Removing surface rust

Hi All! Hoping someone can give me some advice on the best way of preping an old Mk1 bonnet with surface rust before I paint it and fit it. Should I simply just sand it off or is there a better chemical way to prep it. There are small amounts in places I can't get to also. Also a good primer to use?

Cheers

If you can get a tray big enough, submerge it in white vinegar for 3 days...it will come out brand new

Get something small and rusty and put it in a cup of white vinegar....homebrand 2L for 99c. Leave it in for 3 days and see if your leg has fallen off[;^)] No leg pulling here...vinegar is acid[%]

It does work surprising well on many metals. Has a pH of around 3 - 3.5 - is therefore acidic but not overly concentrated. Tends to convert the oxides and leaves the parent material. Works really well on light rusted surfaces. Gundgy bits are best attached with a scotch pad or wire brush as well. As Phils says, you can clean practically anything - guess you could include car panels (thou haven't personally done it). Drop a few bolts in a cup of vinegar overnight - seriously you won't recognised them. Coke (the drink) has similar benefits.

Surface rust wasn't that bad after all, most of the rust came off with a light sanding.

Must admit I thought the rust was on the inside of the bonnet. That bonnet looks in good nic. Personally I would attack it with one of those 3M easi-strip pads to get all the remaining paint and black undercoat off ( just don't work a spot to long as you can easily generate heat and distort the panel. Used one pad for a whole Escort.) Then attach it with deoxidine - should come up a treat.

Use sanding or flap discs only as a last resort-might be quick now but it will inevitably create work down the track. If you have to use a flap wheel make sure the sanding face is as flat as possible to the work (ie avoid gouges).

Sorry if u already know this and am telling you to suck eggs.

No! its great to get feedback, I always welcome it, I'll show you stages as its nearing completion. Just got so many things running in tandem, Decided that I'll fix up the engine bay also now, as well as the engine build and gearbox build.

my mk1 needs a complete paintstrip back to bare metal which i am planning to do soon. then sander surface rust. metal condition the panel then apply rust converter if needed. spray with etch primer block it lightly when dry. then start adding your bogs and fillers. next apply hifill block it then apply colour!

if you have any other questions feel free to ask as i am a panel beater.

    thanks
