dummy side vents

Hi All,

can anyone confirm that the 72 Capri came out with the pressed metal dummy vents or the cast iron ones ? I always assumed it was the solid ones but was told this morning that the pressed ones would be correct for my car.

regards Paul

None are "correct" for Aust delivered cars. Some dealers brought their own sets over and retro fitted them. From what I have found the US and Euro delivered cars had cast vents early 69-70 and pressed alloy ones later on

I think what John was saying is that no particular style of fake vent could be considered as correct fitment for Australian cars.

There are about 4 different types that I know of, but there are possibly more.

    Cheers

im trying to remove the facelift fake vents from my pre-face lift MK1 (teal glow ). J.R , i think you can clarify that they are held on with auto silicon. I tried heating them with a hairdryer as you suggested to try and prise them off but have had no luck. Does anyone know if there is a solvent available that will disolve the silicon without damaging the paintwork - or should i persist with trying to heat them up ? I'm sure if i applied heaps of force i could remove them but i'm looking for a gentler way of doing it without doing any damage - they are stuck on seriously strong

Have you checked that they are not fastened. Mine have studs with nuts that screw on. You have to remove the interior lining to get to them.

I stuck them on with silastic so I did not have to drill holes, best bet is a long blade like one of the snap off type from a click out knife

Try the old fishing line trick. Leave the car in the sun, a bit of heat might make things easier.
To remove any silicone left on the paint try wax and grease remover. This should loosen up the silicone without damaging the paint.

great advise with the fishing line - it kind of worked, but it wasn't quite strong enough and kept snapping - although the answer was right in front of me - I ended up using a wire trace from my fishing box. ripped through it like a hot knife through butter.

    thanks Paul
