Nigels mk1 cosworth project

Ok so ive had a few curious people email me, and ask me at SFS what my project is, where im at with it and why they have never seen photos! So i have finally decided to start a project thread...

An almost rust free mk1 1300xl shell was purchased about 2 years ago. It was bog stardard apart from a set of fiberglass flares that were terribly attached and blended. Car came with a pair of brand new bucket seats, capri sturts, round light grille, 6 clock dash and a full set of new nolathane bushes - perfect starting point for a project.

Initial plan was to fit a injected turbo pinto with t9 5speed and a hilux. This driveline was built and ready to go but a cossie came up for sale at the right price and the plans got much bigger... current specs are as follows

BODY

mk1 1300xl auto tunnel shell
fibreglass bubble archs
fiberglass bonnet, heater bowl
seam welded front towers and rails (to be done)
mk2 drop tank (side fill)

DRIVELINE

cosworth yb turbo rebuilt to standard specs
8:1 cossie forgies
standard stage 3 ecu, 3 bar map, greens (480cc) injectors
plenum spacer, mild ported head, bd10 cams inlet/exh
3 inch mild steel exh
gt30r turbo

cossie t5 gearbox
hilux diff 4.11 locked

SUSPENSION/BRAKES

world cup cross member
capri struts, height adj coilover
celica koni externally adjustable
noltec adj camber caster tops
rear watts link (non adj), leafs

hoppers stoppers 300mm ba falcon calipers/discs
soarer jza80 calipers/discs (rear)
bias adjustable pedal box, cable clutch
Simmons FR17s 8" front 9" rear

INTERIOR

fiberglass dashtop
autometer 6 dial dash
mk1 cream vinyl interior, rs2000 scheels

I will add pics over the next week or so, but heres some inspiration

cheers,
nigel mk1

Thanks for the kind comments, as for my workmanship, if it turns out half as good as Geoff's orange show car ill be quite happy [(#)]

Luke i wont say a completion date, as i know i wont accomplish it. Progress has stopped for a few weeks as a new garage is being built at my parents house to accomodate the mk1. Standard 3 door loom and ecu (stage 3 chip) for now, but i am waiting to see what the engineer says about a turbo, if he let's me a gt28/gt30 will go straight on

So the auto shell mk1 was purchased with fibreglass flares already attached, rear tubs were horrendous, and body lines didn't really line up all that well. But the project was just a relatively small build at the time, with pinto turbo and it was gona have to do.

Here it is as i picked it up, you may noticed the panelvan in the background, this was a parts car that i got for a slab. What parts did i get from it then? Fuel tank and single piece prop, the rest went to the wreckers...

First thing was to see what was under that primer

ah ha! bog. Well most of this was removed, holes welded up, and replaced with a little more bog! I promise just a little.[:I]

Mk2 pan van drop tank was chosen as it has a side filler, that can be plumbed to the standard mk1 filler neck.

These are the aluminium tank straps that i made to mount the drop tank. Folded out of 3mm/40 flat bar. Came up well but will most likely be redone.[V]

This is the original motor that was built for the car. Purchased as a recently rebuilt carby turbo motor with the intention of running sierra injection, rx7 550cc injectors, wolf 3d etc

full specs on that motor here:

This is the original 6 dial dash i had. The idea was to remove the guages and replace them with autometer items. Parts were ordered, but when it came time, i couldnt bring myself to cut up an original dash. So i used two spare 2 clock dash's, cut and bonded with MEK, to make the outer section, and 3mm acrylic for the backing face.

Autometer gauges as ordered direct from the US

3mm acrylic gauge mounting face face

All dimensions for the new dash were taken directly from the original, this was crucial to a good result

2 standard dashtops were also cut up and joined together to make a 6 dial dash, this was covered in a felt, and looked fairly good. However, when the fiberglass 6 dial dashtops arrived, i thought that one of those would look slightly more authentic, so i purchased one!
