There was an RS van. It was a one-off factory number for a Mr Bob Holden. Yellow with side windows, and a red Mexico-style stripe down the side. As far as I know, it no longer exists (not sure on exact circumstances).

Heres mine, BTW.
You might recognise it from my Project: Blue thread. Light setup has changed cause I like to be able to see where I'm going

http://38.114.207.10/5642a545ea85caa98072d0bbf9e6c7d94g.jpg

I have documentation from FoMoCo stating that my particular Van was the last built in the last month/year of production. In the user's manual, it states that it wasn't sold until August 1982, and up till that point, it was a demonstrator... however that works. As far as I can make out, the rego was LWK 337, but could have been an N instead of the W. Even if it's proved not to be the last, it's still priceless to me, even after being offered interesting prices/objects for it.

WOW I actually just bought this van a couple of months ago! It came complete with odd colour patches, cheviot wheels and a screw on bonnet scoop [:p]

The last few days I have been pulling it apart in my garage for some body work and a respray. Hope to post pics when finished.

From posting on page 2 of this thread, dated 25/11/07.

"There was an RS van. It was a one-off factory number for a Mr Bob Holden. Yellow with side windows, and a red Mexico-style stripe down the side. As far as I know, it no longer exists (not sure on exact circumstances)."

Bob Holden was supplied a new Escort panel van from Ford Motor Company that had received slight front end panel damage during unloading from the transporter prior dealer delivery. From what I understand Bob was given the car, he repaired the damage and fitted the RS2000 nosecone himself as an extra. The car definitely did not have an RS2000 nosecone as from Ford.

The car was painted yellow and red and highly modified by Bob himself. I was priveleged to test drive it in 1984 and was very impressive.

Bob still owns this exact car and drives it regularly, which is now white, with standard panel van front (no nosecone) and 1600 Kent engine. I should have some piccies somewhere, will post up when I find them.

This photo was taken at the RSOC (Aust) Display and Concourse Day Parramatta Park November 2008.

Bob Holden's panel van is the white one, my van is the light blue van.

Hey adam, Is that your daily driver, looks great..
2010/04/10 00:36:41

i started my ford escort love affair with

1975 Mk1 panel van, 2L (with crummy flames across the front), lotsa bog but excellent panel work inside. Burst a fuel line coming home one day - had the fire brigade help me put it out...

1976 Mk2 panel van, 1.6L webber, lowered and re-spray... had to go when the first bub came along - but it was starting to rust away before my eyes...

looked at a 1980 sundowner (original) - and nearly bought it... they looked cool, but i couldnt pay the $6k at the time...

now (my third) is the 1979 Mk2 GL 4-door, 1.6... can fit a baby seat in the back - and i am finding the sedan has less rust-prone areas than the panel van (twin skin roof folds were always going, as well as around the panel van windows)...

but, seeing these photo's has brought a tear in the eye - got good memories of stuff (including mates) rolling around in the back when i have drifted the panel van round a corner...

well done guys - keep the panno's goin!

Never guessed that wouls be bob's car, looks nothing like one of his his racecars

Here's an upcoming project for me, a '79 2.0 Sundowner. There's a couple other projects in the queue first so don't expect much soon!

It is not running yet, but it wont take long to get running, just need a bit of experience, its a great little project, and will be a great day drivers car when its going all good, the seats have been completely re done and the back has been redone to fit speakers in it. (Speakers dont come with it) I am asking for $5,000 or nearest offer. Please contact me on 0427716758

hi cos086 would you still have this gorgeous sundowner?

could you help me with some questions

im doing a replica escort sundowner from a rust free windowless bc van and i just found some genuine side bubble windows, does anyone know the measurements of where the windows go on the side panels

does anyone own a sundowner with the side windows out atm? i need to know the dynamiter of the actual hole as i dont know what gap i need to add for the rubbers when fitted

and where are they located in the panels, need some measurements from the top plus bottom from the inner lip of the boarder lines plus from the back boarder line  inner lip

The RS2000 never really appealed to me, the shape of the front end just doesnt work for such a small car IMHO, not to offend owners, just not for me, however, on a van it just looks right. The picture post here by 'nofear609' works, I guess its the length of the panel after the door pillar, and the fact that it doesnt have rear windows, it sort of balances the extra length of the front end.

Here is mine.

Here is one i found on google, best looking MK1 methinks

It might have been my dads mark 1.  And yes he still has it (I am trying to get him to register it again, every time I change something on my car I get him to take it for a drive and he is reminded of how good an escort is)

Vans are cool. .I've got 5 of them! One is a 1954 prefect with a wooden rear load bay .
I like building them more than coups cause there's no back seat or Windows to worry about . ..
One of them is destined to turn into a Ute, cause the roof is nearly dispatched from rust, i may as well..!
It's next in line on the resto list .

This Sundowner was bought new by a close mate of mine in 1980.
It was the second Wedgewood Blue Sundowner he owned.
He killed both. i haven't yet forgiven him.....

Hi Peter,
That blue van is an unusual colour, only ever seen Sundowners in brighter colours with the usual side decals. Len

Hi Len,
I bought the van from Telecom in April 1986. It was originally Sno white.
Started to paint it in 1990 however because back then there were a million white escort vans around, at the last moment before painting I thru some blue tinter into the white paint. In 2000 I repainted it again to a slightly darker blue which is what it still is today.
It's fun to drive it not only because it is an older car, but because the bright "BabyBlue" colour contrasts so much in traffic with the drab silver and black metallic colours most people seem to choose for the modern cars today.

Gidday fellow vanners. I just bought my first panelvan. It’s a 79 1600. Originally wedgewood with tan seats. Just wondering if anyone can tell me. It’s got windows in the sides at the back. I’ve seen different placements of these rear windows. Sometimes there’s a pair on each side, sometimes one towards the back and sometimes one closer to the front. We’re these all added later or what? Also wondering where the spare wheel went. Did it just sit in the back? Hoping some of you experts might be able to help a noob out. Chook

spare wheel sits behind the passenger seat, under the floor but only will fit with a very skinny 13in tyre, or  if you lucky enough to find a sundowner bracket that sits the wheel passenger side at the rear, i can take pics if you like,
from my experience the ones with one windows on the sides were normally work vehicles but i may be wrong

Haha thanks guys!
Len , is that my collection?. .. No, there's more out the back, another rusty mk2 pinto van and a 1953ish Prefect van among the collection of coups. ..😆

The rear deck had a bed screwed to it possibly from it early life and yes the floor was spot on like new. .
Deano, i have a mk1 escort coup with bubbles. .been there done that , hehe !!

This is my mk1 van. .one day it'll be running, some don't like the XL stainless sill strips i fitted..it just looks that bit more classy and I've not seen it done to a van before. .

Hi Marty,
That's a neat addition- has it got some motorvation - just not up and running yet?

It has mate.. a 2.1 zetec with full ARP bolts and studs ,Ford Racing spec 3 cams ,
Probe pistons , the list goes on. I just bought a set of itb's from USA of' a gsxr750 (42mm) that done only 500 miles for $125au . The Celica gearbox belhousing from Dellow has striped starter motor threads which I'll either helicoil or Weld slugs and re tap... either way its annoying . Not a fan of Dellow and might just go back to a 4sp .

Didn't realise this thread has been going nearly 20yrs !!

My next in line project, rusty corner..
It's been sitting for about 10 yrs getting heavier from being a mobile shed but also getting lighter from rusting away.
It's due for surgery with a crop top , an engineer well be involved with this job as it'll be rebirthed into a ute as we've lightly discussed on my coup thread. As you can tell I'm not caring to much about rust because as Deano pointed out and my theory is you still need to weld a small patch or a big patch the only difference is size of the patch !
