Specialist - Flywheel/Starter Motor
Hey guys,
So I'm bolting a t5 up to a zetec, i was wondering if anyone knew of a specialist in Melbourne that could help me with getting the starter motor engaging.
I have, std mondeo flywheel, cosworth bellhousing and the mondeo starter motor, which bolts up perfectly, just doesn't engage the ring gear.
I'm in inner north Melbourne, Thanks in Advance.

Pretty sure you need the STD Escort starter motor and space it back 13mm.

Measure the distance between the flange of the starter, where it meets the bell housing and the centre of the bendix drive gear, when fully actavated. Now measure the distance between the bell housing starter mount face and the centre of the flywheel ring gear. The second measurement tells you where the bendix gear needs to be on starter activation, the first tells you where it is. I used a std escort starter and machined the flywheel ring gear mount stop back 13mm towards the crank.Or as Mickas says you can space the starter back, the down side is the starter has little clearence as it is, with out spacing it. This would also depend on your exhaust down pipe.

Is there any difference between a 1300 and 2ltr starter, i mean throw and cog size. Cause I'm pretty certain we tried a 1300 starter on a 4sp escort housing and it still wouldn't engage.

non of the escort starters will mesh with the zetec ring gear, check the measurements as above, you will most likely need to space the starter or machine the ringear distance by approx 13mm.

measure from the back of the block to the flywheel, and compare it to the measurement of the bolt up face of the starter to the front of the bendix gear. there should only be a couple of mm difference. get some pics up if your not sure.

When you say won't mesh, do you mean pitch etc. of the teeth on the two gear are different, or just location due to bolt mounts?
With these measurements are you asking me to find difference between starter gear throw distance and distance from block face to rind gear? Or distance between centerlines of the crank and starter, cause from memory, the later was my issue.
Ill have to wait till the weekend to get measurements, engines up at our hobby farm.
thanks for the assistance so far lads.

so i take it now throw is not your issue but allignment? Get a 2lt escort starter. the starter from the zetec wont line up and mesh with the ring gear. it may bolt up but it wont work.
