gauges are jumping about

I was out driving yesterday in my RS and my fuel gauge and temp gauge were jumping about a bit. The tank was full but would read about 3/4's then drop to say a 1/4 then up to 3/4 again and so forth and it did register full at one stage. The temp gauge was doing much the same, it would sit just above the blue, then drop below and so forth, but it did show the true temp at about 1/3rd to 1/2 at one stage. They both followed each other as in when the fuel gauge dropped, so did the temp and again they rose at the same time. I also had the odd quick flash of the low voltage light, but haven't checked the charging volts yet with the multimeter. Does this seem like an alternator issue or maybe something else? any pointers on what to check? It was no different when I had the lights on coming home.

Cheers

Tim

Sounds like the voltage stabiliser on the back of the instrument cluster is stuffed.
Take the cluster to an instrument specialist and they put a new electronic unit on it for just over $100 from memory. haven't had one done for a while.

What ever you do, dont test the gauges by putting 12 volts directly to them!

They are actually only 5 volt gauges that operate by the voltage being delivered in pulses.
