Neale's Patina Cortina

Well ive started another project I wasn't going to do it, but becsuse of my complete lack of self control, & encoragement from other forum users after seeing Racing Jasons Ratter (& also no one wanting to buy it)ive started the cortina. I know I should be doing the escort but I thought it was a waste to just have the corty sit up in the shed doing nothing plus it cant be that hard to get on the road(famous last words). So the project started!!!

The details of the car are:-

Its a 1969 Mk2 ford cortina 440 L, 1600cc with a 4 speed coloumn shift manual, all standard grandads car from Bathurst (complete with sun visor & original hubcaps.

The only rust I can find is just where the paint is thin on top, so it seams to be a good start.

we thought the hardest bit of the build would be that the gearbox has been dismantled by the previous owner for parts, to keep another car going so dad & I got another gearbox from a Mk 1 cortina from the shed & converted the linkages from floor to column shift, which is not as easy as it sounds (there like a mechanical rubicks cube).

After that was done we turned attention to the motor so, rebild the carbie, plugs, leads & harmonic balencer. We then tried to hand crank the motor & it is ceased!!! so off with its head & found the rust!!! #2 piston has water in it!! & the head is rusted!!!

Here are a couple of pics of what I found in the motor

the head has come up pretty good despite rough apperances & the pistons are soaking in rust penetrating chemicals, So we'll see how that goes but we should be able to get it going still[^]

hey! COOOOOOL! Mine did sell......a long while ago, and now resides somewhere in NSW I think.

You car is basically exactly how mine was when I rescued it from the wreckers. You are going to have a ball with this thing. So much to do....so let your imagination run wild.

Hey what about a twin carb set up? Maybe some velocity stacks poking through the bonnet? How about some 'Lake pipes'?????

Like I said so much potential. Good luck with the build, and I will keep an eye on this one's progress.

I got told the heads with the combustion chambers are the GT ones...

thats just an early 681 head. They had the combustion chamber partly in the head, then the 711 motors had a flat head with combustion chambers all in the slugs.
The pistons on Neales motor also have the full ring around the bowl where the later ones had valve reliefs.

Hi Shaun, they are flappers from Antique Tyres, I had some red done on the RS late last year and they have faded already[:(!] sop I decided to bar that again.

thanks 4 the info on the heads guys, as im still learning, this stuff is handy to know.

Well there has been little progress since I found out there has been another hurdle (always seams to be the way). Where my cars are living peacfully in the back yards carport, will soon be a double story duplex if the landlord has his way. So ive bitten the bullet & Im moving to Bathurst, this is good news for the cortina seeing as that is where it came from (& still has the Clancy Motors Bathurst sticker on the back window).

The motor is still refusing to budge. So the motor that was going to go into the escort will be going into the cortina to speed up the process. Now that im selling the escort aswell the corty may get some money spent on her in the way of go fast bits to keep in the ratter style of, doesnt matter what it looks like as long as it goes fast. Still undecided on what to do but a period turbo setup would be cool. Any other Ideas out there????

Turbo is good....but a supercharger is real period stuff. I personally would use a small toyota blower and dress it up accordingly.

Most pre-70's hot cars used superchargers as turbo technology was seen as being exotic. Either way it sounds like the thing will get some decent power....something mine lacked!

sounds like a plan jason, ive been sussing them out and they arent that dear. its something a bit different too. I want to put this car on club rego so I need some proof that people out there did this mod.

Does anyone have any period advertsements for people that did this mod or simmilar cars that had this done to it.

g'day Neale. I've thought of doing this to a kent motor too. I know I've seen some articles somewhere around the books mags etc.

There was this one on 105Speed about a Shorrock supercharger on an Anglia.
http://105speed.com/default.asp?id=277

I'll see if I can find anything else.

That's an interesting pic.....one that hold a lot of interesting little features.

You could easily substitue the Toyota blower for the Shorrock unit - they even have a similar 'webbed' outer casing. Grab a 2-inch Jag SU carby and fabricate the piping etc and paint it all a dull grey color.....use some rubber hose and period clamps and find a Ram-flow aircleaner and BINGO - period supercharger set-up.

Food for thought!

I had a look at one of those toyota blowers & some of them have a clutch setp that allows you to disengage the blower when you want. Good idea for long freeway trips to lesen the strain on the motor.

plus as a bang for buck mod, double the power for around $500-$600, sounds good to me.

Well its been a while since ive updated this!!!

Since the last post incase you didn't know Ive moved to Bathurst, so the car has also changed homes to Mum & dads backyard

I promised mum it wont be there long so dad I have been making some progress to get it on the road.

Ive since decided to ditch the old rusty motor that was in it & go for the reco motor that was going to go in the escort. Good news on this front as we found its been done up to GT spec about 8,000kms ago

Also I was going to use the original Column Shift manual. But because it had been partialy dissmantled we decided to put it in the too hard basket.

We have since found a Close ratio Mk1 cortina floorshift (same as the twincam escort box) in dads shed that is in good nick & because the shifter comes out close to the firewall we can keep the bench seat

We also had a little drama mating the mk1 gearbox to the mk2 bellhousing but nothing a little machining couldnt fix.

So now thats all together the next step is to put it in the car fit extractors & get it going, do the brakes then we should be nearly there.

Also We also had a little help when we were doing the gearbox
