is there a diffeerence between 1.6 and 2lt struts?
i pulled the struts out the burnt out 2lt i have. i had the ventelated brake upgrade on them and was thinking of just putting them into my other escort.
is there a difference between the struts from 1.6 and 2lt Escorts. if so how can i tell. it might just be eiser if i can swap the brake discs and calipers over instead of the whole tower.

forgot to mention that the car i want to put them in has a worked 1.8 in it and the struts look the same as the 2lt ones. just want to know how i can tell the difference ( if any)

1.6 struts have a 49mm diameter strut tube,
2.0 struts have a 51mm diameter strut tube and also have larger spring platforms and thicker tubing.
i think thats right?

Im not sure that they are thicker in the tubing but as manetioned above they are different diamiters and different size spring platforms.
The capri struts do have thicker wall tubing but the same diamiter as the 2L struts, along with bigger bearings, bolt on steering arms and the sub axel is 25mm further up the strut tube.

If your talking mk 2 escort there is no difference on the Australian cars except for spring rate and shocker insert.

Not true .... What JamesR said is correct although not so sure about the thicker tubing comment. The legs are definitely different G

Simmoll - be VERY care what advice you give, as incorrect advice is a really big pain in the a$#% and can cost people serious money if you dont know your stuff...... No advice if better than crap advice if you do not know your stuff.... (if you want a set of "the same 1.6 / 2 Lt struts" - I will sell you some of my "1.6 / 2Lt struts" for 2Lt strut money...  ) Seriously - Definately different between Aussie 1.3/1.6 and 2Lt struts.... You can tell easily side by side, but as well as the tube differences, the top sping hat is more pitched for the 1.3/1.6Lt struts and flatter for the 2Lt struts.... They take different outside diameter springs too and the spring rates are quite different too... (2Lt heavier)

Know this is digging up an older thread but it is related and I am now quite confused.
Have been given a pair of Mk2 struts which were supposedly from a 1600 to fit to Mk1. As they came from a guy who knows his Escorts I was inclined to trust his advice but the measurements don't seem to match up.
I am trying to confirm an order for some strut inserts.
The strut I have has a strut OD of 50.59 - 50.87 (depending on where I take the measurement - which is petty close to 51mm). Does this mean they are likely to 2.0l struts? I haven't take the insert out yet but it would appear the ID is around 47mm (perhaps a tad more).
Have I got my ID and OD references @rse up? When you say 2.0l struts are 51mm, does this relate to OD or ID?
Is there any other way of telling?
FWIW the insert damper specs are as follows:
F4-P36-0110-H1: 40mm OD: 393,5 compressed length (20 C) compression bumper compressed; 430,5 compressed length (20 C) compression bumper contact 539,5 extended length rebound bumper contact; 546,5 extended length rebound bumper compressed.
IShould I also be providing any info regarding teh gland nut dimension? If so what might this be?
Any assistance on this would be appreciated. Ian

51mm OD is the 2Lt struts. If they have a bolt on steering arm they are capri struts.
