RICE =P
I'm going to be buying 2x 15x8's for the rear of my arched 4door and 15x7's for the front. 4weeks wait on em as they have to be made =(. Ive started looking at really wide wheels for the back. (i dont need em i just want it to look hot =P) And I really want tyres with white writing, again just cause it looks awesome. And ive come up with: BFGoodrich radial T/A Cooper cobra G/T Mastercraft avenger G/T
All are 275 60 15's. Does anyone have any experience with these tyres? Thanks guys =)

Have a set of Mastercraft Avenger G/T radials on the RS2000 at the moment - somewhat smaller size though; 205/60R13[88] Fitted around six months ago when the 10 year old Road Huggers gave up the ghost Good grip dry, OK wet, no apprerciable tramlining with good directional stability, good turn in , no road noise I can hear over the webers and exhaust Got them mainly to maintain the period RWL look, but have been pleasantly surprised how well they have been performing. The Mastercraft Avenger G/Ts are bought into the country by the Brisbane based Cooper Tyres importers - these were my back up option when I was told they were not bringing Cooper Cobra GTs into the country...... Cheers James

jimmyd Ive always loved the look of your rs, i think its cause of the beans and the tyres. But yeah looks the goods =)
I phoned around and I cant get Avengers bought into the country unless I purchase a min of 10. And I dont want to purchase 3 sets of tyres for a car that doesnt have an engine =P. Im sure some tyre joint will have a few sitting in stock but phoning every place down the east coast isn't something i wanna be doing. I found some 275 cobras locally tho. I rather the writing on the Avengers but thats really petty of me lol.
grant, I would think a 28spline B/W 78 LSD will cope?

That diff will cope no worries. Steer clear of BFG Radials absolutly hopeless in the wet and not to flash in the dry and I also had a simular size on my first car (265/50/15). If your only after it for the white writing is it possible to have someone paint in on like how they do the whitewalls?

275's??? I reckon you are going to need more than just flares, unless they are MASSIVE flares!

As im 3.5hours away from my esky Ive had to get family to do measurements for me and from what they say with all the orignal metal ive cut out I will be able to fit 275's if i get them to sit right out into the flare. I will be able to check for myself on Thursday night. I think i will make up a jig tyre outa cardboard to physical see if i'll have problems.
Thanks for the heads up on the BFG's KIZZA =)

why 275's though? the mentality behind my first comment was a weak foot print of a tyre, and a 950kg car doesnt put down much pressure on normal tyres let alone 275's. are u planning to use this on the track or something?

No I'm planing to have a car that looks mean sounds awesome and can drive at the speed limit. Otherwise the police seem to take my money =P
Ive talked this over with many people and at the end of the day Im not building my escort to be a track weapon Im building it so i have something thats relatively unique looks awesome and I can have fun in, It might evolve into something to go fast in but thats not this build.
Wide tyres on the rear is apart of that look. Just like the chrome fuel tank the twin exhaust the flares the black bonnet the retrimed orange/black interior ectect.

all i'd suggest is you will need a bit of power to actually turn wheels that size, that is a lot of contact with the road.
Tyres that big will attract police, and from memory the legal limit is 7" wide rims. Good luck

From my understanding of the physics of Tyres and such from uni physics 1a. the width of the tyre isnt going to increase the grip. So if i had a 105 and a 305 tyre made of the same rubber i would just about be able to turn them with the same ammount of power/force/work. Inertia will affect this though as a 305 tyre will weigh more than a 105, a double edged sword though as the heaver tyre will have a greater momentum once it is moving.
FYI Static friction is = or > the friction coefficient x the force the gound is pushing back at the tyre. ~ F=uN Area doesnt come into this equation.
The advantage in going wide is as you go wider the tyre is able to be made out of softer rubber (increase u) and still maintain the tyres strength. Also a wider tyre will be able to cool itself better than a skinny one, so it stays in its optimum temp range.
Funny story, just after i got the esky on the road I was driving and i didn't know what my back left wheel was under inflated. So with a greater area of the tyre in contact with the road it heated up rather quickly and couldn't cool itself. So when i walked into repco I had smoke poring of the tyre =P Long story short i destroyed the tyre and had to get it replaced.
So i understand what im getting myself into I just wanted to know you guys thoughts on the different brands Im able to get.
Thanks for your concern tho =) Jordan
p.s Everything im doing to this car will atract the cops. I'll just have to be sneekysneeky =P

Mate I hate to tell you but will have a snowball affect.. I did the same thing to hot vw bug in the late 80's . I found out the hard way the more resistence you put on the black stuff the harder everything has to work to stop it...IE BRAKES... I had a very hard pedal with NO stopping power..Ps I wont handle very well ie around corners . and it doesnt look like a straight line car.. BUt end of the day its your car.. good luck you will need it lol[(#)]

thats it... the bigger the tyre under the rear the more the engine has got to work to get it up to speed and then wen ur trying to pull up the more the brakes have got to work to stop u... if ur trying to keep police away running a 275 on the back and 205/215 on the front there guna notice... im mini tubbing the rear of mine to fit 10inch wide wheels and im only going to be running 265's... bare in mind it will be making 450+rwhp and will have big brakes... i would probably opt for going a 255 something jus a lil bit smaller but still wide for an escort... my 2c

I may be a bit lost but can you explain how a 105 compared to a 305 still has the same grip? The foot print of the tyre will always effect the grip of the tyre. I just put bigger tyres on my other car ( Patrol ute) and the difference is defineutly noticeable just by going up 1 inch but we are talking BIG tyres >35/13.50/15. you could compensate with diff gears to en extent but you will most likely need 4.3's or something silly.
