My Mk1 RS2000 replica-Update!!

It has been a long time coming, but I have finally got my MK1 RS2000 replica back from the panel shop, so I thought it was about time I posted some piccys up. The car is fitted with a Mazda/Ford 1.8 DOHC engine on twin 45 webers and extractors. The engine is completely standard at the moment, but a new one is on the way for a full season of hillclimbing next year.

Will post some interior piccys soon, basically has full RS seats and steering wheel (from mk2), and twink dash and instrument cluster etc. I haven't refitted the cage yet, planning on doing that on my xmas days off. Engine bay hasnt been painted yet, it will be getting done when I do the engine change.

Think you can still get them new from performance?? not sure. They are 15x7 with offset at 8P. I run 205/50/15 tyres, rear guards are folded and inner guard pumped out, twink arches on the front and the clearance is fine,

excellent ,oh your going to get alot of questions (at least from me)
1stly about the water/cooling system. What have you used there it looks like youve gone in to the front of the head from the photos,Im not familiar with the BP cooling system.
And are you using a MX5 box or escort with adapter?

How did you go about getting rid of the dizzy out the back of the head?

Thanks, plans for the future are to refit the roll cage and run the Vic hillclimb series next year, and also a few club sprints and car shows etc. As I stated earlier, the engine is stock standard, but I am building a new one for it (there is a posting under engine conversions, I will be updating it shortly on the progress),

Ok, my engine is out of a KH Laser (FWD). The engines are basically the same for FWD and RWD, there are some slight differences. Try and get the engine with the later crankshaft (it has a bigger snout) as these engines have a nasty habit of flogging out the keyway on the front of the crankshaft. The cooling system was pretty straight forward, basically removing the thermostat housing and blanking it off at the rear, then there is a welsh plug at the front to knock out, fit the MX5 thermostat lower housing (the holes are already in the head) and a mazda E2000 top housing (need to slot the holes), then it takes the standard 2ltr escort top hose. Found a hose to go from the rear heater fitting on the engine straight to the heater core, and then put a fitting into the original waterpump and ran it to the other side on the heater core. Bottom hose is an off the shelf corolla item, cut one end and fitted it straight on, standard 2ltr escort radiator.

The distributer was a little more involved. Basically it is a Telstar Bosch unit (you will notice it now comes out at a right angle). I made the telstar housing fit the BP head, then machined the end off the telstar camshaft and interference fitted it to the BP camshaft (spot welded just to make sure!) and basically angled everything to suit the bubble in the firewall. Was time consuming, but works well.

The car runs the standard Escort gearbox, I made a bellhousing to suit. The gearbox now sits around 1-1.5" further forward(the engine is lots shorter than a pinto, so its not an issue)but it will make the type 9 conversion easier later on, as the hole is in the right spot now!

Good on you mate sounds like a great conversion,I wanted to do this conversion years ago,(did it in a KB laser but not to an escort)just never got around to it with any of my Escorts,But now its time to decide weather or not to put an injected pinto back in my RS mk2 or do a conversion with the zetec or the efi BP1800 turbo.Only real issue I could see would be the throttle body facing the firewall, which could just be a cut and shut to the new front on the engine..
then knock up some engine mounts,.........MMMMMM food for thought, thanks for the info,I may call on your knowledge in the future.

Warren who built up the cams and what buckets are you going to use
Also why did you bother getting the camm wheels as you don't need them with a Zetec as they don't have a key way

Hi Danny, Clive Cams in Melbourne did the cams for me, he has been doing my work for 17 years. I am using solid buckets and shims from the later model mazda engine, they are a direct fit. The engine is not a zetec, it is a BP mazda,

Yeah you're right you can slap me upside the head at Bathurst in November
With the cams be prepared for them to pull chunks of the build up out after a while as the material is too dense to run on those steel buckets. If you want them to live have the buckets hard chromed on the faces to improve their ability to trap oil as the standard finish will allow the cam to literally squeeze the oil out and heat will be enough for it to pull pieces of the stellite build up out

Hehe , yes will make a point of slapping you with a "zetec" badge!! lol. All things going to plan I'll have the car running at Bathurst this year. Will be my first at the hill, and my first Aust championship since 1997 [:u].

I have run camshafts with built up lobes in the past (from Clive only, I wont use other grinders) with a 0% failure rate, even on the most radical profiles in all sorts of engines over long periods of time (eg: the one I had done for my laser was done 6 years ago, and its still fine now), so I am confident that these will be fine. I take it that you meant to get the shims hard chrome plated, not the bucket?? I have access to heaps of different brands and materials of shims through work, so I will make a point of getting the right material and finish right from the start. I have the solid buckets, but I haven't ordered the shims as yet, as I need to dummy assemble the head to get the sizes close before I order them.

I probably wont be at SFS as Geoff isn't coming down at the moment as he has a lot on his plate with the CNC's but as far as S.R. goes I don't know but I can find out
What did you run in 97 as I was there at Mt Leura and came third or something to the VW's (was getting a rooster tail of rubber out of turn 2) because I had a fuel pump fail on Friday morning and had to drive back to Melbourne to get a spare so I got no dry practice and it kept on raining so I got left behind. That and I had Phil Morriss wanting to deck me in the line up after the finish line

I ran the car shown here (this topic) in Touring Cars under 2ltr. Then it was owned by a mates Dad. It was basically a standard 2ltr road car with half decent suspension, so 4 weeks before the Australia Champs me and my mate fitted some slicks (s/h formula 2) and decided we needed some more horsepower, so I dragged my old road going Pinto out of the shed (WR30 cam, big valve head, 45's etc etc.) re-ringed and bearinged it, recoed and freshened the head and bolted it into the car. There was a club round about 2 weeks before the Aust., so we ran it at that, won our class, but broke a top ring. Engine out again, fixed the problem and stuck it back together about a week before the event. Paul ran it on the Thursday with no hiccups, and I ran it on the Friday. We had double entered the car and it ran absolutely faultless for the whole weekend, won our class and set a record for the class (it still stands). It also did a couple of Victorian rounds after that and was pretty successfull. I remember your car there, its on the video I have. Here's some piccys of the car in 1997,

Hi All,

Well I had the first outing in the car on the 23rd and 24th of Feb, the VHC round number 2. It was the cars first outing in about 8 years, first one in current format also. After finishing it in the early hours on the Friday night, and basically driving straight to the event, I finished 3rd in class, missing out on 2nd spot by 0.02sec . Overall pretty happy with the result, still on the standard engine, and very basic suspension package.

Hi All,

Thought I'd give a quick update on the progress.

I have been running in the Victorian Hillclimb championship series. I missed the first round, but so far the car has finished 3rd, 5th and two 2nd's in class. Before the last round I made some front suspension mods to the car (more neg and more caster) which was a big improvement. I intend to fit some different rear leaves and new shocks before the next round also.

The new engine has been on hold, as I am waiting for some vernier cam gears to arrive from the States, they are currently on backorder over there. I have been running the engine as is (basically standard apart from extractors and webers). For the interim I had some mild camshafts made up, and tidy'd up a cyl head, upped the compression slightly and they were fitted to the car this week. It has been a great improvement, car gets re-dyno'd next week with the new bits, but it feels great and has made a definate improvement for the better. This mod will do me until the good engine is finished.

The next round is in 4 weeks, will post some piccies when I get a little more time,

Cheers

Hi All,

Well another quick update....!

Been down and spent over an hour on the dyno tonight, along with Simon's Laser (refer to his TX3 post for his results). Results were much better than expected.

When I first fitted the engine it made 77kw at the wheels, bog stock standard, fitted with extractors and 45mm webers. It has been like this up until last week.

Basically I had some mild cams ground, and tidy'd the cyl head up (literally dismantling it, and running a flap wheel under the valves and making the shape slightly better, took about an hour, and fitted some new valve stem seals) and also machined .020" off the surface to up the compression a bit.

It felt good right from the start without a tune. After trying a few combo's in the webers, and playing with the timing, we ended up with 2mm larger chokes in the webers, and altered the air correction jets also, as well as altering the ignition timing settings it made just over 97kw at the wheels, with a noticable torque increase also. Very happy for such a little mod.

Can't wait to have the good motor done now after seeing these results, lots of potential.

Cheers

Hey Woz,

Great job. Heard all about it from Simon the other night. What rpm did you make peak power and what was the torque figure? After what we discussed the other week at Simon's place I think I'll be a go with it also. I've got to try and keep the TX3 up with you guys on the track as much as possible- so long as I don't break something this weekend at winton!!!

Again mate, Well done. And well done to Simon who got respectable results from his TX3 also. Keep us informed on your progress with the cars guys.

Will have to check the dyno readings again, but I'm pretty sure peak power was around 7-7200rpm. Torque figures will be at the wheels, but I will look at the dyno figures again and let you know the improvement and rpm locations compared to standard.

Thanks,

I have now added a leaf to the rear suspension, and reset them 10-12mm lower, and also deleted the rear sway bar. I also fitted some different shock absorbers. Car is feeling better, but next outing on the race track will soon confirm that!!. I also noted when I had the rear suspension out that my car has Mk2 leafs in the rear.

SHEPPARTON VHC ROUND (FRONT SUSPENSION CHANGED)

PHILLIP ISLAND VHC

Raced the car at the Broadford hillclimb on the weekend, finished 4th in class. Car was great. Driver, not so great. I had been feeling ill all weekend, and by the time I got my act together it poored with rain, leaving only 2 dry official runs. Not to worry, very happy with the suspension changes. Both the front and the rear done now,

Cheers

The Broadford hillclimb is actually on the motorcycle track at the complex.

By "ball park figures" what do you mean?? If you mean, what should you be paying for a s/h engine, then you should be able to pick up a front wheel drive one in good condition for $150 upwards. Have a good hunt around the wrecking yards.

Finally got my act together and finished the rear suspension on the car. I have fitted new rear leaf springs, and also fitted a watts linkage with adjustable roll centre. Waiting for the shocks to turn up, but so far it has made a dramatic improvement to the car, can't wait to get it back on the track!.

This is my first attempt at a watts link rear, I used falcon bits, just shortened the arms up. Will probably rose joint it later on, but it has superpro bushes at the moment.

Looks good Woz,its good to see a watts link designed correctly[;^)] I used the Falcon crank as well with rose jointed bars...the roll centre improvement is very noticeable

Cheers Phil. I have had the car out this arvo playing with the roll centre, it's amazing how much difference it makes to the car, very noticable. Will be good to muck around with it at the track, looking forward to it!
