We will have to get together for a photo shoot and a run. Its great to see the mk1 2 doors around. Even the 4 doors are getting hard to find. I have seen at least another 3 2 doors in Newcastle racing by.
There is another 2 door running a mondeo engine built for race days and registered a few streets from me. Mk 1's always stand out in the crowd of Doof Doofs.

that engine bay is f###ing jam packed![:u]
i love it ! thats what i want my van to eventually look like!
eventually![V]

is that a oil catch can on the front?
what's on the heater bowl(passenger side)?

g'day Brizey
Yep its the catch can on the front as i had no other place to put it. Had to make it myself. It no longer has the filter on it and is now plumbed back into the blow off valve return line directly into the turbo inlet. Keeps the EPA, cops and my Engineer happy. Has no noticible effect on performance.
The other item on the heater bowl is the charcoal canister for fuel vapours. Its the original S13 180SX Nissan one. Seemed to fit there perfectly with some large cable ties. Again it keeps the EPA, Engineer and cops happy.
Makes for a tight engine bay. Im currently working on a alloy airbox to also keep them happy on the noise emmission front. They reckon it effects noise and emmissions if you run pod filters. The new box will look awesome anyway as i will make it a cold air induction ram type.

Mock up of new airbox to be made in alloy minus the top cover and cold air induction

Will have stainless hold down clips. Should get a nice dose of cold air from in front of the bonnet at speed.

Nice, Very Nice.

I am not a fan of mk1's without bumpers. You going to leave as is or put bumpettes or full bar on front?

2006/07/12 14:42:40
longboy74
Yeah ive been tossing the idea around for a while now. I have two pairs of bumperettes, 1 pair chrome, 1 pair black and all the connecting parts. They both need a little repair work but it shouldnt be a problem. But to get them rechromed up in newcastle costs a bloody fortune. I checked about a year ago and they quoted 300 + for repair and rechrome.

match a back bumper and paint all the bumpers in a quality high gloss silver, with lots of clear. that way they,ll tie in with the stripes.

Funny you say that Scott. Im just in the process of doing that exact same thing. Ive also finished the alloy airbox and will have to post some pics. Hopefully finish the front bumperettes tommorrow. Will get them chromed at a later date.

the only other thing i,d do would be to either powder coat or paint that intercooler, so that you have no idea what it is underneath. then whack some 1300 badges on it.

Thanks for the comments and praise guys

I thought id add some new shots of the bumperettes and the alloy air box. I can't believe how much noise is reduced using it. You absolutly can't hear any turbo noise other than a whistle when i give it some at around 4000rpm. Very stealthy. Unfortunatly, painting the intercooler is a bit of a job now. I should have thought of that during the build.

g'day JamesR
I used a Holley blue for the surge tank priming pump as i knew it would be able to outflow the delivery of the Bosch 044 main pump to the injectors. Holley reds could end up starving the main pump if it was driven hard for long periods of time, eg racing.

Its actually Marks old pump. Works great.

geday just thought i'd say how much i love this conversion looks like a real sleeper untill you pop the bonnet of course.

I had a question for you, with your intercooler i have noticed there are no extra vents put in the front for cooling. How does this work, as in does this keep everything cool...? becuase here in sa i have had a couple of intercooler/radiator people saying i will need to add in extra vents to do the job with a intercooler that looks the same size as yours. Of course i dont really want to because i would rather it look a bit more sleeperish rather than having a big bling bling intercooler hanging out the front. I wont be running the sr20det i will be running a cossie turbo, but that shouldn't really matter probably, they probably produce the same amount of heat.

Cheers Luke

Luke i am running a PWR 500*300*76mm core and the plan is to just leave the front panel standard, see what inlet temps are like, and if it really needs to be done, find an inventive way of getting a bit more air to the cooler. Just see how you go first.

Josh i love the look of your fuel setup. I was under the impression that fuel cells were illegal for road use? Goodluck with the rest of the project, not that it looks like you need it

Thanks for the comments. Yeah, i was looking at putting 5 x 3 inch holes across the front but haven't got to it yet. It seems to be running quite well even on 38 deg days. You can feel it working when you pull up. The temperature is notably different to the touch. It wouldn't hurt giving it some more airflow though. I then just have to find another place the put the number plate.

g'day
Having a fuel cell is the same as the old steel side tank. Except the fuel cell has a little more give in an accident and reduces tank fuel slap due to the foam internals. One thing that is a negative is the fact that it needs to still be filled externally for use on the street. Im currently intalling the new pipework to connect the old fill point to the cell top. My engineer has demanded it. But generally fuel cells are ok.

g'day Nico
Stripes came off the internet from www.fordstripes.com Its a uk mob. Cost me around $230-250 about 2 years ago.

Interior is all sheet alloy covered in black vinyl. - Lightweight

I'll have to post some interior pics after i finish the alloy (ECU) glovebox.[}:)]

Ive also modified the fuel tank filler to external and added a leaf spring in as a tramp rod (slapper bar) as i noticed that it was bending the diff housing mounts in trying to lift up its nose under hard acceleration. Great fun

Cheers Josh

Just a few additional shots.
1 The front bumperettes changed to a full bar with overriders - (a bit more bling)
2 My turbo dump pipe after i really gave it some. That was with a world cup cross member in the engine bay which sits the engine in solid. Couldnt believe it. I thought i had done the brass button clutch when i heard the scrapping noise under the car as the exhaust dropped.[88]

Never knew ricers travelled with the windows up for the full effect of air conditioning. I thought doof doof was more important for everyone else to hear whilst the ac sucked the bag out of the engine that is trying to lumber the extra 500 kg in bodykit.
Fortunately i have no issue with abnormal temperature at stand still or when passing these so called ricers.
Im just happy that im doing it with the same engine plant in a lighter car. Its all about smart engineering[%] The smarter ricers usually appreciate being shown the light, hence the growing number of retrofits.................

hey long boy lookin sweet,
what advantages have you found the fuel cell to have over the standard drop tank? (thinking about getting one)

thanks mate

Shea
2007/10/03 01:32:25
longboy74
g'day Shea,
Drop tank Neg. -no foam to reduce fuel weight shift
-possible damage when lowering car closer to the earth
-fuel heating due to being closer to the exhaust
-Need to make a return line if going injected

Pos. +If its already there, use it
+good lower center of gravity
+gives space in the boot

Fuel cell Neg. -have to make it a remote fill due to the new laws
-takes up boot space
-tends to make the car smell of fuel(even with no leaks)

Pos. +Foam filled
+Reduced chance of cell rupture in accident
+smaller dimension for reduced weight
+extra return points for different fuel setups

Hope i haven't made the decision harder

Go the sr20. Lots of stuff around for them. Gives a lot of shock value when people see how youve crammed it into such a small area, and they go like a shower of s**t.
CA's were a great little engine, but like the fj series, are getting harder to find a good example.

yeah definently goin sr20 will be gettin mounts made up in the next week or 2.

there is still lots of bolt on power for CA s so there still a good motor to go with. i just want to be able to say i have a 2ltr in my car. and not say wat 2ltr motor it is

Its time for an upgrade in the braking area and diff (weakest link). Ive gone with one of the eBay upgrades from Ultra perforance Componants (Thanks Tony) in Croydon VIC. They have been very helpful especially when the hubs had to be sent back down to them and replaced with different ones to match the Capri struts (Bigger bearings)

The calipers are huge and definately require 15 inch rims as a minimum. Ive decided to also go to five stud hence the pre AU 15 x 6 pursuit rims. They are fitting perfectly under the guards aswell. Ill go for alloy wheels a bit later.

Next stage is shortening the new ED XR8 LSD Borg Warner 3.45 down and shoving it under the rear. This should hopefully prevent any more bent brackets on diff housings and axle twists.

I will end up with discs all round that should be more than capable of slowing her down, Hell of a lot stronger diff with LSD and a good ratio, bigger wheels with lower profile tyres, 5 studs for better selection of wheels, and the ability to finally be able to push her to its limits without destroying anything.

So much fun yet to be had................

Yes the slots are around the wrong way. Discs have been swapped as it was only a trial fit up.[(#)]

Car looks awesome mate, very nicely done. Any power figures?

Any problems with the brakes apart from the capri strut/hub thing, was thinking of getting a set of these for mine.
2007/06/21 10:28:29
longboy74
The only other issue was the supplied brake lines. They supply ADR legal braided lines and also the original rubber ones still fitted to the calipers, but they have a female fitting for the attachment to the engine bay sidewall instead of a male fitting. Would be just a case of changing the escort fitting around a little but thats all. All items are of very good quality.

As for power figures, these upgrades will finally allow me to really push it on the dyno very shortly. Thats when the dyno shop recovers from the flood damage here in Newcastle. I was glad that i was doing this upgrade as the car is up on stands and my shed was flooded. It reached the hub centre line even up on stands.[:0]
2007/06/21 10:42:16
RSWEPN
Sounds good, i'll grab a set for mine soon. My brother went to see the bloke about brakes for his falcon and said everything looked to be of good quality.

Where abouts in newcastle are you? my cars in newcastle atm but didn't get flooded. What sort of power figures are you looking for??
2007/06/21 10:48:24
longboy74
Im at New Lambton. As for power, more is better but im searching to eventually get to 250-300 rwkw. A little while off yet but i think it should get at least 200rwkw at the moment with only 10-12 psi boost. The standard turbo is running out of puff at the moment so it will be one of the first things to be upgraded next plus 550 cc injectors. The current upgrades should give me a good platform to cope with the intended power.
I dont think any more than that would be of benefit as the car only weighs about 750-800 kg

g'day Dredd,
This should help:

The radiator is a KJ Radiator Industries unit.PN(KJ044A) Dimensions are 30mm core, 350mm high, 690mm wide. Fits in with exactly 2mm spare each side between the chassis rails and radiator cap clears the bonnet by about 20-30mm. Does require radiator shroud panel mods aswell.
I bought it off eBay (nrap - eBay username) through Ringwood Auto Parts in Victoria. Cost me $340. Its an sr20 alloy radiator that the Datsun boys use when doing sr20 conversions except with the inlet/outlet reversed.

Well im nearly finished the 2007 upgrades. The BTR ED XR6 diff is in running 3.45:1. Should go well behind the 5 speed. Was getting over 60km/hr in first with a 3.54:1 and no LSD during brake testing. The brake disc conversion and 5 stud conversion is also complete. Just need to shorten the driveshaft, buy some slotted rear rotors and some Toyo T1R's 205/50/15 for the rear and im back on the road.
Currently running Falcon ED-EF 15 x 6.5 rims with zero offset which are fitting perfectly but they are only temporary.
I should finally be able to wind up the boost now and feel safe about it.
Last shot is of the before shot of the falcon diff compared to escort. It just wouldn't fit???[(#)][:x)][(#)][:x)]

Ha Ha Ha. No problem Scoop. We had 16 cars turn up. 3100 Capri, GT Capris, 2 and 4 door cortinas, Sierra RS, Thames panel van and so on, so the mix was wide and varied. Some of the guys have Lotus Escorts and cortina 500's in the sheds which would be awesome to see. Hopefully they bring them out on the next event.

If you ever need to have a look, give us a yell and come over.

New wheels ordered. 15 x 6 Charcoal black Superlites 5 studs.(4 studs in photo) Couldnt find any other wheels i liked that fitted the escort front offsets. Stupid front wheel drive and modern cars with pos 40 offsets and there 20 inch rims
Anyway, had a mate photoshop the exact wheel tyre combo to see what it would look like. I reckon its allright

I went for 6 inch because they wont contact any part of the body under all suspension movements and wont have to be cutting any panels. I also couldnt get a decent offset to fit 7's on the rears in a 15 inch rim to fit over the rear falcon disc brakes. 7's contact the bleed nipples on the calipers and even if i had shortened them, i was then going to have an issue with the hand brake cable actuator. Bugger
Plus i had only recently purchased new 15 inch Toyo T1R's because it is less expensive in the long run if im going to be trashing tyres. It all kinda made sense.
I'll be tucking the rears right under those guards shortly. Id love to go to steel bubbles and fit 8's and 10's but i dont think i could bring myself to cutting this body.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Agree, it needs some bumperettes. Have a few pairs, just need rechroming.

Paint was done by Superlook Paint and Panel in Port Macquarie about 8 years ago.

Ive ordered the leafs but they dont get here till next Monday. Should get around 30-50mm lower. I can then chuck some blocks under if i want to be cop bait.[:u]

Next performance mods are the watts link on the Borg Warner Phil. Then hopefully back onto the engine with a few tweaks and additions. Shes already a ball of fun But they can always go faster[88]

haven't dynoed her yet. Hope to soon though. Just finalised all the latest upgrades to brakes and driveline for engineering and it has all passed. So now its time to play a little.
Bit busy building a mates 1600 supercharged crossflow engine for his mk1 2dr Cortina airflow at the moment. Also found another mk1 2dr airflow cortina as a project car aswell. It will stay as a 1600 crossflow track car.

And yes that silver mk1 is a sweet looking car. I did plan to bubble arch mine but decided not to cut up a perfect shell. Looks hot though.

g'day Rhys,
What traction?[88] Its actually really smooth on boost and a very flat stable car so its controllable. Can be scary in the wet and you have to feather the throttle a fair bit. The Toyos are a good sticky tire. Have been known to get very very sideways.[:u]

Not at the moment mate. Would have had an absolute beauty the other week but the other guy didn't have a camera. Im sure the locals at the Paxton pub would have caught some footage. They wouldn't let me leave until i did something special. Did that in a big way. Had the car at full lock in both directions and i didn't have time to look back at the smoke. Had to back right off to straighten up, otherwise i was grazing with the cattle in the next paddock. [:u]

How do you find the 3.45 gears? i have same running gear as you except for 3.89 gears and i think it is still too high. I started with 2.92 gears and was pulling 170 in 3rd - 2 more gears to go!

Very tidy car.

No quarter as yet. Having clutch slippage issues with the brass button plate. Noticed when dragging off GT3 Cup Porshe.[88] Think he was still very impressed anyway. Shes OK with the 3.45. Giving 188kph in 4th (1:1 ratio) on the dyno with clutch slip and only 11 psi boost. Should see over 230kph. Have had it above 220. Still have the rev limiter in aswell. I reckon a 3.54 would be better. 180sx's had a 4:1 diff for its weight so mines about right.
Good to hear of other conversions around. They make a fun reliable car.

Time to upgrade again.
Menu:
GARRETT Turbo - GT2871R, 52 Trim 71, Comp wheel, .64 Exhaust.
Braided oil lines
Splitfire ignition coils and high discharge pack
550 Nismo injectors
Z32 AFM
Standard ECU with Nistune modification allowing real time tuning.

Should add some more spice.

Longboy, Great article in the March 2010 Classic Ford Mag. Photos and article are great. Actually a very interesting magazine in total with all the different classic ford engine transplants.

Keep up the great work!
