Tailshaft Loop

For those in the racing circles is there a general rule when fitting a tailshaft hoop to have it a certain measurement back from front uni joint?

Doesn't look like it would matter too much but I'm fitting it this arvo so thought I may aswell ask.

Thanks,
Rhys

I use a loop where the split tail shaft would bolt up.

    Thanks Peter,

I've fitted it up. Next piece of mind is a cage.

Schedule B-3 in the CAMS manual
"so constructed that any longitudinal propeller shaft shall be protected from striking the ground"

Doesn't give ya much to go on, but a tail shaft hoop of some sort is required.

Couple of pics of how I went about it.

    Started with this:

    Modified into this:

I've welded it all together so the only way to remove it is to undo tailshaft at the diff and slide it off.
I then re-inforced the mount through floor with a big plate on topside to spread the load if the worst was to happen.

    Hi Rhys,
Looks good and sound. Single piece shaft? What type are you using? I'm wanting to go single, I think I still have the mkI shaft you gave me.

    Shaul,
    Its a std Mk2 shaft.

    Grant,
Yeh I've changed the rear seal in gearbox a few times and its never really fixed the problem 100% though.
Just need to remember theres not a fire under the car when the smoke rises of the exhaust after not starting it for a long time.

Yokes good, shaft hasn't been balanced in a long time.

Probably a good time to get it checked.

Can you not just bolt a piece of thick chain or a metal bar from one side of the tunnel to the other?? This achieves the requirement of the CAMS Scedule J does it not? I cannot see why have all the extra weight of an actual loop other than it probably stops a broken shaft from shafting teh underside of the floorpan/tunnel.

Was just going to use flat bar ($1.50) at the point where the centre bearing on a 2 piece prop went.

Yeh I'd considered that but on my car there is no where to bolt some flat steel, would need to be shaped around t/shaft and exhaust.

I also like the idea of taiilshaft being restricted if it let's go to the loop and not the tunnel.
