New project for Racin Jason

Hi all,

I am about to embark on yet another project after a few years away from the scene working and concentrating on the family etc. Last car I built was a Mk 2 Cortina rat rod.

This time round I have scored myself another Mk 2 Cortina (surprise surprise) It's a total rebuilder, but it comes with a reasonably rust free body, complete condition, rolling and best of all it was the princely sum of $250.

It will need;

Full body restoration
Full respray
Full interior trim
Full driveline, suspension + brake restoration

so basically it will need everything re-done on it.

....and this is what I hope to create;

It's going to be a long road to travel down, but the good news is that I have a plan roughed out....and already have a driveline given to me for free, painter willing to paint it for free, free front seats, and easy access to almost everything else....one thing that I seem to be without is time. On that basis I envisage this will be a build that takes 1-2 years.

I'm going to be doing it to a strict budget of approx. $5000, and with any luck will bring it in around the $3000 level. Engine wise I am looking to use a low KM Nissan CA18DE engine and manual box I have been given for free.

Most of the work will be done like the rest of you in house at home in my garage. My brother is a gun welder so that's covered, and I can handle most of the mechanicals. My wife has proven her skills on a recent Rocking Horse restoration she did for our little daughter so she will get a gig in the build as well.

I'm keen to hear of anyone who has done the CA18 swap into an early Cortina. I'd like to hear about pitfalls, better ways of doing things and how easy the conversion really is. I'm also keen to hear about 5-stud conversions and what has been used in the past.

Wish me luck.....I'm going back in to Project Town!

Cheer,

RJ

Jason,

Good to see you back, and great to see another MK2 corina project!!! :)

Convopros suit the corty perfectly, if that is the wheel you are actually going for. It is the same look I want on mine.

If you're after specific info on ca's into cortys, check out the MK1 cortina site/forum as they have done it all before. Loads of info and picks, otherwise shirly might come on here and give you a few pointers,

...picking up the start of the engine tomorrow! I have been given a few parts for free.....so it all starts as of tomorrow.

I am really excited about this project....I will be incorporating loads of cool touches I have been storing up in my brain....I have always compromised in my past projects...but this one will be the full enchilada....with a side order of extra's

More pics to follow.

Quick update...

I scored my free CA18DE engine this week. It's from a FWD Nissan Exa and was a P%$#@ to remove, but it was free so I am not complaining. It's now sitting in the shed ready to be stripped externally and 'gasketised' before a quick paint and prep.

The engine is a solid running unit that I drove before yanking it. I am happy with my aquisition, and according to Wikipedia (and we all know the level of truth there[;^)]) the engine is factory equipped with 131hp. I'm factoring in a bit of loss, so 120 is probably reasonable to expect.

I have a second CA18DET engine in pieces, so should I need to rebuild at any stage I have suitable parts to plunder. Next on my hit list a gearbox, and I hope to have the car it will reside on home in a matter of weeks.

Pics will come up as they appear.

Cheers,

RJ
