Mk1 rear suspension ID

Hi All,
I understand the rear susspension on earlier mk1's is not as good as the later ones. Why is this, I have never owned a early mk1 before but am going to look at one this week. How can I tell which type it is?

    The early type bolt to a frame under the boot the later type bolt up through the boot like mk2

    Yep and also the early Mk1 had the Shocks at approx 60 degrees vs later models at 10 degrees
