ok so how about some clean air

Most of you gents would have had a quick look at my engine bay thread by now , some nice pics in their of Blown66's work if you have not

i need YOUR HELP ( yes you reading this ) please...

Being on a tight budget i have two compressors linked ( combined power around 320L /min - combined volume 60-80L have to have a look again - the setup runs all my air tools easily , da sander etc )

into my main airline which runs vertical to the sloped roof,

I then have about 25 mtrs of hose running in a downward slope to a vertical drop-

-Then a t piece which has a moisture release at the bottom (just a tap which i can let blow out )and above this tap a horizontal short connection to one of those general purpose type moisture filters

Then runs a short ( around 5m ) of hose to my gun which also has a moisture trap attached( the filters rarely contain alot of moisture as i do not let it build up )

Since using gravity guns and their large air requirement i seem to not be able to entirely eliminate moisture ,

Obviously i cannot go further until this issue is solved

Compressors drained , hoses drained extremely regularly

OPTIONS???

Dessicated snake before gun @$100 pop ?

Replacement filters ?

Have seen those toilet roll filters ?

link and old compressor tank for added volume ?

Hire a massive compressor for the base/ top coats?

Go back to Suction feed ?

What filters have worked for you?

What have you guys done ?

As i said i need a cost effective cure

I have spent so much time prepping this car it would be a sin to blow it now with some air in the basecoat, i pride myself on completing the car by myself and this is frustrating[:(!]

Cheers Jonny

Jonny the settup we have in the garage is very very basic & it goes like this 16cfm 3 cylinder compressor with small regulator & trap, 3mtrs of hose from compressor trap to much bigger charcoal trap mounted about 6 inches from the ground & then connected to 10mtr hose to sunction pot spray gun & the 10mtr hose that just lays on the floor as I said basic.
We have prepped & painted 2 cars in this garage now with clear over base 2 pack paint the same way & not had too many problems except a couple of runs in the clear & part of the Capri engine bay frying up but nothing that cant be fixed.
The other car we built & painted in this garage can be seen in the current edition Street Machine mag it is the 1957 Ford Fairlane (Blood orange & Champagne).

Jonny we also used 2 gas patio heaters to warm up the garage & left them running over night to help cure the paint & stop any condensation from dripping off the inside of the roof.

Your setup sounds fine. I was told 10m of hose between compressor and filter should be enough. The idea is to have enough length to let the moisture condense before the filter. Are you getting lots of moisture or just a bit? Are you sure its not just coming from the ambient air and not from the lines? You could try 2 inline before the gun and see if they both fill up.

3mtrs of hose from compressor trap to much bigger charcoal trap[/i]

The Charcoal Trap sounds like it would work , ill get onto that

& then connected to 10mtr hose to sunction pot spray gun

I do think the suction pot makes the compressors work alot less harder

we built & painted in this garage can be seen in the current edition Street Machine mag it is the 1957 Ford Fairlane

A massive congratulations Kev, it's reading articles like those that keep the dream alive for us blokes who don't have a blank cheque book

Are you getting lots of moisture or just a bit?

Just a bit GT , its superfine but does pop up

Are you sure its not just coming from the ambient air and not from the lines?

Im located in SE queensland where we have alot of humidity but generally good temps around midday for painting
Im sure it's the line as when i hookup the air gun after clearing all i possibly can via outlet's and filters a fine mist can sometimes be seen in the air for a short moment

You could try 2 inline before the gun and see if they both fill up

Yes i'll try Kev's Charcoal filter and also another newer filter before the short gunline

I don't want to clog up the system and make it work even harder but their MUST be a happy medium to get that nice dry clean air

    > A big Thankyou for taking the time to reply , at least i have some solid ideas to work into the system

    cheers Jonny
