Sterling, i loo0ked at socks and found out the effect performance, get some metal mesh protectors. They dont effect performance as much.

Socks lead to burn if the engine backfires, go with K&N filters or equivalent/similar..

Sterling - What are using the car for... If for the road or off road then socks are best - get the unifilter ones and use with ram tubes... If your engine is tuned properly you will not have any backfires and will not set the socks on fire with ram tubes... (I have sat in a buggy that was not tuned properly and it had a habit of settign its unifilter elements on fire right behind our heads, but after tuning and putting socks on - it never did it again...)
Mesh are only good for a racetrack and will stop rocks getting in.. They will still allow dust and dirt and will lead to early engine rebuilds..
K&Ns are supposedly better flowing for ultimate flow, however in a Mk2 you do not have enough room to run the taller ones to allow ram tubes inside them with enough clearance and the ram tubes will make the car much better and driveable than without.... So use socks on ram tubes and keep them clean and do not over oil...
If you are talking about GDUBS twin carbs and cam setup which was tuned well, he always used socks and never had an issue...

Even a cossie twin cam head can fit 3/1/4 tall K&Ns with ram tubes...Even a well tuned engine has stand off at particular RPM and could end with foam filters burning. I am not here to tell anyone what to do, but passing on past experiences as an avid escort and blue blood ford owner...Ball is in your court[;^)]

Sterling do not use unifilters - I will go out on a limb on this one! every twin webber fire I know of & just read peoples articles on here have been with uni filter socks. It is not just the back firing that is the issue, they dry out as well, you dont end up with oil drops or oil over yo9ur hands when working on your car Spend your money once & buy K & N filters, they flow better, are easily serviced. If you take care of them you will probably never have to replace them Nick - my car runs long ramtubes & K & N's
