Mk 2 Cortina Rat Rod...PROJECT FINISHED! - page 3!

Hi all,

It's been a while since I've been in the forum....busy, family...meh who cares....I HAVE A NEW CAR!!!!!

I really have taken to Rat Rods in recent times, and hankered after one....well I have always wanted to build one....so my chance has arrived! I found it in a wreckers, and landed it for four tenths of FuC% all!
[bBEHOLD....THE GREEN HORNET![/b]

As purchased;

The rear!

The engine bay....don't expect much. Stock 1600, column auto and this is the way it's going to stay!

Peg on the nose as you look inside! What you can't see is the front seats are very rare fully reclining low back buckets....which fold down to create a freakin bed!

I'm going to go the full rat treatment, period accessories, wheel spats, whitewalls, leave the peeling paint, the standard driveline, but lower, and add some pretty cool one off touches.

Peeling paint?...check this out.

It's great to be back!

RJ

P.S. - In case your wondering...I always name my cars, Green Hornet sounded pretty good for a Rat Rod.

Work has commenced despite the freezing cold temps....my idle hands need to work.

I fitted some very cool retro seat covers, fitted the 8-ball to teh column shift and started to re-wire the dash (a practice I always carry out on new Cortina aquisitions).

Will have some pics up soon.

Gotta love long weekends! Did heaps of work today, and the green booger is starting to take shape. Here's the hard graft so far;

New grille, custom grille badges, painted wheels, refitted all side and boot badges where possible, repositioned rear vision mirror added Escort bumper overriders (have some for the rear too;

I've also done a fair bit inside, and there are a number of cool little touches in there - will have some more pics up soon. On a side note, I've built a number of cars in the past, but can honestly say I can not remember having so much fun doing a car!

The thing isn't perfect by a long shot, so the near enough is good enough mentality works....and if you have no cash or no time....it's perfect. I really am having fun with this one.

Hello Jason,

Great new project!

What happened to the black RS on the spit??

RS on the spit? Sorry, I think you might have the wrong Jason.

The only thing I had on a spit was a pig we caught in NT.....mmmmmm cooked wild boar!

More pics are coming....fired the thing up on teh weekend! It dosen't have brakes yet, butthat didn't stop me putting the family in the back for a ride around the back garden[88][88][88][88]

The roof has grown a surfboard, the dash is finished and now has a covert CD player installed, there's some old school space speakers going in and I found a period correct round Ram Flo for the engine!

I hope to have the scallop painted on the side soon, then there's the custom rear air-shock set up, the reversed leaf springs, wheel spats and white walls....oh and a venetian and sunvisor to go on....and the best bit is how much I've spent.

NOTHING SO FAR!!!!!! HAHHAHHAHAHHAHAHA I never new ratting was so much fun.

Oh and the Mk 1 Cortina is in the shed collecting dust for a while, and the Mk 1 Escort has been sold to a dude here in SA.

Cheers,

RJ

Love it...

Every time I see a rat style car I always think that I need to give that a go. Seems an appropriate style to go for give everyones apparent lack of cash...

Jason, Your enthusiasm in the way you attack your builds, (and of course the fabulous write ups) is always contagious... Somehow I always seem to get stuck into my car again after reading your builds.

Glad you stuck around...

Keep it up, Shaun

that looks cool, Have you thopught about some old school scroll pinstripes for the leading edge of the boot and bonnet? I cant wait to see more mods done to it. Owen

i think that pinstripping they do on the rat rods, and impalas and stuff, the freehand kind of tribal pintstripping would look mad on it, woodnt have to pay someone to do it either, just a thin brush a steal a design off the net,keen to see the finished outcome

Hehe.... I'm having an "I Hate Work" moment and thought I'd have a quick look at some of the forums I used to haunt when I seemed to have so much more time.

What can I say..... will be great to welcome a ratter Mk2 Sporty to the streets of Ideal-Aid (Adelaide for those more sane than I).

Gotta say that the rat look is a hell of a lot of fun. You can pretty much look at anyhting off an old car and think.... can I adapt that to my project? Or, you go for the period accessory route...... or a nice mix of both.

Good to see the front mudflaps in play. They are cool and not hugely embraced, even among the accessory gurus. Big fan of the look you have invisioned. The single silver scallop would look mad.

My two cents so far...... not too sure about the idea of laying lines in the celtic style on this ride. I think the scallop would look awesome and the pinstripping might be overkill........ also I think it's that style of pinstripping is getting a bit played out, but thats just my opinion (Of course if you can get the Doggy to do something for you then all bets are off.... that would be unreal). I would be yanking the window tint too..... but again thats just my style.... I don't like tint on classics...... so 80's.

You need a leather stitch on steering wheel cover too. Should be able to grab one off eBay.

Some things I love about this car - It's a column auto....... that's so freakin cool! Low line bucket seats...... sweeeeeet! Over-riders for front and back...... DAMN YOU.... I only have rear ones..... [8~2] Good natural progression to crappy paint.... very important in the rat world not to fake this look.....front side mudflaps..... awesome... love 'em except due to lowness they start to rip off as mine have done......and thank god you took that "Select" sticker off the windscreen.

Also..... just a tip..... be careful calling this a rat rod in certain circles. I simply call mine a ratter because rat rod has certain connotations and on hot rod forums they ger very "flamey" about what a rat rod is. Anyhow I don't want you to cop a shot in the back with a musket. [B)]

hey racin jason, i have a sterring wheel cover you can for the postage, is a black fake leather ( very 70's ) if your keen. i can post pics if you like. Owen

racin jason
Sweeeeeet dude, post a pic and fire me an email...I might have something to trade you for it!

I'm glad you guys like the car, as I was originally going to bung on a set of Lotus Steels, lower it an flog it off. The alure of the Rat was too hard to ignore, and the opportunity to live out an auto passion too hard to pass up...so THE GREEN HORNET was born.

I was/am thinking about some Rat Rod stripping, and I feel some grey/red/black striped around the boot lock and centre of the bonnet will be a good and correct addition to the car.

One thing I am being careful about is not 'overdoing' the car. I guess it's all a test and try scenario and you never know what works until it's fitted.....so I'm testing the waters with a few items.

I really need the following;

1 - rear window ventitian
2 - Front screen sunvisor
3 - Head light eye brows
4 - a good set of 13 inch radial tyres

I'm hoping to crank hard on it this weekend and have my home made wheel spats in place! As Bauldrick would say.....'I have a cunning plan'

Stay tuned more rat updates as they happen.

Hi Guys,

I have been working away on the car and progress is steady. I have managed to get the 'dual note' horns working and am thinking of externally mounting a pair of them...under the front bumper by the over-riders.

On a side note, I have been playing with the old photochop program. I have messed around with the stripes and would like your thoughts;

Silver highlight;

Red flash;

White blaster;

Silver enhancer;

I'm keen to hear what you all think.

The danger with using red on the side is that it needs to then be the same red as the rims and then the danger is that it is too much red. If you use a different red it looks like you were simply unable to match it. I think it is safest to go a universal colour that will go with anything else you do to the car. Hence the silver works well, or perhaps the white. Maybe even a more subtle gunmetal grey.

i had a mesh sunvisor that ended up in the back of the shed it got bent so i chucked it out, i have found a supplier of new ones the mesh type is $175

I'm spoilt for choice aren't I! I guess that's the cool thing about Rat Rods......anything goes, and you never make mistakes....UNLESS! You do too much....and then it looks like your trying too hard.

The colour matching should be easy, as the wheels are a temp colour I had lying around, so the final paint should be easy to match....Thank you Super Cheap!

The wheel spats are my feeble attempt at photochopping, but I am making my own spats from Brownbuilt shelves! I found a bunch of them rusting away behind the shed, so they are being rescued and put to good use.....more on them as the happen!

Finally, I have a mate making a bonnet emblem for me....and it looks stunning. It's probably too good to put on the car, but I will use it as he has put in so much effort. It's going to be a 'Hornet' in flight mode....and this dude is machining it from a steel ingot! How lucky am I.

More soon.

Hi all,

Have been a little side tracked with things, but have found time to sort some more on the Green Hornet! Big thanks to the following people;

Brenton (AKA Chobis) - Free all steel sunvisor!
Richie at Wheelworx - Free billet steel Hornet bonnet emblem!!!![:u]
Graham from Woodside[;^)] - Free headlight trims, indicators and wicked and very old roof rack!

I have done mainly little things since I posted last, so I will let the pics do the talking;

This pic gives you an idea of how low the beast is now....2 inch blocks and reversed leaf springs for the WIN!

Well I have managed a few days over the last few weeks....and the Green Hornet is nearly across the line!!! Here's a few more pics;

Temporary Lotus steels from my Mk 1;

This is a good shot to show the slammage I have managed to get;

Inside I am done.....and it's a pretty funky place I must say!

Under the bonnet I have been busy, and despite appearances.....it runs wildly! I adjusted the tappets, did an oil change and it goes like a peach!

Finally.....I have turned my nand to making a set of wheel spats from old Brownbuilt shelves I had lying around.....yes I said shelves......don't ask[88] Anyway, here's the mock up;

More pics as soon as I stop watching Dancing with the Stars!

The whitewalls really do make a HUGE difference. For those in SA/Adelaide....your hook up for the whitewalls is as follows;

Adelaide Whitewalls (Mark Arnold)
Ph - 0410 690 182

The ones I have on mine are 20mm, as opposed to the usual 10mm other companies do. Mark offers both, but will work with you to find what works best on your car.

Tell him Racin Jason O'Halloran recommended you!!!!!

Cheers,

RJ

how do whitewalls work??

is it dye or like a paint/coating?

do u get them done or can u buy tyres already white walled?
2009/08/16 22:37:01
chobis
You can buy tyres that already have the whitewall but they are far more expensive than regular tyres. Usually only see these on yankee vehicles or the snob set classics (ie MG's, Jag's etc).

This method involves shaving a width of tyre from the current wall between 1 and 2 inches wide. Then a compound is laid into that area. It is not very thick and can be done in a large variety of different colours depending on who does the job for you. There are many that say that this process is dangerous as it is taking some strength from the side wall of the tyre...... for me personally I don't care because I am not driving any of my cars around the Neurbergring. Aside from that I have been putting whitewalls on every car I have owned for a great many years and never had a single problem. Have never used Adelaide Whitewalls that RJ has recommended, but I might give them a go next time as I like the look of the 2 inch jobbie he has had done and my bloke only does 1.5inch.
2009/08/17 10:17:01
chobis
Just had to do this in order to see them both at the same time....... as RJ says in his Sig..... "ONCE YOU GO RAT.....YOU NEVER GO BACK!"

2009/08/17 12:42:05
racin jason
SIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK[^][^][^]

The thing with 'laid' whitewalls is that the rubber removed from the side wall is usually no much more than the raised portion the actual tyre size is represented in....so technically there is actuallly no side wall compromise.

I recently saw an elite level drift car driving on 'laid' white walls....lap after lap....over 120kmh cornering and everything else drift inflicts upon the sidewall of tyres and there was ZERO problems.....so I'd say that was probably the very best test right there to their saftey.

I paid under $100 for mine.....and they make my Mk 2 look about $2000 better......WHAT A BARGAIN!

Sunshine full pics coming soon!

The Green Hornet is finally finished (apart from the minor running problem - I.E. it isn't actually running at the moment[88]) Here are some pics of the finished article.....I am happy![^]

The group of cars we shot;

2 x Cortina's, 2 x Izuzu, 2 x Toyota, 1 x Porsche, 2 x VW, 1 x BMW....which was as Borat put's it.....verrrry nice!

The very rare reclining 'bed seats';

Here's Brenton's Mk 1 and my Mk 2 side by side in the carpark;

As you all know I saved this Mk 2 from a wrecker here in SA, so here are the 'Before + After' pics!

AFTER

So there it is.....another project finished! I'm now on the look out for another car to jazz up, so the Mk 2 Ratty is heading to Ebay tonight to free up some cashola. I guess build, enjoy the creative process and find them good homes is going to be my way of life[;^)]

Yes I am torn between the Devil and the deep blue on this one. I do like the car, and have really enjoyed building this particular style of vehicle....but with a family limited time and a Mk 1 Corty in the shed.....anything else stays for a short time not a long time.

I guess building the Mk 1 Escort and the Rat Mk 2 as I have in the last 6 months has been fun, but I'm ready for my next project. I think I am a 'builder' rather than keeper kind of guy. I could quite happily keep the Mk 1 Escort and Rat....but itchy creativity fingers prevent this from happening.

I am happy I saved this car from the wreckers though....and hope to do a similar thing again very seen. I'm keen to build a Classic Ford in the 'South London' style, or perhaps as a 'Pro-Touring' style. So many options.....so little time.[8~2]

This is it, its a '69 440L with the bench seat & column shift manual, the only rust is where the paint is thin on top so its a good start. I recon it would make a cool rat rod style cortina. It was a one owner from bathurst when my dads mate bought it with the intention of doing it up & I bought it off him. So it still has the original hubcaps & sunvisor.

That Dodge is just awesome. Its dripping with patina

And that split screen kombi would be worth a bomb wouldn't it? I thought they were getting really hard to find and the VW guys would go nuts over them. If you can get it cheap, grab it!

And your Corty would make an excellent ratter too. Looks like an excellent starting point

....go forth and rat my disciples![88]

It truly is a great experience to take what most see as a hunk of **** and make it into something very cool. It takes real skill to do a rat well....and once you start you will soon see exactly how hard the process can be.

The Dodge and VW are cool projects....but the maroon Cortina is PERFECT! Please have a go and join a very select bunch who have had the balls to venture away from the norm.....especially in Classic Ford small vehicle circles.

Good luck and please keep us all updated.

Here's some inspiration for you neale. Fellow club members GT Cortina. bought from Leeton gave it the once over & straight back on the road.
I call this the South London look.

Also my 100e in her full original glory, you'd be surprised how many people tell me NOT to paint it, leave it as is.

Also check Owens thread about his V6 Banger

there cool, I had a good look at the corty in your pics, on the weekend at the CAP club show. I like the orange wheels hes got on it now, I donk know why but it seams to work for that car & everyone goes for the red wheels. I think you should leave your car like it is aswell, Its a unique paint job that took many years to complete all it needs is white walls

The corty got most rust spots award.

I just got the interior done in the 100e, next is pinchweld then the white walls along with MKI corty front suspension 105e anglia rear diff (so I can put my fat steelies on) and ultimatley when the engine dies...

1.3L GTI twin cam with suzuki sierra 5 speed box, but I'll keep it really quiet.

I love this car, even the wife wants to learn to drive it. And you can just do bits & pieces while you enjoy driving it around.
