Depends on what you want to achieve. The black top out flows the silver top in standard form. But the black top has very thin port walls, so with porting the silver top head can be made to out flow even a ported black top head.

I don't want the Blacktop water pump arrangement plus engineering the later motor requires the later ECU which has the more complex PATS (Passive Anti Theft System).

Why dont you like the black top water pump set up?

Just cause you use the later engine doesnt mean youuse the same engine management?

I have to keep the original ECU etc from the donor vehicle so a blacktop means the Focus gear which is not easily bypassed.

I don't want the serpentine belt arrangement as it's does not fit the "period" look of the engine in my opinion - I want the triangular pump, alternator and crank pulley arrangement. Just me i guess but.....

I don't recall the exact porting figures for my head because it was 3 or more years ago when it was done. But my fathers blacktop from his focus was done a little prior to mine and my engine builder hit the water jacket porting his head. He told me my head was better because he could remove more material without hitting the water jacket and achieve better flow results

Just an update with some pics. Almost finished the metal work, just have to machine the ferrals for the four link and watts linkage bars. Then onto paint and assembly.

I dropped off some parts at blu chrome a couple of weeks ago to get gold zinc plated again. It seems a shame to hide the fuel filler when it looks so good.
