Strange head light problem

Today I accidentally broke my outer right head light which I have replace, but when I was testing the lights I noticed on low beam on the left side wasn't as bright as normal with the left high-beam only glowing slightly. But when I turned on the high beams the left inner high-beam worked as it should but the left outer light had nothing.
I can't check it right now as it's getting dark and I can't put my car into a lighted area.
What would cause this? I'm thinking possibly a short of some sort.

thanks for the tip Mickas, it turned out it wasn't the earth circuit it was just the left hand low beam halogen globe.
