Mk2 4 door Granny Spec (turbo pinto) Sleeper

Hey everyone,

I have been on this forum for a while but never put any of my projects up so i thought i would start now.

My first car was a gold 4 door escort but now it lives probabily squashed for scrap metal and ever since it went i felt a void. I saw this car and it was cheap so i bought it only seeing 2 pictures of the car i bought it for $500.

I picked it up and it quite good for the price.

The car is a Mk2 4 door 1979 2.0l manual GL. *BOG STOCK*. I drove it around for a month on a U.V.P (unregistered vechile permit). But then it got canaried so i let it sit for about half a year.

I then got it home because i wanted something different. I am sick of seeing all the 'hero' p plates in there 'look at me cars' so i want to do something about it.

I already have a good start with a bog stock car. My plan is to put a carby turbo intercooled setup on the car but leave it looking like my grandma let me take it for a drive. I will be putting the turbo kit on the stock motor just for now and leaving it on low boost untill i can afford to build a propore motor.

I have already done louvre, Sheap skin seat covers, dash matt and floor matts. I have mud flaps to go on and a few other bits and pieces. The car will stay stock in appearence, i hope to leave even the original radio.

I am on my p's and i just want to see the look of other 'p' platers faces when a little old gold escort takes off at the lights and burns there skyline or commodore fair and square.

I have already got the turbo setup, intercooler and thermo fan. Coming soon i will have the intercooler piping and carby turbo hat.

I will be using the stock 32/36 on the stock manifold instead of putting the zennith carby infront of the turbo as i want to intercool the setup.

This is the carby hat i will be using.

I did have plans to come to Small Ford Sunday with it complete but time has gotton away from me so i will just try and get it registered by then. I will have to complete some rust repairs and some other minor things then hopefully she will be registered and then i can get the turbo kit on and hope for the best. [:u]

Cheers everyone, any help appreciated.
Steve

Nice, granny spec lookin cars with turbos is so good, cause people just look at it and think they've got it in the bag. should try and hide the intercooler as much as you can or even paint it black.

But yer totaly agrre about something different for a P-plater car always good to stand out from the rest of the crowd, looks like it should be fun, nice work.

    Cheers

Been a while since i updated and i haven't really done much.

My motivation has been running low and i have been trying to save money so i can get some more bits to get it on the road. Also dont really have the best place to work on her.

Some how the box keeps on getting stuck in gear (even when the car is off) so i am trying to source a celica gearbox. I try to get the gear stick out of gear and i am physically bending the lever and it not getting out of gear [:(!]

I cut out the rust of the rear c pillars, both sides. Welded panels behind, just have to bog it, smooth it, paint it.

And i broke the passanger guard chrome strip. (If anyone has one let me no a price!)

    This is my "garage"

Should have some money coming in soon to get the body done and maybe a 'freshen up' in the paint department

Those old style wastegates look so damn cool. Is that an old Garrett-Normalair gate?

joeyjonsey - i will just be running a stock motor with a compression plate untill i get money to built a proper one. It will have a bigger carb i.e 38/38 or a holley 350.

juiceman- Couldnt tell you if it a Garrett-Normalair gate as i have no idea, hopefully it will work untill i can upgrade it.

Got a bit of motivation from seeing a nice silver 4 door, so i got of my backside and bolted up the turbo. Still need to get an exhaust made and oil lines but it looks right at home in the engine bay!

I have got the carby hat but i am waiting on some silicon joiners so that i can put it together.
Shouldnt be to long before i try to start it and see what happens.

It still lives outside , (it will have 13's and hubcaps on it when i take it out, the rims are just to see if they fit)

I have also got my r31 skyline 28 spline diff that i have to get chopped down to fit but atleast i have it.

Also picked up my supra 5 speed conversion, so it is slowly coming along.

I was thinking my turbo might be a bit big for a stock motor, would a t28 of an sr20 work more efficiently?

    Any advice would be appreciated!

    Cheers

Im using a .40 size exhaust housing, after researching a bit it seems like it should do the job alright.

Got any pics of your build?

    Just a quick update.

haven't done much to the car as i have been trying to get a slab layed do i can put up a 12x6m garage so i can work on my cars when ever i want.

This is what me and my brothers 'car yard'/garage looks like now.

Have bought a couple things in preperation for Small Ford Sunday becasue its not really that far away.

Got some widened 13's of ebay and the pictures just dont show how much dish they have, i cant wait to whack them on the esky.

Got a nice rocker cover but i dont no if i want to put a fitting in for the turbo kit so i might not use it for now.

And a battery relocation kit to have a bit more room in the engine bay.

Im hoping to have the car running with the turbo kit and 5 speed by the end of the year, then get some body work done. Hopefully to drive it to SFS.

    Cheers
