RE: Volvo B230FT, SR20DET, Ca18 or FJ20

In terms of power and potential diffrences of the CA18DET and SR20DET- WHich SR20 are we talking about here? Redtop or VCT Blacktop? If anyone can score a VCT Blacktop out of a S14 or S15 then your laughing as these things make power lower and more of it easier. My S14 Silvia\200sx had the standard Blascktop SR20DET in it. Standard T28 Turbo on 13psi with exhaust, intercooler, splitfire ignition, CAI. ANd thats about it, made 180+ RWKW. If anyone wants help, INFO, or any pics etc of SR20's or CA18's let me know. SR20's are a great engine to do few mods to and get great response and power from. A great engine. Ive had CA18's as well and i can tell yhou i love them also :) but diffrent kind of engine... They aren't as good on fuel economy, low end torque isnt quite like the SR20, Reliability however is outstanding, mine went forever and is still going to this day. Anyway, getting to long now. THANKS GUYS,

the redtop/blacktop debate is kind of void, since as soon as you put a set of stage one cams in they are basicly the same engine. however the late model blacktop (the one with VCT, yes, there are black tops without VCT, i have one for my escort) is a little bit taller than the early blacktop/redtop, so personally id choose this one to make fitting easier. and with tomei, HKS, and and most other companies making drop in cams for an SR20 its kind of silly to not put some in. however if you plan on using standard turbo go the late black top, (t28) over the t25 of the red top.

From memory the difference between red and black top S13 SR20 are the pistons. I have stripped both and that was the only obvious difference I found. Early model NA inlet cams have .5mm higher lift.

definately not the fj20 they are a pretty heavy engine.. i wouldn't go the volvo route either, if you're going to the trouble of a difficult engine conversion you should go for a twincam. Honda F20C or F22C Nissan CA18 or SR20 Toyota 4AGE or 3SGE Mazda BP/B6 or 13B Ford Zetec or Duratec Cossie YB or BDA YAMAHA R1 SUZUKI Hayabusa or if money is not an issue go with the H1V8 Made from two hayabusa engines. http://www.h1v8.com/page/page/1562068.htm

I've seen the Radical's at eastern creek with these v8's in there and OMG they sound like F1's when they go past.

it depends wat u want with the engine if u go sr...
if ur guna put cams in it u might as well save ur self some money from the start and jus buy a redtop engine... i wouldn't bother putting NA cams into it u will barely see a difference... if ur guna do a cam swap do it properly...
and i wouldn't bother spending money on a pinto if ur chasing power lol

If you are after something different... Saab 2.3 turbo - 94 - 97 models. Same bolt pattern as GM so commonwhore boxes will bolt up. Forged pistons as standard, will take big power. Cheap as chips too... One of the many items of my list of 'things to do'... Just need more time, and money... Shaun

From personal experience, forget about turboing the Pinto... WAY too much mucking around and as fun as it has been I'm starting to wish I'd done something simpler Of the other engines you've mentioned I'd go with the CA18DET... it's a very good motor, good parts support, revs well and they're cheap as chips because everyone rips them out to put in an SR... not to mention I don't like chain drive but that's more of a personal preference than a legitimate reason ...Having said that, I do like the idea of a Volvo powered escort ... parts would be much harder to get though, stick to the KISS rule, you'll thank yourself later Alastair

Yeah Steer clear of the uncommon models, SR and the CA are probably the best. Its all about parts availabilty and options available for those engines. My FJ20 is dam expensive to work with as options are limited. I would personally go for the SR as its great HP bang for buck.
