RS 2000 - SR20DET

  Hi,
I have been on the site for a while now but as my car is now finished enough to drive around I thought I'd post it up in this section. I'll start with a bit of history on the car. I owned 4 other escorts in the past but I held onto this one.
It is a 1979 RS 2000 that I bought in 1999, it then got a quick respray as it came with a white nose cone and the rest of the paint was pretty tired also. It had a mild pinto consisting of a unknow grind cam, extractors, 2.5' exhaust, filter and 5 speed gbox. I drove it around and had some fun till the end of 2000 when it was parked and stored in the shed. I had plans to restore the car and inject and turbocharge the pinto one day. The car got stripped and some body work happend in 2001 but  due to lack of time and funds my RS was left stored for a few years. It all got kick started again when in 2006 i got given an SR long motor in parts that the previous owner stripped down( broke the ring lands on one piston when it was in his 200sx) but he just ended up going with a second hand replacement motor. Well the rest was history..... The SR got fully reconditioned with forged pistons etc. and installed into the esky. I also aquired everything to complete the conversion and dummy fited it all and  started work on the body once again but wasn't long before time became an issue again and a lot of time passed without much happening. Having been busy with family, working a lot and being sidetracked with other toys in mid 2010 i decided to get a friend to finish body and paint it (otherwise it was never going to happen). The car was painted and back in my shed in dec. 2010, so having had all the conversion sorted  a few years back, it was just a matter of putting it all back together. All the work was done by me except for odd machine shop jobs and final paint. Project is ongoing and there is still plans and things to do, but for now it is very much in usable state and a lot of fun to drive.

Thanks guys,
Sundowner- The diff housing was shortened by engineering mob (didnt have time to make a jig etc)  and I did all of the diff internals and setting up. Regarding pic location I think you are onto it, it was patapinda road not far from river road intersection.
Interior is unfinished as I thought to leave it till last. Still got to do the ashtray/gauge area, dashpad and few other bits and pieces but I'll post up a few pics of how it is at the moment.

Cheers

Thank you guys, small update i have been getting the car ready for a dyno session to finish mapping of higher load areas and get as much power as the turbo allows. I was also getting way too much fuel smell in the car so I have changed the fuel hoses in the boot to petrol compatible lowest permeation hose available, and so far it has been great no more getting high on petrol for me .Since the last dyno session I upgraded the fuel pump to Bosch 044 which induced a couple small issues, The base fuel pressure went up 4psi and 044 was much noisier than my other pump. I could have easily tuned around the slight pressure increase, in fact close loop 02 had taken care of it anyway I still wanted to try and reduce the noise of the pump. So after a bit of testing I decided to add a 2 speed(lo/hi) fuel pump control, and now I can barely hear the pumps and the fuel pressure is back to normal base pressure  this should also heat the fuel less and probably make the pump last longer as it is running at much lower rpm.

Here is a pic of new hoses

Here is a dyno graph from the engine run in/initial tune session, running wastgate spring pressure boost of 6psi but overcomes to just under 10 psi in the top end.

Hi
Seeing the boot I remember i was supposed to get you some information
Below is a reslient mount used to support electrical enclosures on the Cummins gensets at work and as it's very plyable and would be the ideal size to use when mounting fuel pumps etc.
They have a 5/16 UNC blind thread each end and I recon they're <$15ea.

recon that 170rwkw would be just spot on in an escort, well done.. cant wait too see this in the flesh

Thanks Paul,
Sundowner, it goes well as it is but there is more coming. I am going back on the dyno on tuesday if all goes well, I say that because last night I had a little mishap and killed one of the drivers in the ecu, I should see replacement one tomorrow and hopefully it will all be ready by the end of the weekend.

Well as per usual next day delivery promise by online store hasn't happened and my replacement ecu driver didn't get to me on friday. Ater a bit of testing of the ecu board I worked out that there is a few spare drivers on the board normally used in E11 ecu so I was able to remove one of those and replace the one I zapped earlier, and now it is all good to go for tuesday. I've just been for a drive to make sure that there is no issues on tuesday, and it went well it loved the 20 deg. temps. Spanked this wrx while I was out, (Whats in it? 2lt turb.  Is that all!!!!) I'm very keen to get back on the dyno and finish the tune, I'll keep you posted...
cheers

Hi,
My dyno session yesterday was cut short due to wastgate being held open in the top end. Its a combination of standard (soft) 5psi wastegate actuator and pre turbo exhaust backpressure. I did manage do to some mapping up top but it will need to be finished later. I do have a brand new 12-14 psi adjustable actuator (Garrett 480009-6) to put on, just need to find time to do it. It made 196rwkw @12.5psi. As soon as boost is sorted I'll go back on dyno to finally finish.

Here is the latest dyno graph, boost control solenoid is at 100% duty cycle from 110km/h (disregard boost oscillating, as that is just incorrect closed loop boost control settings, there was no point wasting time as it will need re setting with new actuator)
Cheers

Hi all, haven't done a lot on the car lately as I have been too busy driving it. I did manage to sort out the boost issues by changing the actuator and fixing a small boost leak. It now builds boost so fast there is no lag at all and holds steady boost to  rev limiter. It made 204rwkw on 14.5 psi, I havent got a dyno printout on my computer at the moment but I was planing to go back on the dyno and try another couple of psi now that the weather is cooler, so I will post that one once done.
I also managed to fit the gauges in the ashtray area and finish a few other small bits and pieces all in time for Small Ford Show. It was great fun cruising up to Birdwood with a few other forum members and catching up with some others while at the show. The weather held up also which was a bonus.
Here is a pic of the new gauges

Maybe we'll try and get together and go for regular cruises, just need few more boys to finish their toys.

On another note I decided to get the car fully engineered now, being a street car I want it to be 100% legal on the road.
I just started the process of engineering, I applied for all the mods on the car and  have received what is known in SA as Statement of requirements(SoR) stating itemised things the car has to comply/be tested for.
From here my engineer has to do relavant tests compile the report and I have to present the car for inspection to Regency to check that the car complies with set out requirements etc etc.

When I take the car to Regency they will also be doing full roadworthy. So far the only issues with the car were minor stuff such as speedo to be working and within 10% accurate, washers, vented battery box and some of the bolts needed to be upgraded to specific tensile grade. Overall engineer is very happy with the car.

Matt,

The full brake test and the lane change tests which are done together have now been postponed 3 times due to wet weather.

I am glad as I wasn't 100% happy with the brake bias as with both f&r .625 master cyls I was getting too much rear bias causing rears to lock first. Sure enough I tested bias at 55/45%.So this week I ended up getting a .7 master for the rears which will hopefully be enough to fix the bias so the rears don't lock before fronts.

Looking at that report I'm thinking that is the evidence of the actual IM240 emissions test.

No not at all. Im 240 is a 240 second (hence the name) dyno drive cycle emissions test whereas MR853 is a static idle speed emissions test.
I have probably performed and signed off close to100 mr853's over the last few years. Mr853 only really picks up bad idle polutants such as badly tuned and cammed up engines.
If the engine is tuned right there won't be problems passing im240. I have tuned cars that didnt run any closed loop O2 and have easily passed im240. There is a lot of tuning cowboys out there and the mentality is as long as its all good at WOT she'll be right.

Matt,
The bias was checked on a brake tester that calculates brake distribution  front to rear and also the difference between left and right on each axle.
Regarding m/c sizes, I will report back on how it all turns out....
I dont think I will do brake test this week either as the weather is no good all week.

Ah, OK - thanks for clarifying.
Speaking to the same Engineer you've been in contact with has indicated I require the IM240 maybe because I'm running aftermarket ECU and intake - you're running stock intake?

Looking at the under bonnet pic on the last page, I'd say it's definitely a OEM S14/15 intake.

But I hope that's not a OEM Escort radiator. No where near good enough to keep the SR cool even in daily bumper to bumper traffic.

Hahaha, temp is reading correctly,it is running my pinto temp sender. Temps were confirmed through Haltech data showing actual temp, and yes Haltech is correctly calibrated for apropriate Bosch sensor used. I also checked it with an IR temp gun.

I managed to get a few things done in regards to preping the car for Regency.
I now have factory speedo working with Sr gearbox, although showing slightly higher (Adr requires it to be within 10%), it is in spec as far as complying with ADR is concerned. I have a few ways of getting it spot on but for now its all good.
I fitted sealed and externaly vented battery box, and also upgraded fuel system mounting bolts to a specific high tensile grade to keep engineer happy.
After fitting a 0.7 rear master cyl, brake bias is now spot on and ready for the Brake test.

To retain the surge tank, pumps, fuel hoses etc in the boot it all has to be contained within a sealed vapour proof compartment that is externally vented. So I am looking into that at the moment, I'll probably go with a simple ally box with a bolt on top or front to allow for inspection/maintenance, and an extra bulkhead fitting acting as a external vent. Although a bit of a pain having to organise this vapour proof box, its probably a good thing should there ever be a fuel leak. It will however make my "fancy"low permeation fuel hoses obsolete.

Cheers

Excellent!!
Whens the big day?
I'm thinking of building an integrated surge tank in the front end of the standard tank to avoid having the fuel system inside the car. That way I'll only have a single pressure pump and negate the lift pump.

Great stuff.  What does the MR807 lane change manoeuvre test entail?

Matt

Hi Matt,
It is a test used "to determine the road holding ability and handling characteristicsof a vehicle". Basically car gets driven from the initial lane to another parrallel lane and then back to original lane. The lanes are fixed length and position, only width of lanes varies slightly dependant on vehicle width. Looks simple enough but it gets a bit challenging due to test speed being 110km/h and extra 270kg added to vehicle for the second test.

Here is a snapshot from onboard camera.

RS 2000I now have factory speedo working with Sr gearbox, although showing slightly higher (Adr requires it to be within 10%), it is in spec as far as complying with ADR is concerned. I have a few ways of getting it spot on but for now its all good.

Interested to know how you managed to get it working. SR box has electric sender if I'm not mistaken. What parts did you use to get the Escort cable speedo working?

Yes stock SR speedo sensor is electric, but I used mechanical speedo drive and custom speedo cable to get it working.

Been a bit slack last couple of months, but managed to do a thing or two in preparation for Regency.
Finally sorted out the 'Fuel box' in the boot, ended up going with an ally box with a hinged lid for easy access and reused all my existing pumps, surge tank and filter but had to re-do the hoses as everything had to be compactly mounted. Also installed Moroso sealed battery box and moved brake bias adjuster.
All thats left is couple minor things, get the windscreen washers working and charcoal canister mounted and connected.
Here is a few pics of the new setup

Good news everyone, the long awaited Regency modified vehicle inspection was passed this morning and as of today the RS is fully street legal !!!! The inspection itself was straight forward and everything went as planned, it actually took just as long to queue up at registration office next door just to change the engine number. So glad it's finally legal and I can drive without any worries.

Haven't updated this thread for a while....so here it is
I upgraded the cooling fan to a Spal 16in fan which is larger diameter, lower profile and higher flowing fan compared to my old fan. The old fan was 1000 CFM and the new fan is 1600 CFM but also sucking air through almost the whole radiator core surface as it is bigger in diameter. Fan operating time has reduced a lot and temps never go any higher than the fan cut in temp set at 93deg C.
Pic of the new fan

Also installed a Mocal engine oil cooler, Mocal hi flow adapter plate with a built in thermostat. I drilled and tapped the adapter to take an oil temp sender. Plumbed up with some 5/8 Speedflow pushlock fittings and Hose.
Pic of the cooler setup

Back in feb I took the car up to the Small Ford Show 2013. It was good to cruise up to Birdwood with a few mates driving their small fords. The show itself was very good, the RS didnt win anything but I won a carton of Paleys in a raffle

Last Saturday I entered the RS into 'Nitro Outlaws' Competition/Street drag meeting at Adelaide International Raceway. As the RS hasnt seen any drag racing  action... cough cough on the track , I was very keen to see what it would run down the 1/4 mile as is.
I had some serious axle tramping issues getting  off the line, the tramping was so bad that on two launches it jumped out of gear. I managed to run 12 second passes with a best ET of 12.3s @ 113mph. With tramping issues sorted so I can launch the car properly,  it would get into 11s easily.  Very happy with the 1/4 mile times as is!
Overall it was an awesome day out with family and friends, good weather and  continuous drag racing from 9am to 10 pm.
I did mange to smash the front uni joint at the track, i guess well prepped track and violent tramping will do that, but I will try some Hardy Spicer joints this time.

Went to replace the busted uni joints on the tail shaft and worked out that the gearbox yoke is twisted!!!!
Now I have a decision to make, get another of the same yoke, or get another tailshaft made up with bigger uni joints and stronger yoke etc.

Turns out the yoke that failed is an aftermarket unit, made out of crap material and not as strong as oem Nissan yoke.
Sourced a Nissan yoke  and replaced uni joints with some Hardy spicer performance uni joints, probably could have done with a tailshaft balance but will do that later. Tailshaft is back in, ready for some more action....

Thanks mish,
This is the first breakage/failure in two and a half years! Had I sorted the rear suspension to eliminate axle tramp there probably wouldn't be a failure......I expected some axle tramp but **** .....that **** was violent. Car has been very reliable
And that's what I love about it the most.
More power hey, funny you should mention it because I am looking at some upgrades at the moment and its very hard choice mainly because I am trying to retain current low end and midrange while looking for a bit more top end power. I realise what I want may not be possible so I am prepared to compromise a bit.
Careful turbo choice and few other mods should get me there, but if I don't succeed I will go back to current turbo and do some 'tweaks'.

Tyres, well I love these R1Rs so much that when these are worn out I'll be getting some more. As others have mentioned already simply impressive.

I fitted up my new turbo last Friday, and went for a bit of a squirt over the weekend. Had some overboosting issues as I had a bit too much wastegate preload and was very very cold night, but car felt much quicker than before. As this is a street car it was very important to me that I retained the quick spool and midrange punch of the gt25, so in the search for more top end I only went slightly bigger to a gt28. Had a small window of opportunity yesterday so I took the car for a quick dyno session to tweak the tune to suit and after some fuel and timing adjustments ended up with 241kw on 17psi , this turbo spools the same and reaches full boost by 3000rpm(same as gt25), but from 3000 rpm its gains everywhere. This is exactly what I wanted as I am not a big fan of lag on the street. Very happy with this setup now, the best thing is if do end up wanting more there is still more headroom for running more boost .Been for a few little drives since and it puts a masive smile on my face
here is a dyno graph

Hey Mish,
My old turbo is gt2560r. Gt2560r = T28bb, stock turbo on
all s14/15 Sr20s, although some were bush bearing they were identical in
All other aspects.best I got out of it was 200rwkw.

No not running disco or 2871, the new turbo is a custom unit but would
be closest to GTX2863r in terms of flow/specs.

Hi. Firstly gota say the car looks great. Just wondering where your air intake is hiding? nose cone or wheel arch?

Cheers mate,
Yes the intake is lurking in the nose cone, protruding through the Lh side radiator support panel. I'll upload a pic tonight when I'm on my computer.

Cheers

Photo's would be good, The reason i ask is after 5 years i've filled the whole in my garage. I was able to find a MK2 2door with SR20DET.  The intake is under the front guard and wonder how much water on the road it would take before it becomes to much. Certainly not planning on going out in the rain but you never how the day will turn out.
Thanks again

Congrats on your purchase, you should start a thread and show us some pics of your esky. Having an air filter in the front guard could be an issue if you drive in the wet and/or on dirt roads as the tyre will flick up enough to cause issues, but if you only drive on dry bitumen it will be fine. if it does get wet tho water can turn dust into 'mud' and when dry will turn into clogged up/restrictive filter, so just make sure you clean your filter afterwards assuming it is servicable filter like k&n or similar.

Here is a few pics of what I have done with my air filter

Thanks for photos scholar. That looks like good location. Currently trying to get car rego as i bought a finshed (but without engineer permit) project. Will discuss moving the air cleaner when it makes the mechanics as i'm new to the SR20 and turbos so it bit of learning curve at the moment.

No worries,

It's a nice clean mk 2 with a few goodies you scored there, good luck with engineering process.

Well the rego run out last week and as the weather Is getting a bit ****ty now I decided to not rego it until after winter.
This will give me a chance to work on it and do a few jobs on it that just cant happen when car is driven regularly. There is some engine and suspension upgrades and tweaks I've been wanting to do for a while so this will be good time to get into those.....more on that as it happens.

I will miss driving the RS as I am too used getting my regular 'fix'......

Cheers

Hi,
Great thread.
I've got a 93 MX5 with an SR20DET and 5 speed gbox conversion.  The gbox has an electric sender and the MX5 speedo is mechanical.
I notice that you put in a mechanical sender and a custom speedo cable to get the speedo working.  Couple of questions;
-where is the electric sender located (I think it's on the drivers side)?
-how is it removed (spanner/socket)?
-does gbox oil flood out when removed?
-what mech sender did you use?  Is there a choice from difft Nissans to get the speedo almost correct?  The diff is 4.3 (I believe) and am running 205/45/16 tyres (standard diameter).
-you got a custom cable.  Could you get the orignal cable and have the gearbox end modified to fit the new mech sender?
Thanks heaps,
Bruce

Hi,
Great thread.
I've got a 93 MX5 with an SR20DET and 5 speed gbox conversion.  The gbox has an electric sender and the MX5 speedo is mechanical.
I notice that you put in a mechanical sender and a custom speedo cable to get the speedo working.  Couple of questions;
-where is the electric sender located (I think it's on the drivers side)? it is located on the right hand side of the gearbox extension housing.
-how is it removed (spanner/socket)? There is a 6mm(10mm head) bolt holding it in place.
-does gbox oil flood out when removed? Yes it does, but if you have a replacement unit ready you can minimise the oil loss and will only need a top up.
-what mech sender did you use? Another Nissan one that is same dimension and has exact same gear as the electric one. There is a pic of the speedo drive on page 5 of this thread.  Is there a choice from difft Nissans to get the speedo almost correct? Not sure on this one, I was more concerned about getting a speedo drive with same dimensions and gear to retain correct mesh etc. my speedo is slightly out but accurate enough for ADR compliance, so haven't bothered with it any further.  The diff is 4.3 (I believe) and am running 205/45/16 tyres (standard diameter).I suggest you just get it working first and then if inaccurate either have the speedo calibrated or use a over/under drive unit on the gearbox to get spot on.
-you got a custom cable.  Could you get the orignal cable and have the gearbox end modified to fit the new mech sender? Yes , but it isn't much different then having one made from scratch and you can have any length you like/need.
Thanks heaps,
Bruce

Hi James,
I used Haltech wiring loom (flying lead kit) for engine management. Standard Escort harness was retained although I upgraded main power/alternator wire and added starter motor relay to it.

Just read the whole thread. Awesome car mate. Have seen it around a few times (I live at Pt Noarlunga) and thought it had something special under the bonnet.

Awesome car mate well done. I'm doing the same conversion to my 2 door mk2 GL at least you had a nose cone to hide the intercooler.

Threads been idle for a while but may as well ask, is your bias box still routed through the escort brake failure switch to keep it legal?

RS 2000
Yes thread has definitely been idle hahah. Any modifications to the braking system will require you to have an engineer certify the mods. Every modified car is different it's best that you discuss your particular needs with an engineer, they will advise you what is required. Btw, I don't run brake failure switch.

Cheers

Thanks mate, i understand the need for engineers input, just mind mapping any future mods/plans and its nice to see people in sth aust who have done it etc.

Thanks

I’m running a float level switch in my brake reservoir which sarisfies my engineer as I have removed the OEM brake fail switch.
