thermo fans

are they worth it?
im thinking about it, something like a DaviesCraig 12" Kit.
have it mounted down wind.

how well do the standard mountings [through radiator fins] hold up?
could i put a thermo switch in the thermostat housing?

    Hi James

    From what I've seen there are only a few fans with a shallow profile to fit between the water pump hub and radiator.

    I'm not a fan (poor pun [88]) of mounting to the core but if you are (and using nuts and bolts) then used large washers to help distribute the load. I think some fans have a plastic clip method?

    I'd Use Cable ties when mounting to the core as they can slide through with minimal damage and yes use a washer.

    Surely a man of your skills could fabricate a pair of brackets James? 'Tying' the fan to the radiator core is just begging for trouble in my opinion. There is a certain type of thermostat housing casting that has a threaded boss in the side of it that fits a thermoswitch perfect (could be kilkenny castings brand but don't quote me). Failing that you could put the thermo switch behind the grill and run the probe into the top radiator hose, thats how mine is.

    I used to have a single 12" thermo on my old RS with no engine fan and it was completely hopeless on a road car. If i got struck in traffic it would get hot and the thermo couldnt cool it without the car moving.

    I ended up taking it off and reverting to the standard water pump driven fan with the proper fan shroud and never had an issue again.

    I have 2 10" fans on the green car which works well but it never drives in traffic and that is where the problem will be.

    In your Ghia i wouldn't bother.

    yeah my thermostat housing has a threaded boss.
    im sure i could fabricate some brackets, but without having the fan infront of me, its hard to see what i need.

    Paul, the depth of a 12" Davies Crag fan is about 50mm. surely thats shallow enough?

    I'm with Gdub on this one.
    Have two 2lts running one of each setup. I cant keep thermo fan version cool in traffic on mid 30's plus in traffic with all new cooling system.

    The other with std engine fan with no new parts seems to have no problems so far.

    Std is by far less hassle. Supposed to zap some power but the amount would be negligable I'd guess.

    I have twin Spal 9" infront of my radiator and it never gets hot even in 35+ degrees, however, this is virtually irrelavant as im not using the standard radiator(I'm using a PWR unit). But they do fit in behind the grill with some careful tweeking.

    Hi James, I have a 12" Davies Craig down wind in a RS with no problems. I'm running a big cam, 38DGAV, ported and I drive it hard with no overheating problems with a standard reconditioned radiator. I've mounted it a little to the passenger side using some fabricated flat brackets off the OE cowl mounts and I use the electronic control kit which has the sensor that just goes into the fins below the top inlet. Obviously others either haven't fitted the fan correctly or done something wrong. I had installed the fan with it facing the wrong direction. This is very important. PM me if you need some advice.
