How much is it worth??

Hi All,

I am considering purchasing a Mk2 2 door Escort round headlight front (not RS).
Body has minor rust and minor dents in usual places and requires a complete respray. Unregistered. Two litre engine stripped in parts, and gearbox require complete overhaul. Will be a tow home job. Car is in parts, however appears to be complete.

Owner is negotiable but so far asking $8000.

Is this a reasonable amount to ask?

I have lost track of prices and what things are worth.
I am in two minds about this as I am not in need of another project (and the responsibility) at the moment, however could be a great project in the future.

$500-$1500
If it was a Four door it would be worth 8g.[:x)]
Can you sell a finished MK2 Saloon for 8g? nope.
Tell him, "he's dreaming".

I would have thought that a relatively good Mk 2, 2 door body shell with all hinged panels alone would be worth $3K ?

Last three 2 doors i've purchased don't add up to 8G for all three.

For 8G I'd want a rego'd and roadworthy car that you step into and drive away

For that price it's not even worth considering........half that is pushing it!

Yer does seem a bit steep, have heard of some people paying 2-3k for good shells but 8 is pushing it a bit.

Going off description alone, I wouldn't pay more than $2,000 for something like that... unless it had some fancy bits which haven't been mentioned.

the man is clearly insane and must be taken away by men in white coats. I'm from Ireland where the price of Escorts has started to fall, mate of mine gave 1200€ for a 2 door in the same condition

3 parts to the purchase -

Body - Rust & dings. I'd also expect it needs paint
Mechanial - motor in pieces
Trim - ??

What are the positives here - its a 2 door (sorry MaxRS), any go fast bits or is it stock standard (you've already got a stock standard car)?

I'm with most others - if you really want it you might pay a couple of grand for it. If you don;t really need it, offer $500 and you might score a bargain.

Unless you want to pay this and we can then use it as a benchmark to justify asking higher prices for our own cars.

Just an example
Listed on Carsales.com 2000 BMW 325ci 2.5 6 cyl 8 mnths rego
5 speed Tiptronic auto, full leather trim with walnut trims, electronic everything, sunroof, new 18 inch BMW rims with 95% tyres, climate control etc. $10000 ono. I know what i would be buying. You would spend God knows how much getting the Escort anywhere near this level and would struggle selling it.Oh yeah plus it is 20 years older

I have acquired a 1980 2 door with minimal rust and panel damage(rolling shell with all panels and glass),a fairly heavily worked 2.1l pinto in bits,2 45mm webers on manifold, big valve ported head, heaps of bits and pieces,a 77 Ghia(no rust, but needs paint and engine rebuilt and refitted and another 77 2door(complete,1.6 with rusty floors, but virtually rust free elsewhere)for 2 weeks worth of my labour. As a spraypainter, these are probably costing me $13/1400,so $8K is dreamin'.

Hi Fellas,

Thanks for your comments.
Just as I thought, hence the post and the question.

I went and had a look at the car today. It looked very sad. The seller today told me that several other people have also looked at the car, however they have passed it up. It appears that it has been pulled apart as part of a resto, however somewhere someone has had a change of plans. The seller says that if he can't get the asking price he will wreck/part it out and get his $8K back that way.

So it might be the end of another perfectly good Escort.

Nikmag2,
Generally prices for these cars also appear to be falling here in Australia too, however it is difficult to get good quality cars. Nutters like us appear to be holding onto our good cars.

Hey, that is a good new topic!
How long have you owned your classic Ford?

I have started a new topic at

Ive found the Escorts aren't worth a great deal, I recently sold my mk 1 escort 2 door, that was in a simmilar state to the mk 2 you looked at. I only got $1800 for the lot.

I thought it was worth more but there was no one interested in it & it came close to going to the scrappers.

So I think the guy wont get $8k for a mk2, hes dreaming.

There have been a couple of nice mk 2 cortinas for sale that are going with rego & only require some minor cosmetic things to turn them into a real nice car. they have been selling for around the $6/7k mark which sounds like a better deal if your after a classic small ford
