That car is what I dream of one day owning!! Congrats, looks bloody beautiful!! [:u]
Would love to see it in the flesh. What is next on the mod plan??
Not that I could pick one thing that I would do it!!

Well to get this far has taken 11 years and 6 Escorts. Starting with a 79 1.6L GL on my P's and then a heap of evolutions including, 2x N/A Cossies before building this. So it took a while.
Even in the 5 years of owning this car it has had many stages...

The future......

This year: New LSD.
Expected Result: Improved ET at WSID and also track times.

Next Year: GT3076R?!? and associated mods.
Expected Result: More power, boost controlled properly and 30psi. Even larger grin.

I'm sure you feel it has all been worth it now. You are certainly reaping the benifits of all that hard work! How many times were you "going to sell the bas#@#$ and never look at one again!??"

I'm off to my newsagent. It definatly has that tough look. I really like the chrome look the motor has. The wheels suit it well to. Do you traction problems [88] 242kw at the wheels [:0]

Yeah, it only has traction problems in 1st, 2nd & 3rd with Kuhmo Ecsta semi slicks on

You know that if you put your foot down 1/2 to 3/4 it will accelerate pretty damn hard and not turn the tyres, but that is not as much fun I suppose. In truth I just change early in most cases whilst getting about and then in higher gears give it the pedal to the metal for overtaking etc...Better to have the option to go hard, even if it not needed most of the time, at least there is the choice. Sorry that was a diplomatic load of waffle.[88]
Phil has been assisting me in spending my money[:-(] with new accessories on the table now...[%]

It would be so funny watching you race on the street. You have the power their but slight traction problems. I have seen BA GT's putting out 220kw at the wheels but in an escort.. whoe waa [:u]

If you ever have a video of your car i would like to see it

...More fun is had on the track. I have only been once with this engine and cannot wait to get back there.

Congratulations Mark, firstly on building such a wicked car & secondly for the magazine article. Have just read the article in "Fast Fours". Well deserved! It's good to see that the original engine from my cossie has found a good home. Enjoy! Cheers Matt

Hi Matt - You can see why I could not give the engine up.[;^)] Thanks for being positive...Fantastic that you found this site. So how is the Cossie? Brilliant is all I can imagine as Bob kept his car in perfect condition as I believe you would too. Look out for the imminent upgrade to GT30 turbo and some extra horses. You should post some piccies of your car on here too

I am still running the standard engine with 263.5kW atw from a GT30/76R and other proper ancillaries such as Autronic SMC and MSD Blaster Coils...Now look out for new mods that will let the turbo work for once in its life (porting, cams and the like).....The custom made elastomeric engine damper and strut assists in keeping the engine in the bay as it was trying to jump out using the standard escort mounts alone (which still exist). Great for reducing vibration...
A dream to drive, many grins[(#)][88]
263kW is produced at 24psi all day every day...............
sorry the dyno sheet shows an old tune with higher boost. The point is that the engine makes the same power with less boost, it is mass flow that affects the power.....

Mark
I went back to Yavuz at Uni Group for a health check, we made 263kW atw at 24psi.........Nice to know nearly 6 months later it is performing as expected......

That damper is a neat bit of gear Mark.

What sort of Cams are you looking at ? Are there any plans to improve on the existing manifolds ?

Cheers,
Damion.

There is not much room to move with cams as my pistons are the standard item and the more agressive cams must be combined with scalloped pistons. I don't want to pull the engine down to do this until it needs a freshen up...
There is no rush to change inlet and exhaust manifolds yet. I want to do some port work first, the car is running well right now so I will drive it for for a while and then look at taking the head off to have some work done.

260+ rwkws from a totally stock engine on 24psi!!! now thats what im talking about!!
are you going to spec some custom cams or just use a set of BD's???? 10/14/15/16???

Undecided with cams, but have limited options unless I change the pistons, so there is no rush.

Damn straight.
It doesnt matter how long my car spends off the road..... how much money goes into it..... Or how much stress it causes..... that first push on the throttle and that thrust back into the seat makes it all worth it. EVERY TIME!

any updates to your car yet?
I see the zoom feature ......congrats btw.
Just wondering if you have got any further. You were planing top turn the boost up to 30.

..We did, more power earlier; no real improvement for the top end. We know exactly why and it does not matter; today. The vehicle performs very well each and every time it is started and driven.. Tinkerng is something that will come later...

well done mark, looks great! It makes me more anxious to be able to turn the key on mine, but more tinkering is required. Stock cams are not at all bad in these things as your probably aware, theyed be the last thing to change, that port and manifold prep work is the way to go. The bifurifaction ports stock come no where near meeting the surface area of the trumpets. What exhaust manifold are you running on the motor?

Forgot to mention, that torque curve is very flat, thats really good, means it's breathing well all the way through with your boost level. the porting would have to matched up with a different turbo compressor, but i'm just repeating stuff you'd already know. Once again, love the car!!

I have not done any port work, but will one day to get it breathing better...I use the Escort 4x4 exhaust manifold...

...That is boost on the dyno sheet. I have much better dyno sheets (same 263kW give or take 2 kW, very consistent, but we make it at 24psi, more boost means power early)...The torque is the differentation of the power/RPM plot, ie Area under the curve. From this the torque curve cannot possibly be flat based ont the power curve, it would mean that the cylinder pressure would have to continually increase. The torqure curve peaks about 5000RPM. Quite interesting.

Sorry, I meant that the torque curve is flat once the motor is at boost, so from the 5000 to 8000 band the torque is fairly flat, and I'm assuming that boost stays at a pretty consistent 24psi through this range, if it was dead flat than the hp curve would be linear. If the breathing was becoming an issue at this power level, the torque (and by function horsepower)would drop at a pretty linear rate, similiar to the common turbo torque curve where it climbs as the motor comes on boost, peaks, then starts heading back down in a fairly straight line. I'm assuming that when you wound it up to 30psi and you said that the power increase wasn't massive, the compressor would be running of it's effic. island and breathing would start becoming a problem. When you ran it at 30 did the midrange power increase more than the peak HP figure increased, eg 40 hp gain at 5000rpm 20 hp gain at 7500rpm just to make up some numbers.

...As above stated, 30 psi meant more power mid range, no real affect for peak power...The latest tune has full boost by 4300RPM, peak power is similar...

Hey Mark, just looking through your article in Zoom, very nice! Question, your battery in the boot, obviously a sealed battery, you didn't have any engineering issues with this because it's not in a sealed container. I thought it might be the case that a sealed battery doesn't need to be in a container, but I have not gotton a confirmation on this yet?
2010/01/24 12:39:54
Mickas
VE commodores have sort of sealed battery with a vent to atmo.
And no battery box.
Should be fine then eh.
2010/01/24 16:26:00
Phil
There are sealed wet lead acid batteries available with a little drain tube from the top of the battery that is usually a clear pvc tube. If the tube is vented to atmosphere you can run the battery in the cabin or boot with no box. The best type of battery to run without a box is the absorbed glass mat type(like Odyssey, Deka and Optima) which is a totally sealed design. These can go anywhere and dont require a vent
