MK1 project (twin cam replicar)

Hi,I am 6 months into a build of what I hope will be a replacement of a 1600 GT I bought new in 1973. I have finished all rust repairs (body was almost rust free) and have started on the running gear. I have trial fitted a 1600cc injected MX5 motor (will fit laser cam cover) and gearbox and the fit is quite good. I have modified the engine mounts and gearbox to fit the body so that they sit on the std crossmembers in the original position. I have made my own pedal box and will fit rear discs. I have coil over kits for the front and adjustable top mounts.

Hi Gerald. Nice little project there. I like the brake set up with the booster and dual circuit master cylinder incorporated into the peddle box. Should be a nice little goer with the engine and gearbox combination. Perhaps you could consider writing an article about the modifications you've made.

Love your pedal box mate!! Also planning on the TC instrument cluster too I see. How did the mazda motor fit sump wise if you dont mind?

I fitted an MX-5 engine to my MK1 some 7 years ago. The sump will need to be modified to clear the crossmember. They have an alloy sump (or at least mine did) which took some time to get sorted. I ended up selling the engine to Clive with the 440 and he fitted it up. IF you hvae a look around you may be able to find some photos of it.

P.S. You can drop the steering rack a little which will help but may effect the bump steer and things like that.

Hi, I have had the engine and 5 speed in and have no clearance probs. I have mounted the cam angle sensor at the front and will belt drive it so that the motor can go back to the firewall, and have no sump clearance issues, have had to make new trans tunnel top to clear the trans, and have modified trans to sit on std escort rear mount in original position, so all looks well at the moment

Ah that would be the difference then, I was still running the CAS at the back of the head and left the coil packs there as well so I had to sit the engine forward a little bit.

Looks good, great conversion, and plenty of goodies available for the engine. I have a Mk1 RS2000 replica fitted with the 1.8 DOHC Mazda engine also (out of KH TX3 Laser). I used all mx5 stuff for the conversion (sump, pickup, extractors etc). My car is logged as an Improved production car which meant minimal body modification. I used the standard escort gearbox and manufactured my own bell housing. I modified a Telstar right angle drive distributer and fitted it to the rear of the engine (regraphed to suit) and it runs twin 45mm webers (will run efi throttle bodies when money is better!). I did modify the sump to fit also, but my engine probably sits a little further forward than yours because of the distributer. The engine is bog stock standard at the moment, makes 77kw at the wheels, but I have another at work under construction (big valve ported head, 1890cc, cosworth L1 solid cams, 10.8 comp). Will put up some piccys soon, but love your project, looks good,
