Racin Jason's Mk 1 - Up for sale! details on pg 5!

Hi Guys,

After posting my concept for a possible Mk 1 I was looking at...and after getting such a good response....as mentioned in my other thread, I have acquired a new project!

I have sold my soul to the Devil and gone away from my beloved Cortina's....and now am the proud owner of a 1970 Baby/powder Blue/Tan interior Mk 1 Escort 2 door 'Super'. The Super as I know it is very rare in Australia, and has a few slight differences to the normal 1300XL's we are all used to seeing.

Anyway.....this is a full rebuild job, but it's straight...it's complete, it's virtually rust free and has everything I need to start my project from. Here's what I to create;

Download Attachment: Blue Mexican.jpg
31.28 KB

Here's how I'm going to achieve this;

The Mk 1 is baby blue in colour, with the light tan interior. It will need a full body resto, as there is some rust...but it is very minor on the grand scheme of things. Small amount in the heater box, small amount infrontof the rear arches and some minor stuff around the rear of the passenger strut top. The right front guard is dented and rusted...so it's going to be replaced.

The largest rust area is the drivers 'A' pillar support, and this will need to be completely replaced...oh yay I say in a sarcastic manner[V]

I will cut out the rust...respray it original baby/powder blue, add black Mexico decals (Blue Mk 1's usually have white decals - but I think they look ghey). I have a repro front spoiler on order, and will get the guards rolled like never before...and possibly achieve a 5mm flare at the same time.

I have a set of new 15x6 Superlites with good tyres that will go on, and I will add Mk 2 Escort front struts(new inserts and new lowered coils), rack and bigger Mk 2 brakes.....as well as Nolathane bushes + new pads etc.

I have a 1600 GT Spec engine I need to get from Lucas that will bolt straight in...after a quick spray can rebuild...my bro agood second hand sports exhaust with extractors.....and I have a good 3.7 diff waiting for a home too.

Inside I will fit new carpet with underlay, new rubber kit - cheap from Rare Spares these days ([;^)]if you know the CEO!) - and then refit the very good condition tan interior. I have sourced a pair of Recaro's from an Alfa, but they might not make it in as the original seats look sweet, but I will need to have the rear seat trimmed to match.

I have a wooden sports Nardi steering wheel and old 70's wooden gear knob that I will strip and revarnish...and a cheap CD player and speakers too. The hood lining will be dyed tan in colour...and the carpets will be dark brown as well - to make the whole thing match. I will spray the interior metal the same as the exterior...and use some cool school book contact in wood grain I have found to re-do the dash/instrument cluster wood finish. Oh and I have a Autometer Monster Tach that might go in if it dosen't look too boy racer.

Other than that....as you can see I have most things covered...and have allocated this winter to get a majority of the work done...as I have set myself a goal of debuting the car at All Ford Day next year!

When I'm motivated.....I get things done very quickly - that and my budget of $2500 is already allocated from old Wifey...so I am good to go!

So that's the plan.....now here's the car as it stands right now in Hackam SA......

Whoops how did that picture of the new Superlite 15x10 get in here[;^)]

Ok so that's the car...that's the plan. I have always named my cars, as I like to think they each have a certain personality to them. This car is a cheeky Mexican...so Speedy Gonzales was a natural choice...Speedy G for easier rego options!

Fingers crossed the build goes to plan. I collect the car within two weeks...let the fun begin!

Thanks guys......but those aren't the rims for this car....they are secret spy shots of the soon to be released 15x10 Superlites.

There are two options for getting 10's under the bum of a standard wheel tub Mk 1 Escort;

1 - Slim

2 - None

Having said that I have already placed my order for the 16x10's for the Cortina..stay tuned on that one[;^)]

Escort arrives in 1.4 weeks! Me very happy boy![^][^][^][^][^][^][^][^][^][^]

Hi jason. The "mexican" style is one of my favourites. I too have a 1300 "super" in the shed awaiting similar rebuild. Just how rare are the "supers". If you can build it into that car in the pic for 2500 you must be a genius. Oh i get it thats just the story for wifey.[;^)] Anyway best of luck with it and how about doing a project on it with pics for us? I know, we dont want much aye?[^]
2007/04/04 21:52:07
racin jason
Yeah sounds like I'm saying it for the wifey....but I'm not!

I am seriously going to have a crack at building this car for $2500....less the initial purchase price of course. The following gives you an idea of the extent of planning I have done in the last week;

Initial purchase price = $400

Where the costs are;

1600 Gt spec Engine, clutch and 4 speed = $350
15x6 Superlites and tyres = $500
New carpet and underlay = $170
Mexico stripe kit = $150
King springs and Monroe inserts front = $200
Monroe shocks and lowering blocks for rear = $140
Body work (rust sections) = $100
Paint prep (primer and bogging = $200
Paint = $250
Paint labour = $500

Sub-total = $2560

What I have scammed/accumulated for free

Good 2L 3.7 diff centre
2L Escort Mk 2 front end including rack, struts, big brakes and swaybar
Mint Mk 1 Escort Super interior
Wooden Nardi Steering wheel and matching gearknob
Full front Nolathane suspension bushes
Full Rare Spares rubber kit to suit Mk 1 Escort - Don't ask...all will be revealed later[;^)]
New extractors and sports exhaust
Funky 'drop' peep rear vision mirrors

There are other smaller expenses such as engine paint, electrical tape etc....so I think if I was to be 100% realistic....I think $3000 will be the rough ball park figure once the car is built. Having said that...there are things like the existing 1300 engine and other items that can be sold to reduce the investment of the build......either way, it will be cheap and done to the highest standard.

I know this sounds like a contradiction, but as a qualified mechanic, and an avid Classic Ford enthusiast with a keen eye for 'looks right and what looks ghey'....and after already building a Mexico clone 3 years ago during a visit back to Australia (I built it in 3 weeks!)....I am confident of building this one right.

Either way....I am in for a challenge, and will document the build here in this thread...as well as in the Classic Ford UK magazine. Wish me luck....I'm going in![:x)]

RJ

P.S. - I will post pics of the Green Mexico replica I built in 3 weeks as soon as I can get access to a scanner.

10/04/2007 - UPDATE!

Engine, flywheel, clutch, gearbox, shifter, GT intake manifold and GT carb purchased from Lucas!

Car arrives possibly later this week! Have been looking for a colour combination for the engine...and have two options;

1 - Traditional = Blue block and head, satin black rocker cover and aircleaner, silver waterpump and intake manifold, black hoses

2 - Hotrod = Bright red block, head, rocker cover, aircleaner, waterpump, silver intake manifold, black hoses

Option two is my favorite at the moment as it's sort of retro techno style that keeps the under bonnet appearance 'different' and monochrome....like the rest of the car! It will also contrast well with the baby blue paint and give the perky engine a real personality when the bonnet is lifted.

More updates as they happen.

Ill vote for traditional, blue black and silver. Also just a mix of black and silver would look sharp.

Yes progress has been made!

I have a single car garage...as you all will see soon....this is where Speedy G will be created. I have a Mk 1 Cortina living in there right now and a dirty great Dodge truck under the carport where the Mk 1 Cortina will go when Speedy G arrives.

I have sold the truck and it leaves on Friday....so I'm hoping the Escort will arrive next week...and then the fun begins.

Pics up very soon!

Yeah I know it's a little confusing....but this should explain it -

1 - Found car = COMPLETED

2 - Created concept for build up = COMPLETED

3 - Gather budget = COMPLETED

4 - Buy Rims, Engine, Gearbox = COMPLETED

5 - Make room at home for Speedy G = Nearly there!

6 - Post more pics of car in present state = Nearly there!

Hope this helps. I am picking up the engine and gearbox tonight, so pics of that will be up tomorrow!

I have my canvas.....FINALLY!

Here's how I pulled it from the shed. It was dry stored for 5 years, and originally came from VIC. Not running, but I intend to get the engine going before I progress....anyway enough chit chat...here's the pics;

Good news is that my brother was 'clearing his shed' and loaded the car with all manner of goodies. I also scored that Convertible I was going to do, and it has a few parts I can rob before selling ownwards. All up the budget is looking better with more stuff to sell on eBay.....Oh I am happy as pig in shyte!

Now to start the build.....but first I need to clean, and sell the Mk 2 Convert.

Man I am stoked[^]

The build has begun!

Here's the car in it's new home;

I unloaded everything, and sorted out what will be sold on eBay and what will be saved. Then I sat down infront of the Mk 1 and closed my eyes and pictured it finished.......then I got up and began creating.

First up I decided as costs were to be kept to a minimum that the Diff, and front end/brakes would be retained. I tried to start the engine...but it was a no go. So I abandoned the idea of getting it running, and started to fix stuff up.

I pulled the old skinny 13in rims off and stuck on a set of Lotus steels to keep my spirits up, and had a look at the rear brakes. They looked Ok, so I gave them a quick blow off, checked the wheel cylinders....it all looked fine!

Download Attachment: Open brake small.jpg

I put the drum cover back on, and painted it satin black - and admiried my first 'work' on the car.

Next up I stripped out the boot, including the fuel tank;

Look closely and you can see my black marker pen cirlces around the area's that need welding/filling or bog work. So that's it for now - all that took 2 hours....but left a smile for a week. Next up I strip the interior and front end.

Cheers

MORE WORK COMPLETED! Someone somewhere must be smiling upon me to allow so spare time for more stripping action to occur. I now have some very small jobs to finish before the car is stripped enough to begin the body work for painting!

The windows come out soon, and the hoodlining is also heading for the bin. I have stripped the front and rear of the car now, and started to strip the engine bay - including the wiring loom (to be replaced with a Mk 2 Escort system).

I have almost cleaned the interior out completely as well. As per usual I have catalouged everything, and systematically documented all the parts that have come off the car. This way the re-fit is easy. Enjoy the pics;

Whoa much water under the bridge since the last post!

I moved house, moved Speedy and have developed a few new plans. The paintwork will now be pseudo-ratrod style and instead of high gloss finish, I'm going for a matt/satin light blue finish.

My Mexico stripes will be the same Matt/satin finish, and I have a few period decals for that added racey touch. Inside the plan is still the same, but I did think about Chocolate brown Recaro's, no carpet and alloy door trims there for a while...but that's now gone.

I will keep the cost down with a 'Japanese' sourced retrim job...stay tuned - it will be cheap, effective and tie in well with the light tan colour scheme.

I am also going to run no centre console and get a long 'NASCAR' style shift made up.

Here's a pic of Speedy in his new drive way on the 15inch superlites.

Download Attachment: Speedy G stripped nude.jpg

I have killrusted a lot of the problem area's, prepped the window sills and started minor bog work. Next stop is body prep....and hopefully buffed biceps from sanding!

Cheers

Holy crap......I have done more! Started body work, and soon found out the car is better than I expected - well straighter and with less rust than expected.

MORE WORK COMPLETED!

I have recently changed jobs....and I am in the process of sourcing a NC Fairlaine....more on that soon...needless to say Speedy G needs to get finished sooner rather than later to make way for the Fairlane.

The exterior will stay the sam as planned, however the interior will get a street racer make over rather than a full retrim as originally planned. Two Recaro's, alloy door trims, no rear seat and no hoodling....just pure driving attitude inside.

This should cut down my build time considerably, and reduce the investment as well - at the same time it will turn out quite cool.

Body wise I am progressing. The rear of the car is basically in putty/primer and I am getting there with the rest as well. It's looking good race fans....more pics coming soon!

RJ

P.S. - My 2 1/2 year old boy can say the following words;

....More hard work completed! New job has allowed me time to get work done! Rear is in primer/putty, right rear is in primer/putty...and I am slowly moving around the car. The thing is starting to look good!

The roof was booted in at some stage, so there is some work to be done there. I have 'popped' it out as best as possible, and now am working in a 'bog' circle! Apparently Aliens are responsible for crop circles as well as bog circles[88]

Christams Pudding gives energy!!!!! MORE WORK DONE!

The front righthand guard was badly dented, and possibly needed removal! I was so worried, I even started searching for a replacement.

Now I am a mechanic - NOT a panel beater....BUT! I have been known to hit things in a fit of rage before...so I thought I'd give the metal massage a go!

1st up I stripped the affected area;

Download Attachment: Stripping the affected area.jpg
42.89 KB

2nd I assed the damage;

Download Attachment: Dent revealled.jpg

3rd - I belted the guard with the hammers and dollies and smoothed the area;

Download Attachment: Panel work 1 small.jpg
47.25 KB

Download Attachment: Looking better.jpg
29.86 KB

4th I added a light coat of filler to smoothing off;

Download Attachment: light coat of filler.jpg
39.37 KB

5th Then I sanded and putty/primered the panel - AND SMILED[^]

Download Attachment: Finished panel.jpg
44.06 KB

As you can see it was a hell of a lot easier than replacing the panel! Now I know my work is borderline acceptable, so I have decided to drop the car off to a 'Professional' panel beater prior to the final paint being laid - to ensure reasonably straight panels.

Anyway, a new engine package is going in - 2.6L Mitsubishi carby engine and 5 speed. Should thump out approx. 150hp, and the engine I bought (got it for $100) has a steel crank, heavy duty block, forged pistons, big valve head, match ported manifolds, heavy duty clutch and was built by a Mitsubishi gear head.

it will be a tight fit, however the car is a factory auto, so the tunnel is larger and the Mitsu bo and Ford 4 speed bos is basically identical in size and dimensions.

The problem will be the length and height of the engine. Height no problem, as I intend on fitting a 'cowl induction' hood scoop, how ever the length a conundrum. I could cheat and cut the rad support...however I will fit a worked 1600 Kent if the 2.6 is lame, and I am loathed to modify the engine bay metal too much.

Anyway it's better to have difficult decisions about how I am going to fit all this horsepower in that it is to worry about being under powered!

Oh and and I scored a locked up RS2000/rallypack diff - complete for free from my brother! The housing is painted gloss black, and it has the bigger Mk 2 brakes! So I guess my arse is sorted then[;^)]

More pics and updates as it happens!

The colour will stay the same as the primer colour as it is a 'cheeky' and lively colour that represents the nature of the small Mk 1 perfectly.

I am still unsure as to the stripping though...originally the Mexico stripes were the sure fire way to go....how ever a possible shift to a 'LeMans' liverey Gulf racing colours might be the final choice. It is the right blue and orange stripping would look very cool.

Inside I am using the original light tan colour on the dash and doors, just to make the whole thing contrast well.

Cheers,

my dad was involved in the dropping (well placing) of a gemini on one of the opostles (spelling??) off the south coast in the 70's? it was placed there by a helicopter so they nearly had the right idea... better still they left it there, as when they went back to get it, it was too windy and dangerous for the helicopter...

maybe dropping a gemini might be a little harsh......how about the project is accelerating as fast as the depreciation of a Camira?

Either way, I am now in Sydney for the weekend and my mind is back in SA thinking about how the little blue booger is going. I promise pics as soon as I return.

Cheers,

RJ

P.S. - No references to TOP GEAR Australia please [;^)] you cheeky bugger!

Speedy G is now up for grabs! I have found/bought another Mk 1 Escort 2-door that is painted, trimmed and a lot further down the road than old Speedy is.

You've all seen the progress of the car, and know how much work has been carried out. If you want it then head to the 'For Sale - Whole cars' section of this forum for all the details.

Stay tuned....new thread regarding the 'Rumble Bee' will be up very soon....here's a sneak peek preview;

Hey that's a beast....but not mine! Mine has reverse lights, painted window area's and a front bumper (his holes are filled).

Maybe this mystery car was the inspiration for my new car? Another thread regarding the car has been started. Speedy G shell is up for grabs as mentioned on Ebay.

Cheers,

RJ

I've been into Escorts for 9years now and I remember most that I see, it was one of a few that used to be around the area. Was entered in a show also once, I probably have pics of it somewhere from the show.
It's been more like 7years since I've seen it. I remember I tried to buy the blue Mk1 on that site before I bought my Mk2. It was a nice little car. It sold and ended up getting CA18ET power back when I was in high school 2001-ish, and last I heard it had been stolen and I've not seen than in 5yrs or so.
