1972 Mk 1 Escort daily driver project.

Hey guys and girls. Last week i found a 1972 Mk1 Escort, XL 1300 Auto for sale on ebay. that arvo i went and had a look at it, and by friday put a deposit on. I went today and picked her up and dropped it at my mates place, which is where she will live until i get her registered. My plans are to just get it registered, and start driving it. I will clean it up.
List of things i want to do:
4spd manual conversion
new door cards
new headlights
Cibie Oscar driving lights
 new carpet
Minilite wheels.

Any help i can get would be really good. I will be trying to chase parts for the manual conversion. I also need new tail lights, reverse lights as they are all cracked. I also need some dash switches, but i will find out exactly which ones i am missing when i go over the car this weekend.
just picked her up, about to head back across to the west of the city

at my mates place where it will stay until its got rego

the little 1300CC power plant :)

Yer ill definitely have my hands full.
My mate who's house its living at, and who is also helping me, his and my birthdays are both in June, so i told him i wanted to have it ready by June...unfortunately i don't think that is going to happen now :( but i am going to try my hardest to get it done by then.
I still haven't stuck my head under the car to look how good or bad the front suspension is in regards to bushes etc etc.

Good luck with it.

If you need anything jusat put it up in the wanted section.  Someone usually has what you are after.

well today i put the car up on stands so i could get ready to start re bushing the suspension. I decided while i was there i would try the one original 12" wheel i had, on the front, as it has only been on the back...while i had the front wheel off, my mate says to me "those brake callipers looks pretty big" and without thinking about it, tried to put the 12" wheel on the front, with no luck. The wheel did not fit over the callipers. so at some point (i think) someone has fitted bigger brakes to the front of the car. i had a look at the rotors, and although they are rusty, there is loads of meat left on them, and same with the Pads. they look new...anyway here is a couple pics of the callipers if someone could tell me what they are off that would be good :)

FINALLY! some progress. I finally got the ball joints to crack, thanks to the splitter i bought from Repco. Made a fkn big bang with they cracked, but at long last i got em. that was the drivers side, i haven't done the other side yet, but the passenger side doesn't look as bad, so hopefully i will get them out no worries. Then the new control arms go in, tie rod ends, sway bar D bushes, and the front end is finished...(apart from brakes which i can do later, i just want to get it off the stands ASAP)
now for bad news :(my mate has been living in his deceased grandmother's house since she passed last year, and when i spoke to him today, his uncle (dad's side of family...) has decided to get the house valued. This means very shortly, its very possible that the house is going to put on the market. Unfortunately my mate is going to have to move out obviously, and if the Escort isn't finished and registered, that will need to be moved to somewhere else as well :(i know there is no way i can bring it home while it is still being done up, because my olds will shoot me. they would understand (hopefully) if it was registered etc. So if it comes to it, I may end up having to sell the escort :( so until the decision is made on what is happening to the house, I will just keep working on the escort, and if it has to go, i will be shattered, but so be it

WELL, there has no news on the house as yet, but it turns out that my mates uncle had organised the real estate agent to come around to value the house without, talking to my mate. He basically called Gareth one morning, and said, can you please clean the house up, there is a agent coming to value the house. Basically was given 6 hours notice. Anyway, Gareth had been on the phone to his father and his uncle, and is fighting to keep it.
As for the car, I finally got the last ball joint to crack, after heating it up, hitting it, breaking a ball joint splitter, hitting the back of my hand with a hammer which bled quit badly. it was actually Gareth that got it for me.SO now the whole front suspension is out of the car, sway bar included. I have all the new parts ready to go back in (bar the tie rod ends). Tomoro I'm going to clean all the sway bar brackets and washes up on the wire brush. The sway bar is getting cleaned up and getting sprayed red.
once i have the front finished, the back will be pulled apart, and all the bushes replaced up back. plus a set of lowering blocks.
when i finish the suspension, the car will be taken down to Geelong to get the rusted floor replaced. basically once the floor is done, its a matter of rewiring it, putting the interior back in, doing up all the tail lights etc etc, the car will be just about done.
As for the engine, i need to replace the front and rear mains, do the timing gear up, plus a few other bits and pieces. I am pretty keen on keeping it with the original 1300 engine, but a lot of people have told me that i should put at lead a 1600 in, just for the extra oomph. i would also love to go manual, but a new engine and a manual conversion maybe out of my budget. I have a 32/36 carb ready to go on the engine, plus some extractors. is it worth going up to a bigger engine if I'm driving it as a daily? or should i keep it an original?
2012/04/08 22:06:42
ratta tat tat
A 1600 motor, clutch & manual box should not cost more than $250. If you need to change front and rear crank seals on your 1.3 I would just put a 1600 in there.
You'll need a shorter engine mount (passenger side I think) because the 1.6 block is a little wider, a MK1 pedal box (with pivot pins and spring clips if possible), clutch cable, modify the auto gearbox xmember (mount brought forward by 45mm), Mk2 1.6 single piece tail shaft.
The 1.6 will respond very well to your 32/36 & extractors even if it's a  low compression motor.

I sourced the new parts I needed through Mike at Yesterford. He's super helpful and has a wealth of knowledge regarding everything small ford. Ask to be sent a catalogue, it's awesome.

The other option is a pinto. Compare costs between the 1.6 and 2L conversions there might not be that much difference.
2012/04/09 08:15:44
Panko
just a couple questions....

1, why the single piece tail shaft?

2, the radiator, is it just larger? The one in the car looks nearly new, i know the coolant inside it brand new, plus a new thermostat and housing on the engine. Is there a way to tell the difference between radiators?

3, how do u go about putting the hole through the firewall for the clutch cable?

Ive already been sourcing a lot of stuff through Mike, he is very good. Im heading back there this week hopefully to get my tie rod ends, so might need to talk to him then.

one more question, which might be a silly one, as i know this doesn't apply with my falcon,
but is the bell housing the same for auto and manual gearboxes? I only ask this as my auto bell housing has a plastic cover that pulls off the side, right where the (it looks like) throwout arm would pop out through the bell housing. is this correct?
2012/04/09 10:00:35
ratta tat tat
Your MK1 should already have the tube for clutch cable (mine did). Have a look at the base of your booster bracket, there should be a short tube with a rubber bung in it.

MY BAD 1.6 radiator  does not  mount up the same.

The 1.6 manual gearbox is a different length and has a bigger mainshaft than the BW35 auto. So you need the 1.6 tailshaft. Auto and manual bellhousings are not the same.

ok thanks for all this info. i will check again when I'm around doing work on the car next, as to whether it has the clutch cable hole or not.

Thinking about it, i might already have the bigger/manual radiator, but will have to have another look. I wouldn't be surprised, as there are a few things I'm finding that are off either Mk2s, or are off something else.

Panko Thinking about it, i might already have the bigger/manual radiator

I doubt it. The MK1 radiators are the same regardless of auto/manual. The MK2 is where it changes with heater lines for the C3 auto, none for the manual.
It's all explained in the ford, gregory's, haynes manuals etc. Do you have any manuals to reference? Cheap as chips on ebay, very much a necessity.

yer i got a workshop manual, just not nearby. its with the car, which is a bit of a drive away :/

FINALLY!!!YES Finally i finished rebuilding the front suspension in the escort. it made me so happy to her back on all four wheels again :)

Test fitted one of the wheels from my brother's spare Peugeot 405 Mi16. perfect fit, just needs smaller tyres.

Rocking the old school, small RWD cars. Gareth's Datsun 120Y wagon in the garage. Sadly thats going back to Tasmania with his dad to be restored, because Gareth won't be able to take it with him when he moves out of the house :(

new front end. Im liking how much the sway bar stands out

enjoy the pics :)

looking good mate. is that a standard ratio rack? i put a quick rack in all my escorts. i prefer the feel. in my opinion its one of the best things you can do to a esky (for the price)
2012/05/09 23:31:37
Panko
I'm not sure on the rack. its a Mk2 complete front end i know that. although fitting it all up today, i noticed a sticker/badge on the rack, it was blue and red i think had RS (it was R something i know that much). the rack doesn't seem to be very old, cos the boots are like brand new, and it feels beautiful and smooth.

thanks mate. TBH its better that i thought it was when i bought it (in some ways) and worse than i thought in other ways lol.

i was looking more into getting bits for the manual conversion, and it definitely doesn't have the clutch cable hole in the firewall :( so when i take it to my mate to put the new floor in, i might see if he can also modify the fire wall for the clutch cable.
i also found in the boot, there are some nasty gaps happening in the spare wheel well on the left hand side where the original sealant (i guess thats what you could call it) has rotted away and needs to be re-seem-sealed. again, i might see if my mate doing the floor can going over the car and seem-seal it anywhere he can find needs doing.

Sorry Matt, i replied to the last comment and didn't see your question

for the rust repairs, i am mates with a guy by the name of Glenn, who owns GPC Restorations down in Geelong. So he has given me a quote on mates rates to repair it all, and squeeze me in for a couple of days above clients cars

its great knowing people in the right industry

That's looking very cool. I really like those 405 wheels too. Are they 14", and how wide? The offset looks perfect.
2012/05/10 10:58:26
Panko
hey mate,
the wheels are 15x6 or 6.5 and the offset is perfect for the car. if i wanted to run them though, i have to put smaller and skinnier tyres on. I made the mistake of turning the wheel full lock left to see if it would clear, and it didn't. when i went to turn it back it was grabbing the front of the tyre on the wheel arch. i had to jack the car back up just to turn the wheels straight again. the wheels currently have 195/60/R15 on them (tyres came off a written off toyota prius, hence the profile) i would need to go down to about a 45 profile tyre.
also, I'm not sure about wheel nuts, if ill get any that suit. the nuts that are on in those pics, and only just on by a couple of turns, as they did not suit the rims.
2012/05/10 15:36:09
teeg
If the nuts are only grabbing by a few turns, you will probably be able to get longer wheel studs so they grab properly and then get nuts to suit.
2012/05/10 16:53:59
ratta tat tat
A 'correct' set of wheel nuts ordered through autobarn will cost about $80    Studs cost even more.
Wanli make 195/45/15's and are perfect for escorts, 4mm off original rolling diameter.
2012/05/10 17:04:13
Panko
thanks guys for that.
come to think of it, cos the studs are pretty short, will i need to put longer studs in for any alloys i might fit?
2012/05/10 19:21:39
ratta tat tat
No, I made that mistake. You just need a set of mag nuts off ebay. They have a long shank that inserts into the rim.

Panko
cool thats what i was hoping. cheers dude.
2012/05/10 20:57:18

i just realised though, ill need both Mk1 and Mk2 nuts. i discovered that cos i have Mk2 front end, they have different sized wheel nuts to the rear :(

Crazy day, but some more success!
well today was the day Cal and I had decided to move the escort to its new home, Cal's house.

The day started with the car being booked in for a wheel alignment. Cal managed to get the indicators going, FINALLY! I take it to the place to get the wheel alignment done, but they were not able to do the alignment due to the rear wheels sitting too far in from the guards, and the guards sitting such a long way down over the rear tyres. SO i called 3 or 4 other places to ask if they could do it, but all of them said no, due to being booked up from there i decided to take the car back to Gareth's, where Cal and I measured the alignment ourselves. TO our (well mine anyway) disbelief, it was not too bad. approximately 14-15mm toe out. i was expecting a heck of a lot more than that. the only downer is the steering wheel being a quarter of a turn out

once we loaded all the parts into Cal's Fairlane, we hit the road for his place, which was approximately 20km away. I (apparently) had half a tank of fuel in the tank leaving Gareth's house. well that was evidently wrong as we discovered about 4-5 km from Cal's place when the car ran out of fuel on me in busy traffic this was the least of my issues, because i could simply get a jerry can and fill it up that way. my big problem was the fact i didn't have a key to get into the fuel cap
after going to Cal's workshop and grabbing some fuel, we returned with an XG dipstick, pliers, and 3 different screwdrivers, and so we set into breaking into the fuel cap. eventually the lock barrel fell out so we just access it with a screw driver...SUCCESS! put fuel in it, got the nearest BP and filled the tank all the way up, and off to Cal's place i went.

Its in a good place now, its under a carport, well protected from the worst of the weather. was so nice to take it for a decent drive, although slow was nice to drive. can't wait to get it all finished and registered now, just wish i had a better income so i could hurry up the process :/

well after not doing anything on the car for a while, and me feeling guilty for dumping the car on my mate then not being able to work on it, I finally got around to dropping the rear end out of it.

Last weekend I dropped the leaf springs, and everything that goes with them out of the car. Today i spent the day wire wheeling the springs etc, and respraying them all in acrylic gloss black.
next week im removing the diff, servicing it and I will do the same thing. cleaning it up, and painting it acrylic gloss black as well.

while i have all this apart and out, I will respraying the inner guards also black. just to make the car look a little neater once its all back on the road. photos will be posted soon.

wooooppppsss. see what happens when i get busy. i forget to update build threads haha

the car has come a long way since the last update ^^^^

Panko
SO this is where i left you, with the back end of the car in pieces being painted. this is it back together :)

This is how she looks now. got some tyres, painted the rims, the grille. removed the front and rear bars. Front bar is going to stay off, the rear is yet to be painted and refitted.

I also got my hands on a set of genuine Hella Replacement H4 headlights, back from the early 80s. they were the last set available from the specialist that were still brand new in their box. the glass just needs to cleaned, they are a little frosty from sitting in the cardboard box for years and years.

I had a free run of the garage a couple months ago, so i brought the car home for 10 days, and completely finished the mechanical side of the car. (so i thought........the plot thickens) i replaced all the brake lines, fixed the hand brake and got it working, serviced the gearbox, new fuel hose, fuel tank back in the car, and got it driving nicely.

but then this..... :(

that is transmission oil. yes it dropped basically all its trans oil. after i serviced the gearbox, and put a new main rear seal, and a sump gasket and filter, its decided to piss oil out the front. its dropping it from im guessing the front main. and this is where im up to.

the latest is, I have decided to rip both the motor and gearbox out, run a seal and gasket kit though the motor, and convert the car to 4 spd manual while the motor is out. I am still confident i will have the car ready for rego by xmas. (go ahead and laugh at me now) I still have a rusty floor pan to repair, and then the entire interior to rebuild, plus some electrical work. i.e., heater box, wiper motor, front indicators.

WISH ME LUCK!

Pursuities look great Panko :) What size tyres did you fit to them?

With your gearbox, have you thought about a T9? You have an auto tunnel so will be just as easy to fit as a 4 speed, and rev a lot lower on the highway with your 4.125 diff
2013/11/19 23:38:25
Panko
When is Small Ford Sunday? I know ive missed it the last couple years :(

I ended up with 195/50R15, but they are still ever slight too big for the front :( so i need to try get 2 tyres, down to 185/45/R15. Its going to be hard to get i think. They just catch on the leading edge of the wheel arch, at the front. So for example, if i turn left, the front right tyre will catch the body on the front side of it. And vise versa when i turn right. What i also thought about doing was carefully folding that edge it catches on, back on itself.

As for the gearbox, a T9 is a bit out of my price range. I could afford a good one, but at the moment probably wouldnt be able to cover the cost of the rest of the conversion haha.
The diff gear, when i had it out would appear to only be a 3.9 or 3.7 or something. Definitely wasnt a 4.11 like i thought it was
2013/11/20 13:35:15
ratta tat tat
My saab rims are fine up front with 195/45/15
Yeah T9's are way overpriced here. They're cheap as chups in NZ if you know any kiwis that could get you one :D
I think those axles only came with 2 ratios, auto and manual. You must have a manual diff (3.9) in an auto shell

Panko
Hmmm. Well, see in the last side on photo i posted (one with oil leaking) in front of the front wheel, you can kinda see the corner of the body where it curves in under the car, and follow the wheel arch line. That corner is where its grabbing. If i were to carefully fold that up on itself it was clear. It hit by only a few mm
2013/11/20 14:00:26
ratta tat tat
Panko It hit by only a few mm

Which is why dropping to 45 profile tyre will clear it. I got my tyres for $60 each albeit Wanli's. Better than modifying the guards imo

Ok ill try get some 45 profile tyres. Lucky you got em cheap. The reason i was told they can be pricey was because it was tyrepower that told me, that these days a lot of modern small cars these days run bigger than 15" rims, and even if they are running 15s, they are usually heavier than a 45 tyre would be rated to. Which i believe.

Ok, cool, ill try make it to SFS. If i dont get it to SFS, ill try get it to AFD. If i get it to AFD ill have 2 cars on display. My XF Ghia wagon and the esky

Bacca
I run 16" rims on the front of my MK1 with a similar problem of grabbing the front corner initially. Rather than folding it up I ended up trimming the whole corner back and blending it in so you can not pick it from original.
It solved the problem.

Hey mate,

yeah id spoken to a couple of panel shops, that do custom/oldschool stuff, and they suggested either folding it or cutting it. ill try the tyres first, before i do anything else.
