Haydn's MK1

Here's some pics of the escort I bought a couple of months back. It had been owned by the same person for 40 years and I feel very fortunate to be the proud new owner. So far I have made a few small changes with some 13" dragway rims and sumitomo tyres, mountney woodgrain steering wheel, shaved antenna hole, rolled guards, new seat covers, fixed up electrics in the doors and indicators. Installed an alarm & some audio using the factory cut-outs in the body (rear mounted and stood off 4" MTX coaxials behind the vents and 8" free-air sub on the rear parcel shelf).

I have also bought a Kent 711M engine in great running condition. Plans are to bolt on a single side draft weber and lynx manifold, pacemaker headers and 2" zorst.

Some lovells will be going onto my front struts early next week and the leafs will be reset to match.

The vinyl roof is STAYING! i love it [^]
Some crappy phone pics..

Thanks! Yep, plan is to get it low asap. I have a pair of MK2 2L struts. Might just reset the coils by 3" and chuck em in. I'm sure it'll bottom out here and there but I won't be driving it like a rally car

Lovely escort, its got the extremely rare stainless wheel arch moulds!is the vinyl roof original?cant zoom in to see what the front badges on the guards are.does the car have a 2 dial or 6 dial dash?

Thanks celtic. Yes it's all original except the colour. The owner had it repainted about 20 years ago. It was originally more of a mustard colour and she wanted a canary yellow. But it's not quite canary, still has a hint of mustard. I bought a GT stripe kit for it before I picked it up but when I saw the trim around the wheels and doors I knew it was much better to keep them on and scrap the GT stripe idea lol. So there's 2 rolls for sale if anyone's looking. Quality Avery brand, $40 for both rolls.

It has a 2 dial dash and the badge is escort "super"

Yes the vents fit back in..look at pic 5. The speakers were spaced off the back of the panel for this very reason

Thanks guys. Sterling I know what you're saying about the tyres. I might go 175/60/13 next time and make a small modification to the front guards. The rims are zero offset, I went with the 50 series because I knew they would definitely clear the inner edge of the guards (see below) when turning.

Can I ask where you bought them from an how much?

Tim the front coils were reset 70mm. Off-the-shelf sports low coils wouldn't have given me the desired amount of drop.

Shaun, the tyres are Sumitomo HTR-200 175/50/13. I had them ordered and fitted by hornibrook motorsports in Virginia. They were $125 each incl fitting and balancing.

So the transplant is well underway! I'm so glad to be swapping a xflow for another xflow. It has saved me a lot of time and money being able to use compatible parts from the 1300. So far I have the 1300 out and have taken off the sump to use on the 1600. This is because the 1600 was on an manual box and it will be mating to my auto which has 2 more support bolts down the bottom. I removed the spigot bearing from the 1600 crank with the old "grease and hammer" trick. It took about 5 mins and two sockets but finally got there lol.

Had a win yesterday when installing the manual choke cable. There was a hole in the firewall being used by an electrical wire for the windscreen squirter. It was a good reason to get rid of that ugly reservoir bottle from the engine bay. Choke cable is now in its place and using a factory hole inside the car.

Managed to scrounge an engine mount from the 1300 to use on the 1600. I've tidied up the wiring a little, mainly making sure all the copper and lugs are well connected. I'll be spraying the bay black again, it's looking very patchy atm. All I'm needing is a sump gasket and the 1600 will be going in.

Oh yeah, I am putting on a single DCOE 40, and was told to block off the 2 vac ports on the distributor which I've done. I think the initial timing will need to be advanced a little. Any help in this dept will be greatly appreciated.

I'll get some pics uploaded tomorrow. It would have been good to get a before and after, but the 1.3 is out already. It's great to be able to take my time and not rush the work. Very satisfying.
thanks

Hayden I haven't read your thread for a while. I noticed you were going to use the sump off your 1300 on the 1600 engine. I did that once and it was a bad move. The longer throw of the 1600 crank brought the rods into contact with the sides of the 1300 sump. What it resulted in was not evidence while turning over the engine by hand. Once it fired up though was a rather loud (and embarrassing) banging noise. I had to remove the engine, take off the sump and relieve the sides of it to allow for clearance. Just make sure you don't fall into the same trap I did. You might be better off getting a sump off a 1600 engine. It may well be that on the later 711M engines the same sump was used for the 1300 and 1600. Just make sure of things before you put the engine in the car.
2010/04/11 15:29:24
ratta tat tat
Well, you won't believe it [V]

I put the motor in 2 nights ago, set up all my manifolds and plumbing etc. Fired it up yesterday for the first time and there was this very loud screeching noise. It's had me completely stumped. I thought it might have been the starter motor because when I turn the crank by hand I could hear the gears were still meshed. Turns out it's just the old pre-engaged lucas starter so I think that's normal. So I'm guessing after your comments Eric that it could be the sump! Oh dear. I'll be an expert engine fitter by the end of this.

2010/06/11 14:53:23
Timmeh
At least it's a different sound so maybe not the sump? Keen to hear how this one goes, hope you get it sorted with minimal hassle...
2010/06/11 21:28:32
ratta tat tat
Thanks Timmy, so do I! It sounded great when it fired up,, there's nothing connected after the extractors [88]
2010/06/11 21:47:53
Bloodyeck
Hayden, It is unlikely to be the sump if you have a screeching noise. The sump problem I had was more like banging a bit of tin with a hammer very rapidly. As I said previously, I don't know whether the later 1300 and 1600 711M engines share the same sump. If they do, then you're probably safe. Perhaps someone can advise in this regard. I used the 1300 sump from my 1970 Escort on my 1600 and had to take the engine out again.
2010/07/11 09:41:16
ratta tat tat
The 1300 sump I used is from a 1970 aswell. Was yours an auto sump or manual? My 1300 sump was with an auto and had the two support bolts at the base. It could be different, because like you said I haven't heard any banging.
I had a bit of a win today, adapting the metal tag on the rocker cover to hold my downshift cable, turned out very nice. Changed a couple of hoses and spark plug leads which neatened things up a lot. After the throttle cable is attached (I need a smaller size ball at the point of attachment) I'm going to paint the rocker cover in Ford blue. But for now, I'm just going to speak to a few auto electricians about my starter to see if it could be the problem and try to track down replacement.
2010/07/11 15:48:59
ratta tat tat
I took the starter into the local auto leccy today, ends up the starter was okay, but hahahaha, the clearance to ring gear has changed slightly. So I spaced the starter with spring washers and wallah! No screech. What a relief. So I'm gonna run the gauntlet tomorrow over to macs mufflers to put a 2" system and triflow muffler on. Then old mate Wayne at Perry engineering (the guy who did the head) will check the timing for me.
2010/08/11 18:54:35
ratta tat tat
Got ahead of myself. I took 3 hours today removing the motor and changing the sump over from 1.3 to 1.6. It was quite obvious where the rods had been hitting. But it was a very subtle noise, not a loud banging like others have described and the scoring on the sump was rather minor.

So the motor is mounted back in the car and bolted to the auto. all that's left to do is fix the drive plate to the ring gear, bolt on the manifolds, starter, generator, radiator, etc. Not much really. I might get back down there tonight and finish it off. At least I know now that everything is sorted and I can just get on with driving the beast. Can't wait!

Well done Hayden. Glad you got things sorted.
2010/11/11 09:55:47
ratta tat tat
Thanks Eric. Unfortunately I'm not out of the woods yet. The kickdown cable has become sticky from the heat off the extractors. There was about 40mm clearance but obviously that wasn't enough. There's also a drip from the rear seal on the sump- my fault for not following the manual and using jointing compound to seal it properly. The timing was looked at today and is all sweet. But the biggest problem I'm still trying to fix is my starter motor. Even though I have spaced it and there's no rubbing after start up, it continues makes contact when I'm off throttle. I'm struggling to know why it needed to be spaced at all. It worked fine on my 1300. I put it back together the same, I've checked it against the diagrams in my manual. AAArrrggghhh [x2x]

i love this car, looks like one i had my eye on in Redcliffe used to get around a every now and again, very elderly lady driving, cant be too many of those around same colour, wouldn't be the same car would it? great work.

ratta tat tat
Yes this is the car from Redcliffe. Ronnie was the previous owner. She mentioned about notes that were sometimes left on the car, people making offers and so forth. It sure is a little gem [:I]

Regarding my problems with the starter motor/ring gear...
I have spent a considerable amount of time measuring what I can through the starter motor aperture and have discovered that there is a 4mm difference between the rear of the block & crank face on the 681F and 711M engines. So what I'm now trying to find is a "crank spacer" about 4mm thick, that will set my drive plate back into the converter housing by 4mm allowing the ring gear to spin without fouling on the housing, and the starter motor to function as it should.

I'll have it finished on Sunday, it's all sorted now. Many thanks to the guys at Yesterford. Their knowledge and advice has been amazing.

ratta tat tat
It's judgement day lol. The screeching is all sorted now,, so I have everything installed & ready to go. The battery's on charge for the night and I'll be picking up some of that foil matting from somewhere??? to deflect the heat away from my selector and kickdown cables, they are only a few inches away from the extractors. I'm pretty happy with how the Ford blue turned out on the rocker cover. And I've just placed an order with Weber Performance in Melbourne for some alloy ram tubes and stainless mesh filters because the redline filter makes contact with the engine bay once the motor is running. A K&N filter would have been okay too but the ram tubes have a much larger bling factor [88]

Here's a pic from tonight

That's looking very neat. Well done. And fingers crossed its all smooth sailing from here.

I'm very interested to hear how it goes with the single sidedraft on there. I am thinking of doing the same kinda setup on my 1600. Let us know how it goes once you get it out on the road.
2010/11/24 09:30:38
ratta tat tat
Thanks a lot. Well it all went very well this evening. I've had it out for 2 runs. The power difference from the 1300 to 1600 is so much fun! And it really does sound great. Because the kickdown cable is buggered I've been shifting with the T Bar surprisingly no problems and I like it because I have control over the revs in each gear (except first to second which is automatically shifted by the transmission)

The temperature is all good, no oil leaks, no funny noises. So all that's really left to do now is re-adjust the tappets when it's hot and put on the ram tubes which should be here this week. Then it's just drive and enjoy [8)]

2010/11/24 21:02:27

2010/11/24 22:42:27
ratta tat tat
Cheers Timmy. Yeah I've been driving it heaps, it's hard to resist
I ended up having to send the ram tubes back to Weber on Thursday because my DCOE has unusual auxillary venturis that won't allow the tubes to fit. So I've used a slimmer K&N filter instead (44mm wide compared to the 51mm redline)

2010/11/27 23:25:28
ratta tat tat
G'day. Here's a couple of snaps of the engine all finished for now. As mentioned previously, the kickdown cable needs replacing at some stage preferably with a stainless one so it won't melt again lol. But the car works fine without it just using the T-bar.
And a little bit of rust repair still needed below the heater bubble. For the rest of it (which wasn't that bad) I used a wire brush & 3M rust converter then touched it up with some yellow acrylic.
It's all running great, I noticed there's a lot more odour with the breather cap and PCV line running to the atmosphere. But the look, sound and power improvements have made it all worthwhile [8)]

So did you grab a set??? Who can turn down a great tyre size at that price. I asked the fella at Wanli and he told me they comply with Australian standards etc. I have no complaints about them so far.
Another bonus is that the 195/45/15 is only 4mm bigger in diameter than the standard 155/80/12 tyres, keeping things legal. The only thing that could be picked on is the rim diameter being more than 2" bigger but saying my esky came with 13's as standard is a story most ppl would believe!

Hey Jonsey. Yep the can is sealed, it's a 'calibre' brand from supercheap. It's air tight and does the job well. The top comes off so baffling can be put in (not that I did but I want the option). The hose on the left runs along the top of the booster bracket and onto the PCV valve.
Kents have terrible blow-by once the rings are worn. I bought the catch can to ensure that none of the muck makes it into my cylinders or brake booster.

What a great couple of days! I've been up in central queensland and stopped in Bundaberg today to purchase the following!

711M 6015BA "high compression" engine from a 1975 escort with 234 cam! woot woot
Came with 4 speed box, engine mounts, starter motor, chrome air cleaner and factory exhaust manifold.

When I have some time, the blocks will be getting swapped over and maybe convert to manual.
I have a question. To make the swap quicker I was thinking of removing the head of my current motor, leaving the DCOE carb, manifolds all attached (my extractors have a flange plate) and bolting it all onto the HC block. Do you think there may be some differences in the HC head that means I would need to use it?

Anyway, here are some pics

I got stuck into the engine swap tonight. So far pulled most bits out leaving just the block. So tomorrow night I'll get it out and maybe bolt the sump and head onto the HC block. Yeah the gearbox came up well thanks Peter. I used 50/50 mix of chemtech CT14 and turps. Still needed lots of srcubbing, wiping and hosing though. The CT14 attacked the aluminium even after a good rinse so I had to spray on some RP7

Motor and box are resting on front engine mounts and trolley jack respectively. Next is to reposition rear engine mount & refit front swaybar (swaybar should never have come out  .
Then put head back on, set valve clearances, cables and fluids, oil pressure, fire up! etc. The end is in sight.

It's alive :)

I had no spark last night so this morning followed my manual and traced it back to a faulty condenser. With that replaced it fired instantly.

Clutch and gearbox work great. The custom gearbox crossmember I had bent up worked out sweet.
For some reason the toe on front left wheel is way out. All I did was remove & replace swaybar and drivers side tie rod end so not sure what's happened there???
So just some ethylene glycol, top up gearbox and diff oils, a few cosmetic touches and it's back to business.

First impressions new motor are good.  It's not a massive difference in power but def sounds tougher in the low range and will be a lot more fun with 4 on the floor

Make sure you get the front end alligned properly.

I replaced just the swaybar once without getting a proper allignment and wore out a set of tyres in no time flat.

For the sake of $70 bucks or so it's cheap insurance.

its still a commodore, and still a V6 :P

i enjoy hanging it on my mate with his VY ute, because in my XF wagon, i can keep up with him in the hills and windys, through the corners. His ute is an S pack, with SS suspension, and he can't lose my XF thru the corners hehe.

cool. i will be going manual one day, hopefully before i register it.

the front suspension still isn't in. i had the wrong tie rod ends (Mk2 rack) i had Mk1 ends. I'm going tomoro, the suspension should be back in tomoro, then if i get the indicators working, I'm going to attempt to get a permit so i can drive the escort, if I'm game enough to. at the moment the choke doesn't work properly, its missing a return spring of some sort, so the throttle sticks on. not nice in an auto.

After having this pinto sitting in the garage for months now I tonight decided to remove the cam cover and what a surprise! Crow mild street cam and double valve springs  The motor has had a very recent rebuild but I was aware of that the day I bought it. Fully rebuilt by a Melbourne company with a "warranty void if removed" tag on the block. I have no idea on the spec apart from the cam but it's enough for me to get excited about. I was undecided about using it because the crossflow really is an absolute pleasure to drive, especially up in the hills. But after opening up this pinto it's got to be time for a change  I'm hoping this heavy old beast won't change the handling too much. The extra torque will more than likely make up for it.

I have ordered a GRP4 top radiator panel and plain bottom panel from Fourd Performance (Paul T) to keep the 2L radiator modification nice and neat. I had a local guy lined up to weld it all in for me but his panel beater took another position today, leaving him with a massive work load. So a couple of weeks until that's done.

Thanks guys. It looks like it's been brazed. The sump baffle was brazed too but we ground it away before it got welded. Obviously it did SFA for the baffle, I hope it holds the pick up tube a bit better.

The sump might be a little outta shape when you bolt it back to the block. That's why they bronzed it.

Throw the cork side rails straight into the bin and lay down a nice bead of threebond grey replacing the cork. Put a thin smear on the rubber end rails of loctite 515.

I have been doing it this way for years. It will never leak oil ever. Threebond pretty much glues the sump on.

Cork is dead!!

That sounds like a good way to do it. I'll give that a try if the sump leaks.
I got a bit done the past few days. Removed the crossflow, put in the MK2 engine cross member, installed the pivot spacer and attached gearbox to the pinto. Removed exhaust. Next is to run the fuel line over the diff and down passenger side chassis rail, change the generator wiring to alternator wiring and install the pinto!

Thanks mate. It certainly took some time and patience to get it in there. No damage to the lip around the heater bubble so a pretty good solo effort.
Everything about the pinto looks better. It fills up the engine bay and looks more at home.
Not all that much to do I just need the time to get out there. I'm going to take an old muffler into the exhaust shop, get them to flare the pipe so I can slip it over and clamp to the extractors. Then drive over to to finish the system.
This car is gonna fly, I can feel it in my bones.

Thanks. All was set for the exhaust today but the battery had other ideas. High comp 2L killed it very quickly. I have replaced it with a Century 360CCA, ultra high performance.  The cables I had been using were about 16mm2. Too small for the bosch starter!! So now there's 25mm2 cables run in with the 16's,  soldered together into 35mm2 lugs. It's made a massive difference to the cranking. I highly advise anyone with a pinto to check the cable sizes and go for at least 35mm2. These pinto starters need a lot of current.

Burtons stock concentric tops made by GRP4.

I've got non-concentric tops with rubber bushing and spherical bearing from GRP4 and can vouch for their build quality. The owner, Thorsten, also doesn't mind imparting a bit of advice on strut top choice either!

Aussie options (k-mac and noltec) are quite pricey imho...

It's funny you should suggest them. These are the tops I've been leaning towards

Sorry to hijack, but as we are on the topic

For those pondering, the MP179 listed by burtons is manufactured by GRP4. The prices from burtons and GRP4 direct are exactly the same (once VAT has been removed from the burton web price). Make sure your get the right collar set with these tops aswell (purchased seperately)!! You will get 4 pieces (2 sets of collars). One set is placed through the central bearing from the underside and the other one is placed through the bearing from the top.

Be warned, these will raise the height of the front end on a mk2 by 25mm! I have witnessed this myself on my own car. So plan for that - otherwise an excellent bit of gear!

I fitted a 3.77 today and to be honest it's the best thing I've done. First gear is now 'usable', more MPH from each gear (still picks up fast) and accurate speedo!

MK2 1.6 Ghia-  19.2sec

Thanks Matt. I'm pretty happy how it's turned out. Just need a throttle cable bracket then some fun :) Also discovered (once the old manifold was removed) head has been mildly ported and polished.

A few little changes with my escort over the past 6 months. I put 13x5" steels on with 165 70 13 "Achilles" brand tyres which (much to my surprise) has made the car much more enjoyable to drive. Sure, it doesnt corner as hard but it's much lower and softens up the ride with the high spring rates I have.

Also the idle jet holder thread on my 32/36 carb body was stripped pretty badly, ruining the seat. So rather than replace same for same I upgraded to a reconditioned 38/38 from Carbtec who installed & tuned it for me.
It packs enough punch to notice the difference. I think the max power has moved higher up the rev range. Induction noise sounds nice too with the K&N filter.
Time for another test run at the track.

Cheers Peter. I'm guessing a few tenths will get shaved off, if I can get a good jump off the line. Throttle feel is a lot different with this carb and will take some getting used to
2014/08/18 09:27:10
what?
Maybe I missed something but why did you change from the twin 42's to the 38/38?
2014/08/18 09:52:22
ratta tat tat
They couldn't be tuned for whatever reason.
If I decide to go with twins again it will be with a NEW pair of 45 DCOE 152G carbs.

Only a few hundredths shaved off unfortunately, with a PB of 16.22 (last was 16.25)
Three runs, with the first two not really worth counting because the float level wasn't set right and the fuel bowl ran dry half way down the track! So I adjusted the float level and ran one more which was the PB.

The only advantage I can see of having a 38 is the instant throttle response. Wide open throttle it pulls only a fraction more than the 32/36 but the 32/36 is much friendlier in traffic and uses less fuel. (I'm not concerned about fuel economy but just making a point about the differences)

I've concluded that the head on my engine just has no more flow in it. I think the 38 will respond better with bigger inlet valves & some porting. So that must be the next logical step right  ??

Revised gearbox crossmember which can accommodate both 4 and 5 speed ford boxes by simply removing the 1" box steel and shifting the mount forwards or backwards.
89mm holesaw and new carpet on the way.

Progress has been a bit slow out in the shed. I've heard many people say putting in a 5 speed is time consuming, but it's for all the reasons I wasn't expecting. Like carpet, redoing my seat mounts and prepping/ repainting the floor.

The welder was a much needed tool and so far it's going alright. I'm using gasless wire which welds hotter than using argon, so I've only done spot welds. Sika11FC under the tunnel and on the inside edge of the gaiter holder to keep all water out.
The shifter hole was something I researched a bit before tackling, which I think paid off. Doing it this way is tidy & reversible, if you keep the cutting.

Some CSA Globes on the escort now, they're 13 x 6 with 23P offset and 205 60 13 tyres. No guard rub.
The wheels came with tyres but I'm not sure I like such wide tyres. 175/70/13 might look a bit better. Otherwise 185/65/13 but they're a very unusual size so hard to get at a good price. Thoughts??

After a test run this afternoon, alloys will be staying :) They're 2kg lighter per wheel (compared to steel wheels) which offsets the weight added by my new gearbox. It's also become apparent that the car needs a quick rack

I had the fronts fitted with that size today.
You're right, they do fit well. Tyre diameter is 14mm less than the 205's on the rear, so I may wind the front coils up a little. It's hard to tell if that needs doing. Some time with the car will tell

Love Globes on a Mk1. I'm a bit old school (and old) so I like the fatter tyre. 185 is probably a good compromise on a 6" wheel.

Agreed. I like the fact they're pretty much a ford wheel (think XA GT falcon) And the black/ alloy contrasts remind me of the RS4 spokes which always compliment a Mk1. Cheers Cam

I never knew the Cibie Oscars were popular with the 4x4 guys. Because of that there are plenty of second hand sets about. I got these for $80 and they cleaned up very well indeed! I'm on the look out for some brackets if anyone can steer me in the right direction, (preferably Australian made/ supplied) I'm just wanting the pair which mount them in line with grille.
Before anyone asks, I'm putting these on for practical reasons. Not decoration :)  I went for a spin up the mountains at dusk a week ago, I reckon it will be a lot more fun with these on!

Hey Scott. They look good, I only have this crappy pic off my phone. The last week has been pretty hectic with work, cars and cleaning up my shed. It's nice to have some room to move in the shed. Heaps done on my MK1 yesterday after a job cancellation. Installed thermo tec insulation and new carpets. If I ever need to do this again I will be employing the services of a professional auto trimmer. Enough said!!! Still the job went really well, just time consuming because I hadn't done it before. It really helped having the factory matting still intact under my old carpets to use as templates. Very good product and the perfect amount for an Escort coupe.

Test drove the car tonight and the sound dampening from the insulation is very good! As are the spotties. The car is very enjoyable right now. 3.77 diff, 5 speed sierra box, outlaw carb, new carpets & spotties, alloys & 205's. I'll be swapping out the front springs next. Going to a 5kg as opposed to the 6kg that came in the kit.  And also getting a quick rack at some stage. Aside from the paint & panel which isn't too bad, the car is near perfect..

Beware SAAS steering wheels! I just returned mine for a refund today after the RH spoke creased from merely rolling the car in & out of the shed over the past 12 months.

I bought a good used Nardi ND Classico to replace it. A worthy upgrade

The Nardi wheel arrived today. A great feel to it and looks the part. And a pic of a shifter pattern I bought a little while back on ebay for $6. I just filed down an old shifter knob and epoxied the cap on top. Also the new brown carpet.

And I got my springs swapped over just now, very quick & easy job with coilovers :D The coils on the left, now installed are the 5kg. On the right the 6kg. The 5kg ones look like a heavier spring than the 6kg although I'm no  suspension expert. A test tonight will reveal.

Hi guys, Well a few developments over the past few weeks. I visited Dunedin for the Otago rally a couple of weeks ago with my son which was a blast. Got to see some red hot rally action. Hayden Paddon and Alister McRae being the biggest highlights in their RS1800's!

And back home I finally got my 185 60 13's fitted to the 13x7 JBW minilites. I put them on my MK1 to see if they'd fit which they do, perfectly! And the car's handling has improved again. Faster acceleration due to less weight and less rolling diameter, and lighter, more responsive steering. The 13x6 205 combo is on the MK2 to get it through the road worthy inspection (at some stage)  then it will get lowered and I'll see how the 13x7's look on it. It might be hard to part them from my MK1!
A new motor has been built by Peter Baguley (Performance Thumpers Escorts) for the MK1. Some pretty gnarly specs on it and will see close to 140RWHP at around 6500
The current 2L will be going into the MK2 mated to the automatic which will make for a fun cruiser.

I'm also looking for an HD clutch that's road friendly. There's one on the new motor but it's an uncushioned 4 puck button clutch which I think will be awful on the road. So shoot me a PM if anyone has one spare. Cheers

Woo hoo. That new motor should get the Mk1 moving nicely!

A few of my mates were also over in NZ for Otago. Did you notice the red Gemini coupe with Maxxis tyre stickers? He's an old Escort campaigner from way back but bought the Gemini over there to run the event.

Hi Cam, yep I did notice it. I believe it was badged Isuzu. Plenty of cars from leftfield there. There was a KE70 that was very entertaining on the Tarmac Super Stage. I think about 40% of his run was on 3 wheels!

Hi Drew, cheers mate :)
We're confident for figures above 130rwhp. Hoping for close to 140 :)
The tyres are good for the money about $95 fitted & balanced. Just the fact they're lighter and narrower makes a huge improvement to the handling compared to 205's. The offset of the 13x7's has helped a lot too. Car is way more responsive, easier to throw around and acceleration greatly improved by less rolling diameter. I worked it out on gearcalc, 185/60/13 tyre is the equivilant of dropping from 3.77 diff to 3.89.

Hi Glenn, thanks for your comments. The wheels are 0 offset. Here's the link to them, also happens to be the business I bought them off. I recall you saying you didn't want to roll your guards? They will need to be rolled to fit these. I"m not aware if any "off-the-shelf"  13x7's that have a positive offset

Keep all original parts inc engine in case it means an extra "mozza" when sale day comes, even decades from now........originals like this one may soon fetch XYGTHO silly money, as theyre nigh on impossible to find.  Great heir-loom to leave the kids !

She's long gone BEEVEE. Original motor went to a guy who need a 681F block for his genuine 1300GT. Grille went to a twin cam owner who needed to change from round headlights back to rectangle. I took the car to the original owner, Veronica not long before I sold it. I could tell she was a little disappointed with the very subtle changes I had made. But her husband Arthur was well impressed. Loved the engine & webers!
