hey guys, took the car to wsid last night to see how it would go.

had a lot of problems with the battery going flat :(

first pass easy shifts, around 5k run 11.8, car was ordinary in the top end only run 115mph (possibly spark issues with low alt output).

second pass, jetted up the rear a few jet sizes, another 11.8 or so, no different mph.

decided to wind a little more boost into it to see if that would help.

3rd run, soft of the line, end of first /2nd gear felt a lot stronger and spun a lot, 3rd gear was flat strap at 7000rpm well before the line(my redline was supposed to be 6000) and then "bang" the car lost all power, and fell on its face, it blew the gasket between the hat and the carb, and popped the piping from the turbo to carb.

had to get the guy at the end of the track to jump start me, as it was flooded with raw fuel pouring from the back)

finally got back to the pits, and the car had run 10.9 @113mph and was then told not to come back till the car was andra teched :(

run ended up as this,

60' 1.7
660' 7.002 @ 104mph
1/4 10.9 @ 113mph (turbo piping popped off)

so a few more changes will need to be made, cage etc etc, then a change in diff ratio to allow the car to run more around the 135+ mph.

so it was a pretty ordinary night, but the old clevo held together for the drive there, boost and 7000rpm and the drive home :)

Into the 10s with a few issues. Have you got a time you would like to run?

yeah it had some teething issues :)

the motor has only around 200kms on it, and the tune is still far from perfect, but it desperatly needs a diff ratio change to allow some mph at lower rpm, and a bigger alternator to keep the battery charged.

as for times, i expect to run mid / low 10's @ 130-135mph with pump fuel with the current setup, (it must have been close or over 130+mph before the hose came off)

more then that it will need a probably need a transbrake, bigger stall, auto rebuilt shift kit, maybe a cam change, water injection or run it on c16/meth, and of course more boost would help.

That is one very cool escort, do you drive it on the street much ?

What sort of boost are you running ? obviously not very much ?

Cheers,
Damion.

Well done Johnopaul, I bet you can't wait to better that time.
Please, keep us updated, some locals may like to see it in person.

Not bad at all John. What is the plan with this car. Are you more interested now in enjoying it and building it into a monster then selling it?

Cheers

hey guys thanks :)

theres a few issues with sealing the tophat to carb at the moment so boost is a bit of a prob, i had to wind boost up over 12psi on the 3rd pass, but it was really laggy due to the major leaks.

the car will run a lot quicker at this boost level once ive ironed out the issues.

hope to be back to wsid in a couple of weeks max :)

mr mk2 - yeah ill keep it a little longer, although i am running short of $.

wsid 12/11/08 update:

car has run a little quicker, run a best of

60' 1.780
660' 6.8@108mph
1/4 10.4@133.75mph

60' was really soft, as the current torque converter wont allow me to build boost on the footbrake (no transbrake) also the converter has a lot of slip near full rpm, and the box shifts very slow from 2-3rd gear.

looks like the diff ratio chnage from 4.11's to 3.25's helped :)

wow, top effort. This car is going to be seriously quick when you iron everything out !

Thats motoring at the top of the track...there's 9's in there somewhere[:p]

thanks guys :)

i was hoping it would have run a bit more mph, but it looks as though the converter or box was slipping to much.

Convert the C4 with a full Manual kit.
The gear changes will be lightening fast even when up high in the rev's.

Well done running a 10.4 1/4 mile with 3.25 diff gears.WOW!

You don't want the tyre's to loose traction past half track with highway gearing, you will be facing the way you came if your not careful.
Cars start to fly at 120mph+
The 4.11 gears with taller tyres will be safer.
Are you reaching top speed before the 1/4 mile finish line?
You should be near flat out before the finish if you want to run faster times.
MPH should be the last thing to worry about with a Boosted V8.

Great stuff johnopaul.

hey maxrs,

thanks for the reply,

i was going to go 28's, but i couldnt fit larger then 26'' tyres on without some major mods :( so i went the 3.25's, mainly to give it some nice crusing ability :)

from my gearing and tyre size, i should have been going a fair bit quicker then the mph i was, iam not 100% sure but rpm i think was above 6500, which means the converter or gearbox is slipping a LOT in the top end.

so a full manual, will shift a lot quicker? that sounds like what i need, as the shift was bloody slow.

also need to make some boost on the line, as it leaves soft.

They are getting those times in the UK with Cossie power, not a V8. Even NA Escorts are down to 12's!

stuart, thanks for the info, i was unaware of that.

with a fully built 400+ci motor, stroker crank, rods, alloy heads, bigger turbo, w2a cooler, transbrake, cam to suit, blah blah blah, c16 and 30plus psi, people are making way way over 1200hp.

dont forget mine is a street car, pump fuel, street radials, exhaust, airfilter, engineered and rego'd, owner built, tuned etc, driven to and from the track.

btw i like cosworths :)

Can they do it for more than a day? before they blow up or need attention.

There is a big difference between a 11 second 1/4 mile car and a 10 second weapon.
9's will shut the Four bangers up

i actually like a lot of motors, 4's, 6's, 8's and rotarys,

this is the first v8 ive owned or driven.[:I] but i dont worry about people running 10's in the uk, i remember when Brian munro was running nines around 1996.

as for my car, with some more passes iam sure the car will go faster, as ive only had two street meets in the car.

it has not been dyno'd etc, as its only street tuned by me, so theres a fair bit left in it when i get some more time to fine tune and play with the carby.

I just did some calcs[:p] With your ratio's your mph at 6500rpm in top should be around 150mph
2008/11/14 20:40:00
johnopaul
hey phil,

yeah with a manual the gearing would allow 150mph, with the auto i thought the slip would make it more around 140 to 145mph at around 6500rpm -6700rpm, depending on how good a converter is.

as i only had one full pass with the new gearing, i didn't quite get the exact rpm as i crossed the line,

but with a converter suited to na motor about half the hp and torque i would expect a huge amount of slip (the converter is unknown,so i doubt its matched.)
its possible the rpm was less, i could have been past the line.

The speedo is the last thing on your mind when crossing the line at that speed!![:p]

i was supposed to watch the AFR meter, boost guage, tacho and speedo

but iam not 100% sure what any of them where.

Good work John, congrates on the times, Nines are just a knock on the door.

Let me know when you hit WSID again and i'll be there, if you have an E-Boost2 apparently i'm the only bloke around that knows how to tune these

prob wont be back till next year :(

iam only running a simple boost controller, adjustable reg bleeding air to the top of the gate.

Johnopaul, full marks on the V8. I know there is alot of money needed to get that 1/10 of a second. Good luck with the chase for 9's!
