Mazda 2.3 Turbo And MX5 Duratec Info

Hi, As iv'e been researching engines for my mk2 project im just wondering if anyone can help with info.
The 2.0l Duratec comes in both the newer ford focus and mazda 3 and 6?? Im still not too sure! Anyway ive found a wrecked mazda 6 mps 2007 model with the 2.3 DISI Turbo engine and manual 6 speed box behind it! (or beside it)
Does anyone know if this engine is even close in design to the duratec ppl are fitting to Escorts??
Just been pondering cheap power and this seems to possibly be it
Iv'e read these things are around 190kw at the wheels standard and 4wd??

    No info guys??
Found another pic of the engine in a mazda 6 mps, from this angle it looks very simmilar to a duratec . . . Although being a 2.3 it still may be too tall for the escort engine bay but it has been done!

The MPS Turbo uses the same block as the standard 2.3 Duratec. So, get yourself a wccrossmember with lowered rack, engine mounts & sump from Europseed and bolt in 190Kw of power at the fly. You would need an Auto Tunnel for the 6speed box and bellhouseing. Change over to a bias pedal box with hydraulic clutch and your laughing.

There is also a Duratec turbo 2.3 in the Mazda CX7 with a smaller turbo that would be plenty of power for the 950kg esky.

    Also MZR=Duratec=I4

This is what I believe aswell. As the wrecks become available then this conversion will be more economical. I will soon be in position to report on how much power you can get from a standard 2.3 and what an escort is like to drive with this engine. Then there will more escort lovers booking there ticket for the go zone. ACDC's song Get youself a ticket for the Go Zone is my theme song for the Youtube video I am doing for the completion of my project.

Yep i want a ticket to the go zone for sure Iv'e been told by so many people that a half cut with an srd0det would be much cheaper power. . .which it may be, But it doesnt seem right to me[B)] At least the I4 is basicallya ford engine

The amount of good reports iv'e seen so far on the I4 gets my hopes up for it, including the work done by sbd in the uk to date
Now that i know the engine comes in a turbo version thats just another thing off my list of research!. It may even work out cheaper than turboing a standard 2 litre I4??
Now what i want to find out is..
1> If the same exaust manifold can be used from the mazda?
2> If you can use the same throttle setup and possibly ECU?
I think i would want to start off with keeping the turbo I4 completely standard to start with so hopefully most of the standard engine gear can be used. . . Plenty of power to start with[:x)][:x)]
I guess a front mount intercooler would have to be used also as the one on top would surely foul the bonnet!
Bill do you know if there is any other benefits of the 2.3 over the 2.0 other than torque?

Sorry for the ramble but it helps me to write this down . . Although now i will probably go to bed and have nightmares about duratecs in the go zone[88][88]

1> If the same exhaust manifold can be used from the mazda?
It looks as if you could, just use the cast iron manifold bolted to the head and make up your on dump pipe. For a turbo you will have to use it but for na it would be restrictive.

2> If you can use the same throttle setup and possibly ECU?
Not likely becauae the ignition system & dash is combined with the ECU. You would have to graft the ford/mazda inginition to your esky column and graft in the ford mazda dash board. Then you will have to get a CAMBus adapter to turn off the other settings like doors are open warning light and the list goes on and on. But in saying that the clubman guys have to work through all this so it has been done.

Other benefits between the 2.3 and 2.0 not much, but lots of cosworth parts. cranks, rods, pistons, cams and heads.

Definitely get the Duratec engine with VCT its a must.

Have still been researching Found these pics of an mx5 on the turbosport forum, Thanks for that bob2? Anyway this 2 litre i4 with 6 speed(ithink) is already around the right way as the mx5 is RWD But look at the size of that box[:0] Looks like it may be a challenge to fit in an escort tunnel? I also noted that the engine is sitting far back in the bay which may or may not be an advantage?? ie mounting hole for shifter in mk2 to far forward or too far back?? Water rail may be utilised also ??

Other pics not working . . will upload later

It is sitting that far back for weight distribution.
This motor will still bolt up like my photos.
Measure the mx5 box and compare with sierra type 9
An auto tunnel escort is a must.

Yep will have to sort an auto tunnel somehow then Still wating to hear on the duratec forum what the measurements of the box are?? If he replies
Anyway found some pics of the engine out of an NC MX5 05-06
Gives you a good look of what's on the side of the engine etc.

I hope these pictures are good reference for anyone doing a duratec conversion.

If you went with this engine, that is one from an MX5 you would have to remove the water housing from the back of the motor showen in the last picture, because there is not enough clearance for the one showen. The water rail will fit over the standard exhaust manifold but its restrictive. This motor has VCT which is excellent. You don't need a custom timing chain cover thats a cost saving.

Dont think i would want to keep the standard headers[;^)] Some nice s/s ones would look nicely nicely. As for the water rail . . yep it is quite far back[:u] There are quite a few companys doing them retroford etc so that will be easy.
Cost saving is a priority for me but dont want anything dodge or un-reliable!
Im thinking when i eventually finish the project and install the engine it will need to be as stock looking as possible to pass engineer roadworthy etc. The engine should pass emissions quite easy i hope[:u]

Unfortunately the later the engine the more involved the ECU and emission equipment become which makes it difficult to transplant. Ontop of this the manufacturers also find more ways to restrict the ECU's ability to cope with engine mods etc.

If you're determined to go Mazda have you considered the previous generation MX5's - initially a 1600 and then the 1800. Both are relatively inexpensive to purchase with a box in the RWD configuration? Looking at these engines the manifolding and gearbox is a lot less cumbersome than the current range of engines.

Emission is not an issue with the escort. Just need the charcoal canister connected. Yes you will have to ditch the factory ecu but as I said before its more from the point of auxilary stuff alarming and not allowing the factory ecu to run than emissions. On the back of the block, left to the water outlet is the EGR, this can be removed and blanked off. The crankshaft balance unit can be removed and the oil gallery blanked off. I was running mine today and its quite refined without the balance unit.

Yes paul granted you can get a B6 motor cheaper at the moment. Another twelve months should see a duratec install come done to $6000 with aftermarket ecu. Then another should see it settle into the $4500 to $5000 mark. Do not know much about the B motors but can you get one with factory turbo and VCT.
