watto's mk2 rally pack
hi everyone, been slobering over these forums a while now, bout time I made a contribution back; bought this one owner mk2 esky off my grandmaa about six years ago for a pricley sum of $1000. had always been garaged and lovingly looked after. I used it as a daily for a year, then started doing khanakrosses in newcastle for a few after that, with very few mods; extractors standard 2ltr internals single 45 dellorto beefed up springs and shocks Download Attachment: eskyorig.jpg38.99 KB went into storage for a few years and moved back to tassie and around 1 year ago started doing hillclimbs and a few track days. during this time I lowered the suspension 1 inch, put nolothane bushes throughout, moved battery into the boot and prettied it up a bit. Download Attachment: escortmods.jpg40.73 KB After a supected blown head gasket, simply due to overheating (I believe) I recently pulled off the head and while I was there I sent it off to a head guy to give it a refresh, new cam, bigger valves and a port job. Nice, nice, nice!  What more could an Escort fan ask for? Any idea why your grandma went for a rally pack when she originally purchased all those years ago? Most single owner granny's are standard 4 doors, occasionally a Ghia. [(#)] Good luck with the car.

came 8th out of around 35 entries in the hillclimb. the esky suited the tight narrow short roads.
its was a bit underpowered for circuit work, considering the engine has never been rebuilt, but hella fun.

Update;
finally got the head back, and dead keen to get it up and running again;
has; mild cam to suit std bottom end 10.1 comp 44mm inlet + 38 exh valves ported
when putting the new inlet manifold on, the dipstick fowls the manifold.
anyone know how the dipstick fits in? does it screw in?, so I can bend it to the right position

Some slight bending want hurt it. Bending is needed to clear dcoe manifold or one that is none standard. Just don't try to put the dipstick in when in the dark or in a hurry, once bent it takes a little finessing to get it in.

I just turned the dipstick tube in the hole of the block and it clears the manifold,If you bend it it makes it ard to refit the stick back in the tube,as bill mentioned

Re the dipstick, just turn it so that the top is closer to the fire wall. If it is 'stuck' in the block and wont turn (it will be close to the only one ever!) put a phillips head screw driver that is similar size down the dipstick tube and then use some vice grips to turn it. The screw driver stops the vice grips crushing the tube.

thanks guys re- dipstick.
I could not turn the dipstick in the hole, without crushing the tube. I found that by placing a piece of wood between the dipstick and the engine block I could easily tap the dipstick to the location I needed - towards the firewall.
I have bolted the exhaust back on, and sorted out where all of the water and vaccum tubes need to go on the new twin carb manifold. next is to and bolt on the carbs to the manifold and sort out throttle cable setup.
when fitting the timing belt back on, I could not get the camshaft + dizzy marks to line up with the crankshaft TDC mark - it seems to be 1 belt tooth out. does this mean that I need a adj cam pulley? I am going to get my mechanic to sort out the final setup and run in, so will leave this for the moment.
Regards fuel delivery;
I was planning to run a electronic pump in the boot in conjunction with the mechanical one with a appropriate fuel regulator. is this necessary?, or can I just leave the mech pump in place and run it dry (i.e not connected).

The video of Baskerfield looks like fun. especially when the guy in front heads for the grass. Good luck with it.

Yay! after 8 months, and close to $5k, the esky is back on the road. Very happy with the result and a massive improvement at the top end over the single sidedraft and std head of before. Not much happens before 2.5k rpm, then you have to act mighty quick to change gears at 6k rpm. I'm gonna have to fit a shift light or some sort of rev limiter if i'm going to get any sort of life out of the std bottom end. -any recommendations? ps the dellorto's sound fantastic - will post a vid soon.
