 spares and/or 2 sets of wheels?
BTW if I blind folded you and put the Willwood and HiSpec caliper in your hands you probably would not tell the difference.
I'll have a 285mm kit here in November.

Have to go 5stud as my diff is a cut down BW and I have already purchased 5stud rims. My rims are 15" so 290mm rotors are about the limit yeh?
eBay big brake kit hubs can be purchased separately for $350 including bearings. Have emailed to confirm dimensions. As i dont want to have the same hassles as "2lt_Scort"
If I was to purchase some calipers and some rotors with the right offset the only thing left to do is make some mounting brackets for the caliper, right? Or is there something I'm missing?

Doing the sums and the thinking about this further, I have decided that I will go with the hoppers stoppers kit, Its not the best brake upgrade but its a step in the right direction. Even better ones will be for the next build. ie Brembos =)

Why not just wait a little longer and get the Brembos (if that's what you really want) straight off the bat? That way you don't have to buy two brake upgrades.

I don't know what i really want. I'm still new at the modifying game. I always feel like im getting 2nd rate parts. And that I could be making it better. But I wrote down all the parts that I want and the cost for everything and I don't have enough money. Im a uni student that is living off centerlink + borrowing money from my parents. So I have to finish the escort project with the money I saved up last year.
The hoppers stoppers kit seems like a simple way to convert to 5stud and upgrade the brakes. Then later on down the track after I finish uni and get a job and a place of my own I will be able to go back over the car and upgrade things that I compromised on now.

what's the car going to be used for? if your not chasing every last bees richard of a second around a track i'm sure the hoppers stoppers kit will be more then enough mate. I wouldn't bother spend the extra on brembo's just to say I have brembos! but if I was racing competitively then yes i'd go the brembos.

I don't know how much it will have or I plan for it to have. It will have a big valve na pinto in it on twin40's to start with. It might see a turbo when i finish uni. But we will see where life takes me. Fuel might get that expensive we all might get electric engines =P
Talking about changing hubs; I mailed UPC about hubs and he says Mk1 cortina hubs are the same as Mk1 capri. Is this correct? And he says that escort hubs cant be machined out to fit a capri stub which was the impression I had after reading page 3 of "eBay brakes VS Hopper Stoppers" http://classic-ford.org/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=12987&whichpage=3
Thanks for the help guys. Ive wasted enough money buying stuff that i thought would work and I dont have much left, hence the million questions.
Cheers.

Food for thought... Would it not be easier to change your rear stud pattern back to 4 stud? This way your front upgrade becomes alot easier not having to change pattern of the hubs only the calipers you use The std hubs can easily be modified.
I think you said you already have wheels though?? Is it worth selling them and getting 4 stud wheels?
