Some details....

Car was basically most things renewed replaced you know....
My dad and i painted it, could be better as were a bit short for time as i needed the car for uni work etc. But i'm happy with what i spent.

All door locks removed, boot lock removed, electronic boot release. Alarm central locking keyless etc etc.

Inside are all basically recoded except for seats but they are fairly good. Little bit of stereo apline mp3 headunit, 2x 6x9, 2x 6.5" 2x12" subs, running of 5 channel v12 alpine amp 4 x 85w + 180W sub. Goes fairly good i'd say around the 140db- 150db mark but i never take it to sound offs etc. compared to a mates at 145db it seems to have a bit more power.

Engine recoded 40thou k's ago now, 40thou bore, std bottom end, mild crow cam, std valves, ignitor ignition, dynoed at 112bhp with twin 40 webbers. 1 5/8 prim extractors to 2.5 collector to 2.5 exhaust (loudish), 5 speed sierra, std diff with yellow konis and 4 leafs in rear. 17 x 7 mags 40 profile tyres, fit perfect no spacers etc etc.

i've had enough typing now, maybe another day i'll add to it.

Well i said i'd update it, has nearly been a year

Heres some fuel injection gear im working on atm.

Theres the megasquirt ecu and relay board (ps bud .png images are blocked)

Heres how its basically going to be setup, with air pipe ( not using that k&n filter gettin smaler one) Oil catch can goes inot the air tube thats off an alfa by the way. the Aux air valve on the ground there goes to the bracket where the IAC was meant to go. thats also off an alfa, and the fuel pump, it amazing what you find in the shed [88].
Got the full variable TPS, a delco MAT for the rear plug on left, running 4 wire narrow band lambda will upgrade to wide band when megasquirt 2 comes out. (stubbie wont be included in final installation, however will be consumed while installing)[(#)]

Rs look great grant, you know it would be awesome if you dropped a cosworth motor in, (hmmm if only you had one lying around in the garage)[88] any way, the fuel injection system should work great, will also look very neat. Let me know how you go with the mega squirt (tuning wise)

The megasquirt is funto tune, the new version (when i get it) calculates VE tables on the fly so that makes it a lot lazier to tune it, which suits me. I might go distribuitorless yet , but for now i'll probly need a run on the dyno to get the timing right.

It should be on by now but i've been crook for 2 weeks so you get that

you should buy a RS sierra or escort cosworth, and with the left overs build the rs cossie, and if there is any left overs after that, buy bigger turbos and aftermarket stuff!!

But i just remembered you have a missus?? so that would mean you get nothing out of the 50gs[88][(#)] if your lucky she might lend you some money! haha

Put in new cross member last night.

Bit of gear on the manifold, MAT bored in,

Change in plans now running std fuel pump and leccy pump, surge tank under bonnet, carbys mite come out this week

The megasquirt is all ready to go, the hardest thing i think is working out where to put it. the relay board goes under the bonnet so then just run a db27 back to the ecu. I'm runing electronic ignition now, will see how it goes should handle it. I'll probably be looking at distributorless EDIS board for it when the new MS chip comes out.

Just gotta take those bloody extractors out again to put the lambda in [V]

Managed to get a fair bit done over the last few days, extractors have been in and out and o2 flange fitted, carbys off , wiring harness is done, just need some wrap for cables, run a few other power wires etc ecu is mounted as in pic, relay board is going infront of fuse box (engine bay) then connects to the ecu with db37.

Should be going by the weekend or on the weekend i hope. Just have to sort out a air intake tube not using the old one anymore.

After that i plan in getting a megaview display and mounting that between the console and ashtray surround gap with a usb connector on the edge for tuning it.

I could have said the same a few months ago, but it's actually pretty straight forward once you get into it. Each wire from each switch etc just goes to the labeled spot on the relay board, power plug in and thats basically it.

I forgot all about the throttle linkage, working on it tonight.

It was probably the cheapest option and has a lot of features and addons, if people understand it's the linux of ECU's and just like linux time will increase the popularity then price. I picked up 2 ecus and a relay board with cases for $500US so around $300 au but that was the quick way out as i don't have enough time to build one.

I saw these a while back but wasn't to keen on the idea, so my dad decided to do an engine and ecu conversion on his car with one, i was waiting for the day i could laugh at him when it got throw in the bin but that hasn't happened yet. His is running fine we tuned ourselves with little knowledge of efi, ecus (believe me it does run ).
He is doing another one for his other car, and i'm doing one for mine, so were both getting a lot better with how it all works.

I'm putting the car back together today so shouldn't be long off

Great work Grant (and Grant Senior ).

Seems as though you and your Dad are the MS ginea pigs of this forum. I have read alot about MS and it's success but unlike most things that come comparitively cheaply this looks like a decent product. It also has decent support through it's own forum etc.

Regardless of the outcome, for the financial outlay you can't go wrong

Well its all on and wired up, everything seems to be working, however the injectors aren't firing at all, aren't getting any current. Just some grounds need taking care of nothing major. i think the cos injectors might be coming out and the sierras are going back in the cos yellow are low impedance by the looks and the sierras are highs.
Got about 3 fires out of it by hotwire grounding the injectors however it's hard to tap the wire at 1ms intervals.

should be going soon heres a pic of the current mess/engine bay.

[:I] Uh seem to have worked out the "problem", the ecu got mixed up with the other 2 here and well it didn't have the code loaded into it, so a quick upload an it was away. [88]

With a VERY dodgey ve table i mean 47 in every box at every rpm, it fired up in about 1 crank and began idling, once it warmed up a bit set the idle back, once a bit hotter you could actually rev it. Ran great idled pretty good, i was surprised at how good it ran considering there was nothing fine tuned it in.

So after hours of swearing and swearing and testing and swearing thats all it was, i checked every wire on the db37 ( as i had to make on) and all tested fine, replaced the injector Fet's on the board and the injector driver chip.

I now just have to put everything back on/in the car i pulled back out when problem hunting, and make a intake and air filter up and then i can start tuning it on the road.

Just took it for a strap around the paddock, goes very well from what i've seen better then the carbys.
Well my generated ve table seems to have worked, had to raise a few in the lower rpm sections. There is a dirty big step up in the 3d graph from 47%VE to 104%VE between 3000rpm - 3900rpm at 100map which stay the same working down through the maps. I don't know if it should be like that however thats when the cam comes on power and once you put your foot down it takes off straight up to the 6K mark.

Still to make a propper intake as the current is um sticky taped on which is why its not going up the street yet. I'm going to run some ducting from the throttle body through that hole at the front in the engine bay which is plated up and hang the pod filter in behind the nosecone.

Got it from house of hoses, was $18 for a metre. I got a rubber 90 degree bend from diesel spares for $16 as well, just got dremil onto that plate at the top and it basically pulls out with a few bends, jammed the rubber bend in there now just plug up the hoses.

I was going to run just an air vent into the engine bay but then decided to run the filter outside, to give a little extra room.

You dont have to do any major cutting to do this either, just hit the bit of weld then it comes out, so it can be easily put back in the car in the future.

Got a filter and fitted. ironing out a few bugs still.
Got a few more laps in paddock done doing a bit of tuning, however paddock isn't coping too well . Got it running a bit better and took for a drive up the road however it only runs at "paddock" speed up the road as thats all its tuned for [88].
Still got a fair bit of tuning to do but im on track now.

Problems with the coolant temp sensor its a different resistance then what i need ie bosch parts, wired a resistor into the circuit which brought the resistance to where i need however as its a moving resistance i need a varying resistor etc etc so that plan fell on its arse. At the moment i just have it locked to "think" its warm. Working on this problem.

Another thing, ie Andrew read this.
With the aux air valve im using, i had it tucked under the plenum, it also has air going through it so it stays pretty cool. The problem i found was it wasn't getting hot enough under there, as once you turn the engine off it will cool very quickly, then when you try and crank the engine again ( when its hot) the air valve will have cooled and is sucking in more air again, but the problem is the coolant temp will be at 71degrees etc (warmed running temp) and it switches off the power to the air valve so the valve can't close as it has no power any more and its only going to open more as the air dragging through it is cooling it down more and more.
So it's now bolted onto the extractor side of the tappet cover on an alloy plate so it remains hot when the engine is off. I'll get a photo tomorow.

Grant are you using a bosch fast idle auxillary air valve? if so they were designed to run independant of the computer, and would work as yours appears to on engine bay temperature and would create the situation you described if hooked up to the ms. if you want to use the computer to control the aux air valve you need one which is just an on off vacuum switch.. it should be independant of temperature under the hood etc wired in so that when it recieves power from the ms (warmup), it is open.. otherwise its shut - the ms controls it based on coolant temp.

Andrew thats the one. The MS coolant vairables control whether or not the fast idle is activated, and once it hits warmup it throws out the switch in the relay board turning off the power to the aux air valve. If you've got it wired up independant theres going to be power to it all the time, it requires ms to tell it when to turn off, then once it is turned off the actual heat not power keeps it closes.
This was taken off an alfa, and from it they are bolted to the alloy tappet cover which transmits a lot of heat and keeps it warm after engine shut off.

As i said if this cools down on its own while the engine is still hot and reading 70degrees coolant hot the ms wont even power it on and it will just drag air through it cooling it down more and stay on forever.
When i tried mine under the manifold it worked closed up from power not heat then shut off but after turning the car off for a while it was cold straight away. This bracket i've got on the extractor side works fine now, it gets pretty warm from the extractors and the alloy is the best transmitter of heat.

Grant, it does not require you to tell it when to turn off. That type of air valve was designed to work by itself independant of the ecu. It turns off based on the heat it sees on whatever you've bolted it to. when it gets up to temperature it throws a switch internally and turns off.
This is how they worked on all early bosch systems such as motronic. The fast air valve had nothing to do with the ecu. it is given power all the time and it turns itself on and off based on its temperature. try it.
that is why you are getting the situation you describe. ms is never going to have full control of this type of valve. If it were an on-off vacuum switch, temperature of the valve itself never matters, it is only based on water temp and ms can turn it on and off as it likes.. you are always going to have 2 situations where ms can't control the valve (ms cold, valve hot and ms hot, valve cold) as you basically have two on-off switches in your circuit.

Andrew i get what your saying, however on the Relay board not the ms it has a fidle point, when the ms gets out of warmup it flicks the power off it from the relayboard, this may be a bit different than running just ms and the idle valve. I wasn't aware it had an inbuilt switch we have another one running here with a ms and im sure its fine from the ecu.

yeah basically what i'm saying is if you want the ms to control the fast idle (relay board or not) you have the wrong type of valve. thats not to say you won't be able to get it to work how you have it, as you say by putting it somewhere hot so effectivly its always on and ms can then switch it on and off.
that type of valve is meant to work independent of any other control ie connect up + and - and put it somewhere that gets engine heat. it will then switch itself on and off based on the heat it sees. try it and see what happens..

Well so far so good, its on the road and driving, have to play with acell enrichments, the ve is basically sorted.
After a 45min long tune yesterday and drive around mountains at all different revs gears it was running fine. Called into pizza hut on way home and forgot to save the file DOH.

Well after a bit of tuning on Sat and some adjustments to the accelleration enrichments its all fine and running well. Nearly done about 200ks in last 2 days, trouble free, copped a bit of traffic today in and around the city managed fine apart from me sheetting bricks the whole time, but runs like a dream.
You can allmost feel the economy when you in 5th gear pulling about 40 -50k -60 and its doing about 1400rpm ( near where the carbs used to idle at) it sounds like your rolling with the clutch in its that quiet. The bonus is i guess you can still plant your foot and it will do the same as the carbs used to.

i got it off a lab rat in the US he made steam engines or something and this was a project him and some guys were working on so i got it fairly cheap and it was built.
need to talk to andrew about the spark i havent done it yet

I thought i'd give them a wear, because this other car wont be needing them for a while. I've never taken so long ot put in 2 taillights, those new housings are complete sheet, they have a 2" thick rubber seal and once on they hang out the back like a bumper bar, i have to mix and match old housings with seals.... Finally after a few dramas yesterday the struts are in, might be running a bit too much camber will get adjusted soon. Nice and soft at the front but firm and handles like a dream

Grant,

I've been looking at my intake temperatures and i've decided its time to copy your cold air intake. How/where did you mount the filter under the front? Is it in front of the radiator or did you manage to squeeze it in next to the lights somewhere? You talkled about a 90 degree joint a few pages back, is that joint on the front side of the hole to get the filer on a 'sideways' angle? Does the hole under the metal plate that you pulled off end up large enough? When i look at it on mine (with the plate still on) it looks too small to fit a pipe through. Do you have a pic of the filter under the nosecone?

ive been planing this for a while, since my car is away.

i want to run a tube of the TB thru the little hole in the front of the guard, maybe make it a lil larger and run the K&N flat filter which will tuck in there nicely (i think) and should get a sheet load of flow?

is that prity much what u done grant?

ok i'll try and remember without looking at it can take a pic if you need.

i have got a 90 degree rubber pipe just the elbow 2" i think it jams into the hole beside radiator.
get some 2: exhaust pipe or 2.5 whatever i used and fool about 1 " long piece so you can clamp the flexy hose to it, i also braised a fitting in the front one to run pcv/breather.

more flexy hose at front of 90 bend under nosecone. filter is mounted in middle of nosecone, i got a small filter from repco $29 and a 2" to whatever size adaptor to suit the pipe and filter. then some angle brackets that hook onto the filter adaptor.
watch what size filter you get as it wont fit through the gap.

as for water, i have driven in rain then pulled the hose off at tb and its dry, even if it gets wet will only make the air a bit cooler

Ahh ok so you drop the pipe size to get through the hole.. I'll have to measure it all when i get rid of the metal cover. I might enlarge the hole a bit as i want to keep the hose the same size from the throttle body to the filter so theres no restriction..

it should be the eexact same size as the tb.

i think what i found was the inside dia of the tb was the same size as the hole. the only thing is with the 2" tb you can clamp a hose down onto it. but trying to get the same sized pipe through a hole is a different story.

dont think you'll gain anything from cutting it bigger, plus you can always put it back.

Ah ok yeah, i was thinking 2 inches was small, but i forget my throttle butterfly is only 50mm.. I'll have to wait though as i'm changing to a larger tb (60mm) as my intake velocity is too high.

14"? How do you fit it with standard rad? I have a 2lt Cortina rad in shed which only differs in side straps and by my measurements I couldnt fit a 14" so thats why I went 13" on mine.

Its a bee's diick but are you going to have it over hang slightly from core?

Also Grant.........running a thermo fan? Hehe what's wrong with an engine fan? Are you going to trust an electronic device? [:x)] I see you already have the temp switch connected.

yeh i did a dodgey brothers measurement, said 14", thermo fan new $32 can't complain. i will make it fit modify brackets or make adaptor.

came with thermostat and mounting gear too

that switch was from my old fan, but stuffing up so the fuse is out it just sits there at the moment. plus old fan is only small just half the radiator.
this thing should cool it, does 2000rpm or something i turned it on holding onto it and nearly took off [(#)]

Yeh, i know i said that but all new cars are run like this, plus with no shroud its useless stopped for a long time, overheated in mcdonalds drivethru of all places, not the peak hour traffic oh no freaking mcdonalds 20m drive thru [:(!] might control it from megasquirt yet.

plus i want to shorten the alt belt to get it away from things

Good stuff Grant, I had to run mine on opposite side of radiator for clearance issues. Think yours may be a little thinner also.

Cruise, yeh but no. The new fan controller is stuffed and the old fan controller is stuffed so i dont like jumping in and out of car to turn the fan on and off for now [88]

yeh Rhys, my old one was a sqeeze on the other side, i had to grind some plastic off it to get to fit. this new one has 2 rounded edges and 2 squared edges so it tucks in nicley

Yeh i'll run it off the ecu, playing around with it at the moment, hopefully soon.
The car is brown allmost about an inch thick of dust on it has been at the back of the queue [(#)] it will be red and driven shortly.

new job shortly so twincam might not be too far away

Well after 5 months of not even hitting the road, it is re insured due to last mob canceling it [:(!] fixed again. And i have done 70km [:u] almost beats my total amount last year. Took it for a spin, still goes well, alltough its a bit slow after driving the 4L turbo. Washed the dust off it and polished, it lives again, now need to make it go faster [88]

I know what you mean about jumping in the RS after cruising in an XR6T, just doesn't seem quite fast enough, but you get that. I'm not sure if you have toyed with the idea of flash tuning your XR, you think it goes fast now, a custom tune will turn it into an animal, well worth it.

Yes i have only 6000k on the clock so far so i may hold out a bit longer, but yeah the RS is still fun to drive, nothing beats geting your stomach shaken out while sitting in 50 degree heats...

Need to look into warranty on the xr, tempted to do a redcliffe dyno upgrade on it, few $$$$ will see around 400kw. how much do the flash tunes get you? 260 270?

^seen a few blokes got the 300-400kw way with the xr's and they all regrt it. you simply cannot get the power down in em, they spin in as soon as boost hits

Yeh, still gotta love the RS, she pulls more looks that the XR6T.

Mine is pretty standard motor, with a typhoon snorkel, k & n filter and a custom tune. It went from 210 rwkw to 262 rwkw and it is now awesome, the problem is trying resist the temptation around the streets. Traction isn't too much of a issue, yeh it's easy to spin the wheels but you soon learn how to launch it properly and avoid wheelspin. There are many with up to the 400 rwkw mark and they have had to change injectors, intercoolers, plenum, wastegate mods and the list goes on, but you can get a decent hike in power with just a custom tune. There have been a good cars getting out of the reddicliffe shop. Check your warranty and decide if you are willing to risk it. I believe with BF's they can see when it was last flashed whereas the ba's they can't.
