Rhys' Mk 2 Escort - Broken.. AGAIN!

My new MK2 i picked up from a country town 3 hours from Newcastle... previous owner had it as a project car and gave it to hes son.. who then sold it because it didn't have air con... lame i know. They rebuilt the 2lt and they cut the rust out of the body and gave it a full respray which is only 16 months old so it still looks smhick and it goes really well, they have re done the interior and looks nice n tidy. currently looking for some rims and some twin 40's so yeah... here it is.

Hmmm you think... id actually like a nice set of 17's but i know the chances of them going on are close to none... id settle for some 16's but yeah finding a nice pair is hard. but dont get me wrong i dont dislike my rims i think they r nice but yeah tad bigger would be nice [:x)] Im lowering it this Wednesday and Thursday a new exhaust goes on...And hopefully by then my new custom plates will be in - 3SC0RT - I'll take a few new pics once ive done a bit to it.

Yeah thanks,
I Think im going to order some twin 40's from Small Fords Spares... the thing is im tossing up between the twin 40's or 45's... id actually like to hear people opinions on what people recommend... it's a daily driver but im more interested in power more so then fuel... i guess untill my whole pay goes on Juice for the car lol then it's a different story. Ive read some people inputs and people think the 40's run best and still have good fuel effeciency,.. correct me if im wrong but is the bigger your webs go... you start to go after about 3500rpm well i mean you start to feel the power... im probably wrong but yeah id like to have power from start to finish.

So tell me what you think..
Thanks Rhys.

So Twin 40's ey.. Cool i think i'll get what i was going to then ey well id love to supercharge it or even turbo it but seeing im a P Plater and Stupid gay rules come in i cant have either... which isnt so bad i can still have some good power with 2lt and the mods you can do to that... i know i'll kick every other p plater with a Hyundai Excel lol or pulsar ... very fun car to zip around with... good beeing a 5 spd to.

Well Guys sorry it's been ages ive been a bit delayed on what i wanted to do. So far since the beginning ive got a 2 and a quater Inch exhaust full system with a 4" tip (Nice N Shiny lol) ive also got a nice %15 tint on it, i went to get the car lowered today at Pedders and the Guy sent me away because he wanted yo do some more research on the car on how low it can go before doing it...Sorta pissed but yeah he said come back next week and do it so yeah, he mentioned getting the guards rolled but im not sure i wanna risk the paint job, i so far haven't got a mark on the car except the front headlight theres a mark there. what do you guys think? is it safe to roll them? i can go another 2 and a half inched on the back and 1 and a half on the front. Anyways im now after a set of twin Delortos but no1 is selling! [8~2] if anyone see's a seller or is selling please msg me! [88] I'll show you a pic of the interior anyways seeing i haven't completed the body yet :)
2007/07/06 19:07:52
Inferno115
aslong as they use a heat gun when they roll the guards, there is very little risk that you will damage the paint, its worth paying a bit more for a good job to be done, then 500 to fix your paint job, and definately go as low as u can!

[xx(] i figured once it's lowered in going to only have one passenger lol. other 2 can walk lol [88] Also thinking of doing a SR20 Conversion soon... just need some round about prices for it including labour lol (lack of knowledge) so if you know pricing please tell :)

Looking good man.

I don't take people in the back of my car because of the scraping issue hahaha

That is a really nice blue. Awesome looking esky!

2007/06/15 10:19:25
3sc0rt
Thanks guys, yeah blue is very nice, different but yeah, and as for the scrapping yeah i think 2 people and 2 subs are enough lol. is it possible to get springs in the back suspension of a MKII 1980? its got the other sort of suspension is it butterfly suspension or whatever? i just find it scrapes when i change gears likr it dips down, i just thought maybe if i got harder springs in the back i could prevent it a bit more... because im going to lower it but i was thinkin should i lower it and put springs in? Hmmm tell me what you think. [%]
2007/06/15 18:03:22
Inferno115
as far as i know it wood be a lot of freaking around to put springs in, just maybe get some heavy duty leafs, and if its bouncing round like a boat when u change gears possibly need shocks? mine aint evn that low and will scrape with 2 ppl in the back, you will have a few dramas when u lower it that much, but dont let that hold ya back itll look damn good
2007/06/15 18:31:52
Tassie RS
get yourself some rs2000 or mk2 panel van rear leafs shouldnt set you back too much and are heavier duty than standard then get shockies, because as inferno said i rekon your shocks are dead. i used to have 8" wheels with 215 tyres on the back of my 2dr, had rs springs and just some cheapo munroe shocks and that didn't scrape till i went fast or had fat ppl in it, lol!!!
2007/06/15 19:03:11
3sc0rt
Yeah well i wanna have a nice tight suspension... no bobbing around and all that. im prepared to pay a bit for shocks in the back but yeah.. i want it slammed and not scraping when i shift.
2007/06/15 19:06:01
3sc0rt
yeah, when im taking off quick or yeah going fast... it scrapes... i just wanna not scrape as much! [8~2] yeah ill try get some better leafs
2007/06/15 19:10:37
2lt_Scort
Have you got your gaurds rolled? Try that first, second remove the big satelite dishes from your boot to save some weight (this will also help speed your car up)

Otherwise go for some stiffer rear springs, dont expect much improvement if you pull some 28yr old springs out of an RS2000 because they'd be fairly well rooted if theyre original, well will be in the respect that your hoping to stiffen rear up enough not to scrape with people in it.

King springs can sell you a new set of rear springs, or pedders or someone, but if you get it extremely stiff just to stop it scraping with people in, then when your driving by yourself it will skate all over the road. Putting bigger rims on and lower is going to cause some scraping in any event unless your wheels are perfectly designed with correct offset for your car.

Mine scrapes now and then over decent bumps if I have back loaded up, but to get around this I chose not to load the back up- I didn't build the car to cart people around but I know that if I have to its not going to kill my tyres and will only scrape a little.

So I guess what Im saying is theres always going to be a compromise....

Rhys

2007/06/15 19:41:06
3sc0rt
Well im not going to be carting people around anymore lol i was actually affraid of rolling the guards due to paint chipping or what not, anywhere professional that could do it? id love them rolled and as for the bigger rims im just goign to keep the 15" Performance rims and slam it. Pedders is doing my lowering and i think i may do some springs, and how do you mean rolling around like a skateboard? i dont wanna get speed wobbles n die man! id like somthing that wasn't so floppy in the back. The guy rekons 4" at the rear and im worried that if i go that low im going to F*&k my tired asap so i want to prevent it.

The noise is awsome...from what i had to these 45's.. the sound is sooo soo different, from the mechanic to home they were tuned nice and running well without popping and what not, but the next day thats when they started to be a pain... i'll fix that up and it should be ok, other then that they are going good guns, Raced a VL Commodore smashed it from start to finish, i think im going to need a better cam though... when i take off they are slow to get going but higher revs its awsome... ive had some recommendations like Kent FR32 anyone recommend any others?

2007/07/27 05:34:08
2lt_Scort
Thats around the going rate for a head job but if you can do it yourself or know someone else that can you'd be suprised how much cheaper you can do it. Most of that money is paying for labour of the mechanic, then paying for a cylinder head joint to test head for cracking/warping etc and a re-face.

Rhys
2007/07/27 08:43:21
dominic_au
That price is outrageous, take the head off yourself, take it to a cylinder head shop get it checked out, buy a new head gasket bolt the head back on and away you go. the mechanic is charging massive amounts of labour for very little work.
if the head needs a full reco you may aswell put all the unleaded gear in it at the same time. it shouldnt cost any more than $500.
the last head that i had reco'd cost $350.
stop paying for labour.
thats what is costing you.

Bad luck on the blowout mate, that sux big time. Perhaps you should CC the head and plan on a particular comp ratio for your new cam. Remember, cam, carbs and compression = all go hand in hand. I took over 2 mm off mine just to get my cam working sweet. That presented new problems however and I had to get an vernier cam wheel to pick up the slack timing belt. Another story....

Are in the Newcastle area? If you need a hand with anything, I've got the tools and know how with taking off your head. I've built at least 3 of my own pintos in the past and it's not hard at all. Dont pay a mechanic big bux to do it, save the labour costs and buy a cam and then fit it all up at once!!

3sc0rt
Yeah mate i am in the Newcastle area, Belmont to be exact. Im taking the head off this Friday and then the work begins the following Monday. Thanks to my tax check i can fix it + more .

Also one question what do you guys think about vents or maybe a small scoop on the side of your bonnet where the carbies are...? Not for looks (well maybe a little) but to get more air into the carbs. I thought if you had a scoop or vent of some sort just above the carbs they would breathe alot better but thats just what i thought. Tell me what you think. Ok hows this... Mechanic tells me its a blown head gasket between 1 and 2 so a few mates come around and we take off the head... the Gaskets are fine not one thing wrong with them... I've sent the head off to be shaved and port polish, but im puzzled on what the hell is wrong with the thing! Any idea's Main things were had no power down low sounded like i was on 3 cylinders bit smokey, (not Blue) like it was running rich, had a few idea's like the valves or somthing but what else could it be???
2007/08/17 13:37:05
BLOWNMK12L
Black smoke = carbs fueling
No power = could have been gasket could also be tuning or problem with carb
Running on 3 = could be fouled plug being that its got black smoke coming out the back

= check out your carbs maybe put a kit thru them the webers I had were a pain in the ass and had no power down low. pissed the weber off and put my new carb on it was like a different car ! you could rebuild the carbs yourself and the kits probably cost less than $100 to do both. It only takes a blockage or problem with one barrel of the carbs for the whole lot to run average. Have you got a glass fuel filter some where between the tank and the carbs ? as these are good cos you can pull them apart and empty the filth, if you do check it.

Yeah Fari enough but i had the mechanic go over it and the Tard said 1stly it was the leads... so i changed and then it was still rooted so i took it back and said look over it better... he said gaskets and then took hea off and its fine, carbs got the jets cleaned and tuned about a week before the stuff up with the car... so im in the situation where i wanna piss it off.

Right there with ya fellas lol. If only they werent so damm good when running.

3sc0rt, it sounds entirely possible that your mechanic sux. I would suggest always go with tests, not guesses. EG compression test, ignition lead test, etc.

Best of luck with your diagnosis.. Say, is that points ignition I see there? I would be looking seriously at that subsystem.... Nothing has given me more trouble on a pinto than the ignition. I recently spent a week of spare time, replacing everything on the RS ignition system, only to find a set of perfectly good looking points were the problem. So yeah make sure its working properly.. And consider upgrade to electronic ignition as a good option.

Not that its of any use to you now... but fwiw, if you did the headgasket between 1&2, you would really really know about it. Damm awful noise, and top speed of 70Kph limping.

3sc0rt
Yeah Thanks Vanman
The Noise was consistant from - 100KM so i'll check out what you said and see what's going on, at one stage i was really considering the electronic ignition but i dont know how much fidling around and how much costing it is..? How much am i Looking at and how much fidling around? [88]

electronic ignition, i picked up for 170, for a crane cams one, think they sell at speed shops for 190 or so from memory, as for fiddling around suprisingly little, any compotent person can do it, onli problem i had was my dizzy didn't have any writing on it to suggest what brand it was so i coodnt follow the intructions to find the right shutter, but with a bit of trial and error all worked first shot, sorry for the essay, hope it helps though

Well i Guess it's another thing ill have to add to the list.
Plus i need a new starter motor keeep screaming and screeching at me... then yeah dump the cossie in hahahaha Sounds easy doesnt it?

Anyways The head going on tomorrow or Friday depends and i spent a nice big $1200 on the head and got it all at family rates, good having a mechinist in the family lol and its suposeably worked to hell... Ported Polished Shaved Spring, Valves, Stage 4 Cam. you would think it would go after spending that moneys on it. Anyways im sure ill have another problem when that goes back on... there always is with my escort... you fix one thing 2 more break.

Yay i have the head back, was supose to have it on Friday and also put on but my cousin is a lazy mofo and didn't pick it up due to him going to the pub and forgetting to grab it. Anyways he has just dropped it off to me now. If all goes well i'll have it back in on the weekend.

How so? Last thing i want is another problem. What sort of problems will occur if it does run into problems.

And Inferno i cant wait... Having withdrawals from the Escort... been driving a 2005 Mirage around with gay bling rims.. it's my girlfriends... no power what so ever.. i feel like im a woman driving it, it's embarressing [8~2] but yeah once shes in tip top condition im going to make some vids and take some pics and share with you guys.

it might be alright if it's just a thin coat but it could possibly make the surface not flat, anyways i had a similar problem i used the gasket as a template and painted exactly around it, but when i put the manifold on it must have been sitting slightly on the edge of the paint and was causing an air leak, so i scraped it all off, having said that just have a few spare inlet gaskets on hand, if you run into trouble just whip it off and scrape the poo poo off, also is a pain trying to keep it outta the ports as well

Hey Hey guys, head is back on!, but ive come into some pain in the arse problems.. went to put the webbers back on and the chrome off the webber has chipped off a fair bit where the manifold goes on and it would leak if i just wacked her on, so i gotta get some liquid poo poo to seal her up or im just going to strip the chrome off to bare nothing lol... also didn't realize but the spark plugs are all Bent!... rang up a few spare part places and all they seems to know is the RS2000 2lt plugs. Does anyone know if they will fit the MK2 1980 2lt? i thought they would but i dont wanna screw around.

After the plugs are bought and the webber/manifold problem is sorted the car shall be going... next step is Dyno, ive just got to find one lol.
2007/09/29 20:54:48
mud
Spark plugs you need are NGK BP(insert desired heat range No. here, 6 or 7 perhaps)FS, e.g BP6FS.

What has the chrome come off, the carby itself or the manifold?
2007/09/29 21:21:37
3sc0rt
Manifold, where the gasket goes on.

Ok, so you guys all know the story of me going to mechanic..and him saying it was a blown head gasket and it wasn't... so i ended up working the poo poo out of my head and stage 4 cam, and anyways heads back on now, just put webers back on, hooked up the plugs and kicked her over... and wouldn't start properly.. so anyways checked the dizzy.. turned lights off.. the Fuicking spark was shooting in random places.. like the body.. the points are freaked! that was my problem.... i cant believe i didn't check that before sending her off... so tomorrow im getting new points and whacking them on and then i shall be good guns.. atleast i got my head worked out like a mofo.. if i knew it was just the points in the dizzy i wouldn't have done anything to the head... [:x)] but now it's done so im not all angry... but im gunna tear my old mechanic a new arse hole. [}:)]

I just made my second electronic dizzy from magna converted to esc bosch dizzy. because i have made one before only took me 3 hours the dizzy only cost $44 from local wrecker.

She will run sweet with elec dizz and those webers. Keen to see what your dyno result you get.. Mine has never been the same since removing the twins

Shes running! i started her for the 1st time and.... BANG! back fire lol little bit of excess fuel lol, scared the shiit out of me. Anyways i kicked her over again.. and she is soo bloody lumpy and loud... seeing it's night time im leaving the tuning till tomorrow or Friday. but atleast she goes and with changing the idol it was just running nice but you could tell it needed a massive tune.

Finally [88]

and Greenmk2 i cant wait untill i get her on the dyno... seeing i just got some cash from selling my ps3 i can play around some more and tweak some stuff just before i put her on the dyno.

Ohh k... i've been tryin to tune these 45's and they are a biitch...

at first it was going good way way down low but up high putting.. checked the point.. gave them a bigger gap, now it runs better.. then the twins wanted to be difficult... i think im going to just go get it tuned and dynoed next week... and yeah go from there.

it's driveable just sounds like poo poo when you try punch it.. so i guess ill be driving like a granny til next week

take it to john collins dyno tune at broadmeadow you will have to book and wait a while but is is excellent with webbers

Yeah, just having a test run this afternoon. When it's low revs sounds really bad, but once you rev it.. it starts to kick in and sound better. That's exactly where im going to take it to get dynoed and tuned, heard hes a top bloke. Also what's with the long wait with him? Must be a good guy to go with the old webbers. I dont know how long you will have to wait ring and ask him
remember his workshop was flooded and he had to get a new dyno

it's not tuned yet but giving it a little bit to see where she takes off is around 3500 onwards, but i dont know if things will change majorly when tuned... but at the moment it sounds like a bunch of fire crackers going off in a drain of water. Needs a tune asap

as soon as i get it dynoed and tuned ill definatly post the chart. Should be interesting to see what she puts out.

ok it's locked in. Friday the 26th is when im getting her on the dyno and tuned, quoted me about $300 or so for dyno and tune. He wants me to leave it there and come back in the arvo and pick it up... Pfft ill be there with my camera taking some footage [:x)]

John Collins is doing it and apparently a good tuner with the carbies he got flooeded in the newcastle floods and hes booked out righht up to the 26th of this month, or id have it earlier!

Sounds like its almost ready to go cruising mate. Johns a good tuner. He did mine when it was pintoed on twin 45,s. He was very thorough. Found 30+ hp in it at the time and was very well priced.
Previously i had used Scotts dyno when it was at Mayfield and was a waste of time and lots of money.

Yeah, hes recomended by so many people and not one and not bad thing said, i hope he makes some HP out of my setup, i'm sure ill be happy with what it makes and what he can pull out of it.

OK, Electronic ignition is in, But... when i picked it up from the auto sparky... it was soooooo soooo soooo much more out of tune it's not funny.. before it was driveable but now it's freaked. They messed with the idle, now it idles at 1500. Pulled the hood up and looked at the webbers.. the far one was leaking fuel... literally dripping out. turned the idle down and it doesnt like it much but ey, got a mate comming tomorrow to help me even out the beach webbers and then next Friday on the dyno for a tune. im cheering once that is done because ill play with these webbers for a while untill i get bored and need more power... but i've discovered a problem with my starter motor now... its screaching at me![:(!] i think it might be the ring gears... or the teeth are not meeting properly... let's hope it's that and not the missing ring gears. i dont want to have to mess around with pulling out a gear box and what not, but i can see that it's going to happen anyways.

Anyways im almost there with a tuned twin 45 webber set up... i can almost touch it im that close... [:x)]
2007/10/18 19:44:22
Inferno115
i wood say that when the auto elec did the electronic conversion on the dizz they have retarded the timing more than what it was before and have turned the idle up to componsate,(mark ur dizzy inline with the block for a fail safe incase something goes wrong) turn the dizzy anti clockwise very small incriments to advance it and see if it pings (sounds like a chain rattling in your extractors) its a matter of trial and error just turn it up till it pings then back it off a fractions, with such a large cam its gonna need to idle reasonably high any way, i have to run 98 octane and pro strenge octane booster in mine as the timing is real high to get it to idle and drive nice because the cam is to large for street
2007/10/18 20:30:49
greenmk2
Your needle and seats in your webers could be worn if their leaking fuel out the throats. My old delorto's use to leak like that. The dyno tuner will fix all that up anyway.

I recken with the mods you have you should crack 80KW easy [(#)]
2007/10/19 15:51:13
3sc0rt
i would love 80Kw+ The guy i bought it off said she had about 66Kw in her when he sold it to me, so i hope to crack the 80's... Ahhh the 80's

at the moment it runs sooo bad like it's hard to not stall it and has no excelleration or power behind it.. all the fuel is spittin out of the far webber.

Needs fixys asap [(#)]
2007/10/19 17:33:18
Inferno115
if it is spittin out the throat of the carby, as i said before possibly timing to far retarded, mine did it till i advanced it, mind you that 350 had quite a few leaks of its own

Fiuck!!!!!!!

Definatly not the result i wanted..... I dropped my car off at john collins dyno today to get tuned and dynoed at 8:30am whole day on my car which was awsome... went back at 5:30pm and he hadnt tuned it... there was somthing stopping it from tuning properly... so after a few dyno runs we were starting to cancel out some problems, dizzy was lined up and ok... cam was lined up and fine... plugs were new but there was a suss movement with the linkages, it had a "added" part welded on.. but john said wasn't enough to cause a major delay although they were not twisting at the same time. anyways he didn't solve the problem and i didn't get it tuned and i didn't get to see how much power the old girl can put out... im booked in for next week to see what he can fix.

But....

On the way home driving it it was running like a dog in low revs but in the mid to high it was a little rocket... i didn't flog it at ALL. but when i hit the freeway at 100 the car was starting to die like it was losing tune by the minute...

And then come the BANG...

lost a cylynder and i could have sworn i dropped 2. The car was losing speeed couldnt excelerate just kept pitter pattering along.. head lights dimming on and off and i had to literally rev it and drop a gear to sustain speed...so you could say the day i thought my car would be sweet fine and ready to thrash... was the day i was devoed and my car is even more bullshiit worse then before...

so ill keep you guys posted on what goes on... thats if i haven't set a light to the car. I've got a vid of it on the dyno but im not sure if its worth putting up. Maybe if you guys wanna see it just tell me and ill upload later.

Cheers Rhys

Yes Ben, Have been prepared for the worst. I Think i would have sorted it out getting done not at a tuner or a mechanic and just got some mates or a few guys off here to help me but... i wanted to see 1st off how much power it has, and have a almost perfect tune... and just having it done in like a day aswell, i need the car really bad now due to stuff comming up.

Anyways i attempted to drive it to the dyno and yeah... drove about 5 mins and i knew i wasn't going to make it.. and i didn't want to make anymore problems. so i called a mate who had just dropped hes 400HP R33 skyline to Turbo Technics in town and made him come pick me up with hes trailer... SCORE! and then took it to John Collins Dyno. So i Made it ... Just.

Went in and said G'day and he had a HQ ute in there making 340KW Very cool... but the escort should be going by tomorrow fully tuned. if all goes to plan [%]

96.9 HP, and he still has work to do on it. And also found out i have Twin 40's not 45's So im a bit angry but at the same time im keeping my cool. theres so much to do to get this running better!

it's running so much better then it was but he thinks there is potential for about 80Kw or so, i had spent enough money on it in one day so ive left it for another time.

I need a scanner to get the Dyno Chart ill do it at work.

But... i came into some trouble today when i was running uber late for work doing 91Kms in a 60Kms zone, i actually thought it was a 80 zone but copper didn't take that excuse anyways i was gunning it around a corner and sort of sliding around and next min i see a blue SS with a FIUCKING side cammera and lights are instantly on, so i thought to myself... you have all this new power and your going to lose your license if you get caught... so stupid me dropped down a gear and charged it... turned into a side street and parked... and sort of waited for him to just come pull up behind me... so im waiting waiting waiting... and nothing happens for a few minutes... so i turn the car on.. and next minute the cop car comes drifting around the corner and stops behind me... [xx(] Cop gets out and says "mate dont try and evade the police when you have a car that is soo dam loud" anyways he tells me the whole thing how fast i was going blah blah... then starts to defect... [}:)] Exhaust.. ILLEGAL, Lowered.. ILLEGAL and then hes says "pop the hood" so i pop the bonnet and he calls me out... "is this turboed?" i sort of paused... and then said.. "No Sir it's Not" He Says ... "Supercharged?".... "Um no it's not sir"...he sort of looks a bit confused and said Hmmmm ok... i said It's N/A with Twin 40 Webers. He nods and says "Ohhhh Ok, it's in good nick.. How much did it cost you?" by this time im thinking just Fiuck off you diickhead my boss is going to rape me and your just beeing a tool... i just shut him up and said $500, then he looks at my tyres... Looks inside... A Fricken 30 mins has past.. then he writes up the ticket for 15 and over and said i lose my license due to beeing a red P Plater for 3 months.

I was so bloody piissed off that he defected me and then said my license is suspended... But what can you do... i was speeding and i got caught... JUST.

But i shall still be attending the Classic Cruise this month.

Thats bad luck. They just don't like those red p-plates.

So how do you get the defects inspected? Is it just a pink slip inspection or carrington rta depot? A while back i was driving along foreshore and a cop on a bike pulled me over took my licence and told me to follow him to the carrington pits. I got done with excessive noise,no cam belt cover. So i just fitted a reducer tip from two and quarter to one and half. that done the trick.

I wouldn't be spewing about the twins. Look inside your carbs and see how big your ventures are. I had 48's and the ventures were 34mm but my bro had 45's and his were 38mm. What you have done to the ports will have a huge effect on the power. Along with the cam, valves, tuning etc..

I Have to goto Carrington within 10 days, the ventures are bigger, not sure on size but they were a big help. im not worried about the size that much but yeah. To add to the bad news i think i have fiucked my gear box, it sounds like when i change gears like um... a marble or a rock or somthing is rolling along floor boards or somthing.. but 10 times louder... there isnt so much crunching just a suss noise. in high revs it starts to happen aswell.

You must be stressed. One thing after anather. I thought i may have damaged my gearbox in my 300z today. I had run with a 200sx and i crunched 3rd in a big way.. I had the stereo up to loud [:o)]

You should be able to find a gearbox cheap if thats what it is. I never had any dramas when i had the 4spd.

Dont they love picking on p-platers. They defect the your car thinking it may turn you off having a modified car. WRONG! It gets poeple like me more keen to make the car street legal. When they give my esky the stair i smile cause my engineers certificate has the RTA carrington stamp of approval

Bad run of bad luck or what...

My Mrs car which is the back up of my car never working... has been smashed in a crash, on the way to Sydney on the F3 i aqua planed and lost control of the car and off we spun, Hit the M3 BMW in the middle lane, spun around and into a vito van, so basically writen off... the cop declared it noones fault. Insurance covers it all thank god. so the escort is broken, the mirage is gone... all ive got is a Ford Fiesta lone car lol

Ok.... Bad news. Bottom end totally fiucked. Piston Fiucked. Head Fiucked... so im pulling the peice of poo poo 2lt out and putting in a 13B N/A, Would appreciate anyone whos done a conversion or has a 13B already in a esky to give me a few pointers. I've priced a 13B Bridge Port with RX4 Box for $1500, but in terms of all the other stuff, manifolds, modifications etc give us a shout. Some tell me not to touch the rotor but its cheap easy power... What do you think?

That's a real shame man. I know how you feel though!

As you said rotors can make good power, but just as another option to consider (if it's your thing), you can get front cuts with 20v Toyota donks in them for a decent price! They go hard and rev really well too.

Best of luck with it mate and sorry to hear about your bad luck.

I was wondering how your car was going. What the hell happened?? [:0][V]

I have been in a brigy 13B rx4 it was a todal loose woman in traffic and was a beach on fuel but it was very quick.. One of my mates done the conversion and it was a lot of work steering column changes new engine mounts, but it also was a turbo job. You may have seen it in newcastle in the past was a light blue mk2 pano.

You could look into zetec?

Very sorry to hear about your engine Rhys.

i reckon zetec or sr would be better even a n/a sr is cheap enough then turbo it later , then you already have good cams and compression for off boost pick up with a good tune of coursesome of my mates have rotas and although they have heaps of power they do use a bit of fuel and are a bit women like ( tempermental)

Yeah, The Fuel isnt a huge issue, ive got a daily which is awsome on fuel. The Temper of the rotor can be no more trouble then what the freaking 2ltr with 45 webers, i can put up with whatever the rotor can throw at me, my escort has been driving at the most of 2 weeks. poo poo kept breaking every 5 seconds, and i would upgrade that and then the next broke... so im after some nice big power so ive decided to get a 13b Turbo Bridge port. I May aswell go get some nice power and not half do it... Ill be doing a bit of research into it and weighing things up but i think im set on the rotor. Although i had been tossing up between the SR20 for a long time, but i love the loud yappy noise of a rotor... lol

The conversion part will be done as much as me and friends can do, but i think ill get a Rotor Mobb to finish it off. Im not a %100 yet, just have to do a little more research. Ok, haven't been on here for a little while due to bottom end of
my car giving in... and losing license but.. ive come to a decision im going to go SR20 N/A because im on my P's (believe me id love a turbo) i was tossing up between the 13B and SR20 and did research and last thing i want is another engine playing around on me all the time. SR20 seem to be alot reliable and can be pushed very hard. So now all i've got to do is find me a mob who can convert for me. [%]

Rotaries are a wonderful thing to spend buckets of cash on. If you don't have buckets of cash, that will be an issue for sure.

I reckon the SR20 would be a nice engine.. But every time I have priced up the conversion, I end up thinking.. yeah but for that sort of money I could build up a very tough pinto.

Good luck with your decision.

Yep, We never learn. When i say i waste i mean, the pinto can only go so powerful, The SR20 N/A pretty quick, but then also i can eventually Turbo it. On the other hand the pinto can go very quick but it can only put so much power out before its at it's max. I just want a engine i can keep building to be quicker and faster and still be trustworthy.

I have started to think along the lines of what horsepower I need, as opposed to previous more is better plans.[:I] For the driving that I like to do (which is mountain roads.) I have decided that 160Hp at the wheels is all that I will require to put a big on my face.

So with that in mind, I chose a mild pinto turbo scenario. I think it will cost as much or less than a good NA SR transplant, put out a bit more power, and still have the cosworth upgrade path if I get bored with it.

Don't get me wrong, I think the SR20's are great donks.

a sr20 wont really cost to much more then 5gs. You can buy a good runnin SR with gearbox and wiring for round 3gs. Andy does a kit for $550, that gets you mounts for both gearbox and motor, now get someone to wire it up and then get it tuned.

Its all about engineering, thats where the money goes.

A turbo pinto i dont think will get under 5gs especially if you want 200kws.

unless you can do alot of it yourself the sr will cost waymore then 5g's by the time you factor in all the small things like fuel pumps + related plumbing etc, new exhaust, intercooler, tailshaft etc it will add up real quick. not to mention the old escort diff wont stand a chance.

my engine before i broke it was fine, i just know you can improve the pinto a fair bit more then just getting Twin webers and a big cam and a few head adjustments, just wondering how.
2008/03/29 07:10:38
BLOWNMK12L
Over Size Bore std block and offset grind crank with some new rods you take stroke it to 2.4L with your head and carbs it should be about as good as a pinto can get, I have a old Fast Fours and Rotaries DVD here and there are three datto 1600's CA18DET, FJ20T and L20B Stroked to 2.4 and the stroker wins ! Twin Carbs and Single overhead cam just like the pinto.... Plus you get heaps of torque so by the time the turbo has spooled up your already a car length or two ahead.

2008/04/28 15:22:48
Vanman
The question seems simple enough, but the answer is not.

Put in really simple terms, the way to "more" HP in yer natcho engine is through either increasing its cubic capacity, or raising its compression, and ideally both. And thats assuming it already breathes well and has effective fuel and ignition systems that will support high RPM.

However, making more HP puts more strain on components in the engine. The Pinto's known weakness is its rods, and the next weakest bit would be pistons as far as I know. The block and crank can take a good deal of punishment as is, but if you want to up the compression then rev its nuts off, you will need better rods n pistons. Other things to consider would be ARP fasteners to hold everything together, and high quality bearings, etc. You could also consider a high volume baffled sump, and some snazzy synthetic oil, which I assume the engine builder should know about when they measure tolerances, etc.

The thing that makes it interesting, is that its all up to you, and what you want the engine to do. Are you looking for something fun, or completely crazy? Do you build with stock parts and respect the engines limits, or do you peel your wallet inside out to build something wild? And if so.. What are your diff and gearbox plans lol? And how big are yer brakes?

If it were my engine, and considering that its already had a let go, I would probably be building for reliability this time round. let's face it, a running escort that can't eat silvia's at the lights is better than a broken one in the garage.

If you want to pwn turbo's and V8's.. Buy a bike. [:x)] Mine is old & stock, cost me 5 grand, and pulls a 12.67 quater in almost any conditions lol. I love watching them try.

Just my thoughts dude.....

Thanks Vanman, Id like a quick powerful torquey engine... got a celica 5 spd and getting a LSD once the engine is built. I dont wanna mortgage a rebuild but im happy to spend but yeah not overboard. So Maybe look at strengthening everything and going from there.
2008/04/28 17:47:13
Vanman
Ok cool, well with that in mind, I would be hunting for some sierra pinto rods.(mildly stronger than escort ones) And I would probably push my luck with new stock pistons. Adding some ARP fasteners would be good insurance. And if its not already planned, then definitely get your bits balanced.

let's assume the block at the very least got honed, and possibly a mild bore. That would increase your cc's very mildly, and a skim of the head, (just enough to ensure its flat) should also very mildly increase compression. tiny improvement, but not enough to stress things out.

Stick with a cam thats not going to encourage you to rev out over 7K rpm, and I would expect the engine to give you some fun mileage.

The next step up for me would be looking into some of the recipies ppl have posted recently.. Like the semi forged Mahle VW pistons mated to Datto 1.6 rods on a mildly stroked crank.

Good job on the diff mate! Doesn't take much to bust one of these diffs, so you will eventually be able to change one in your sleep. I'm almost at that stage haha.

Great you have a replacement centre and back on the road.
If the blown gears aren't trashed out by flying bits and look in re-usable condition, depends on the ratio of course...save up for a LSD unit and have fun without the worry of turning your spider gears into a Chinese 3D puzzle !

Hey fella's I've Just recieved my tax back and i am trying to prepare the car for a Dyno tune & trying to make things easier for the Tuner and in the long run me.

I've got some twins and i have a linkage setup witch drives me insane. in the pictures a couple of posts above you can see it's a simple sort of setup which seems to operate on one side of the carb which pulls on the bar and then opens the other side up. Now when a few mates have had a look at it and tried to give it a bit of a tune up it seems to be opening up but one carb opens before the other and therfore not giving me a even tune.

Is there a linkage setup that anyone can recommend to me that will be strong and give me a even response? so when i give it some the linkage pulls down to open the twins up at the same time and not give me a slight delay? I know it's hard to tune twins but i know the linkage setup is SH!T.

As long as it gives me some good response ill be happy, because i have to beat Ben's (BLOWNMK12L) Yellow RS. He seems to think he's got me [:x)] I've got some cards up my sleave Ben lol

i just had a look at ur engine bay pic, i see what u mean about a weird linkage/throttle setup.

see if you can gather parts to make your own / find a complete linkage like mine:

from what i can tell without having them on the car, the throttle opens from the center, opening both carbies together.

to be honest i thought this was really the only setup around, never seen one like urs.

hi 3scort,

I got a complete linkage setup from redline (from memory) that looks similar to the previous post designed for webbers. with this setup my twins have been runnning for over a year without the need for a re-tune.

Sterling, i haven't seen one like mine before either. That arm that comes down int the centre would do a even job on pushing down but where it's located does that affect a sway bar position? How much was the one from redline Michael? And is it using a Hex Bar or round Bar? from my experience the round bar is junk because it eventually slips when you accelerate therefore losing throttle.

Hey guys,
Brake Booster has had it and is the reason my vaccum is so sh!t. just wondering has a MkII brake booster for sale? or in your experience what have you done when your booster has stuffed up? take it somewhere to get fixed? or easy to fix yourself? it's the diaphram thats has stuffed up i think.

Blow into the diaphram where the inlet line goes, and see if it leeks air. don't pump the leaver at the rear and have break fluid go everywhere.
Reconditioning it is the safest bet.
A second hand one will just do the same thing once you start giving it a hard time.

G'day Rhys,

I just had my booster overhauled by Power Brakes in Adelaide for $250. Not all units are servicable as some cannot be pulled apart without being damaged. I now know what to look for in a servicable one, but it is hard to describe. If you look on the outer edge from the bracket end, you will see a series of small indents that run around the edge. These indents hold the inner bits to the outer casing. Look on the inside of the indents and you will see the rear plate that the indents lock in. Look on the outer edge of that plate and see if there are matching cutouts so that is you spun the plate around a few degrees, the cutouts will match the indents and the unit will come apart. If there are no cutouts, you are on the hunt for a new one. I hope that make sense and you may need to clean it up to see them. If you want, I may be able to get a pic as I haven't refitted mine as yet. I say may be able to, cause it's all painted black and I am not sure how well they will stand out.

You need to watch with the boosters, as there was a change at some point and there are slight differences in the length of the bracket and also the length of the arm coming out of the booster. I know, cause I brought a second hand one, which I never fitted because it was different. You can have it for the $25 it cost me + postage if you want it. I was assured it worked, but never tried it and I this is one that can not be serviced. It has some surface rust on the outside but I'm sure it will clean up.

Another alternative is to try ABS. When I rang them a month or so ago, they had a change over unit available which was about $250 + postage. If mine wasn't serviceable, I was gonna grab it.

Cheers

Tim

Hi guys, im setting up vaccum advance on my 2lt and i've got twin 40's and just wondering where abouts you connect it on the carb? can someone help me on where abouts to put it?

Im also thinking about gettin a electric fuel pump. Is there any major advantage to swappin from a mechanical one? im just finding my mechanical one isnt pumping hard enough. i look at my filter and there is a dismal ammount going through it and im thinkinh it may be effecting performance. if i could grab some opinions on that it would help stacks . Oh and how much for one thesee days?

Also does anyone with twin carbs have any trouble with there venturies popping out? mine seem to pop out when i give it some.. very very annoying. there must be a bit of presure behind it to pop them out and i cant seee why its happening [:(!]

Cheers Rhys

Well... it seem's i may have to pull the twin 40 webers off and go back to the 32/36 for awhile due to my twin's running like a fat lady. Im having endless trouble with the venturies, tuning, soft mounts, linkage & vaccum advance.

So i am going to pull the twins off and put the old trust 32/36 back on and have it running better and way more effcient on fuel that's for sure!

My objective is to get the twins off and rebuild them so i can minimize all the dam trouble in having. Now i intend on getting new jets's, Venturies & choke size. Now im not a %100 on what jet's, venturies & what choke sizes are needed to achieve what i want [?] I'm looking for power more then every day drivability as it will now be a weekend toy or track day/hillclimb.

So the theory i've been told is that if you run bigger venturies it means more power and if they are smaller venturies it means more torque? & with bigger chokes you can make it run as good as 45's? (Please correct me if im wrong guys) & with the jets in them already they were put in when i first got it dynoed but since then i have got higher compression so i dont know how you can tell what size jet's you require to get the perfect match!

My setup is a:

- 2L Pinto
- 10:1 Compression
- Shaved head (cant remember exactly how much, im pretty sure it was a big shave because he warned me of blowing a head gasket [xx(])
- Port Polish Head
- Double valve springs
- Stage 4 Cam (3500-7000RPM)

The turning point for me where everything went bad was when i got my car dyno tuned for the second time and he changed the Venturies to a smaller size because he claimed them too big. So from then on i had troubles ranging from venturies poppin out into my filter boxes all the time, poor performance & a huge pain in my arse! [}:)] So now i am going to take the time to rebuild them the best way possible and have them complete for the Dyno tuner ready for hes tuning.

If anyone can give me some suggestions on Choke size, Venturie Sizes, jet sizes, Methods etc that would be a great help. I haven't rebuild carbs before and i dont really know the formulas to get what i want and hoping maybe someone on here know's what im lookin for [:x)]

Mk2_2dr_2L
Get rid of the Vacuum advance. I got rid of the diaphram and put a screw through the two plates in the dizzy for the vac advance to lock it up. Then you solely rely on the mechanical advance, which is only about 6 - 8 degrees.

You want the total ignition advance to be about 30 degrees.. I made a mark on my crank pulley at 30 and as long as it totalled at 30 max it was fine, so static was around 22-24 degrees

Cheers,

Damion

In the pinto building book by Des Hammill hasn't got exactly your setup in the starting point jetting but this is what it does have

Jetting for standard 2000 (40mm webers)

34mm chokes
135 mains
f11 Emulsion
190 air correctors
35 acc pump
40 f9 idle jets
4.5 aux venturis

timing 12 deg at idle 38 deg total, but it doesn't state 'all in' RPM

Jetting for modified 2000 (45mm webers)

38mm chokes
145mm mains
180 air correctors
f16 Emulsion tubes
40 accel pumps
45 f2 idle jets
4.5 aux venturi.

So somewhere in the middle would be the sensible starting point I think. As for the vacumm advance, there are two options for retaining it, and retaining it will be better if getting used on the street because basically the motor makes more power at higher manifold vacuum levels, meaning less throttle at cruise, less fuel being used. The standard vacuum port for the vacuum advance is drilled into the carburetor, sitting just behind the butterfly on the venturi side, so at idle there is no vacuum applied to it but at light throttle the butterfly edge rises above it exposing it to the manifold vacuum. The other method which is possible but i don't favour as much is to hook it to the manifold directly. this means the advance mech will see vacuum at idle and the idle speed will increase a fair amount, to correct it obviously you turn the idle speed down on the carbies, but this can cause the butterfly to be to far away from the transistion port which is after or part of the idle mixture port, this can result in a quick stutter when you get on the throttle from the closed throttle position (every braking corner for example). This isn't always the case, and to be honest I can't remember the porting arrangements in the 40's so i'm not sure how they will respond, Hope some of this dribble helps you!!!

Thanks Mate, Yeah it does. It seems to me it would just be better to go up to the 45's. The guy from Euro carb said with my setup and what i want to do he said im better off going up to twin 45's

So i'll be taking off the twin 40's soon enough and smacking on some 45's! Thanks for the info though King! It helps to know anything about twins!

Hi Guys,

Just wondering if anyone has hit this problem before with twin carbs before, my aux venturies spit the dummy and fall out of the carb into my filter boxes and they are fitting in ok but are loose inside the carb, one venturie the metal spring on the side has fallen out completly and now will slide in but not stay in. I checked all the others and they all click in but are easily able to slide out. Ive got a funny feeling the venturies in there are too small or im missing somthing.

Maybe those trumpets that go on the carbs help hold them in more, it seems to look that way anyway.

I took a photo of where the metal spring fell out, can you fix these or just buy new one??

Also, when changing aux venturi sizes do you have to change the main venturi aswell? or is it just the aux size that changes?

I had a problem with vaccun on one carb, the soft mounts were poo poo and there was a leak. so i had them fiddle and tuned lightly around that leak. Now that ive fixed them leak and new soft mounts the carbs werent balanced from all the fiddling i had to do to compensate for the leak.

anyhow, got it all fixed up today and tuned a bit and it's running as good as its been in the last 2 years. while driving it home i decided to give her some and it was awesome, screaming at 6500RPM in 3rd. Since driving a 1L Chirade for the last 6 months and getting into my escort it felt like i was in a rocket ship [:x)][:x)]

Next step Rego & then off to get a long awaited dyno tune.

Well not really, i had a very poor linkage setup before on a flimsy terry spring, but on this new linkage i find i can controll the throttle easier now. I like that it's a bit stiffer but thats probably because im not use to having a linkage that works lol

Just a little update on how my luck is going with the Escort...

So i got my tax back and i was all excited about going to get my car dynoed [:x)].. So i live in Tamworth and was heading 3and a half hours south back to Newcastle to get it Dynoed at John Collins Dyno Tuning.

So i hope in the car after work and start heading down to Newcastle and i get 40kms out of town and then bang... the clutch let's go and burnt out... So here i am 10pm at night stranded outside of town and NRMA taking their sweet time to get me!

So thanks to my Uncle (BLOWNMK12L) towing it to the clutch place and i got it looked at a couple of days ago, so i got a phone call yesterday telling my not only is my clutch completly busted my gearbox is totally rooted aswell [8~2]

I've officially broken everything once [B)]

So im getting a new heavy duty clutch put in and replacing it with another 5spd sierra box! (thanks again Ben)

What will go next?

Thought i might refresh this thread seeing it's getting a CA18DET conversion done.
A few months ago i picked up this Project car with a CA18DET in it and most things converted but the tricky stuff not yet done. It's a MKII 4DR and it's just got too many doors for my liking. So i thought ill pull all the fruit off this 4DR and put it in my 2DR MKII.
The 4DR is really straight and with next to no rust in it, but it had been butchered at the front guards to fit a monster sized intercooler in, also had an alloy drop tank & welded roll cage so the car wasnt going to be easy to get registered and overall needed more work then my MKII if i just pulled all the stuff over from it.

What i'll be taking from it:
                                       - CA18DET with ECU & box
                                       - Hilux Diff
                                       - Falcon Brakes
                                       - Slotted Rotors
                                       - Surge tank
                                       - Fuel pump
                                       - 16" Rims
Now i made a deal with a mate of mine who owns a Tyre & Suspension shop who does a whole bunch of other performance mods too that if he swaps all the gear over from the 4DR to my 2DR he can have the shell of the 4DR (with my old 2dr wheels and suspension + Diff housing) because he wanted a track Car/Advertising. So hes going to put a v6 into the 4dr and track day it and then park it out the front of hes shop to maybe drum some more performance business, so for both of us its a win win situation.

So everything is sitting in my 2DR now bolted up & ready to be sent down to Kyle @ Kyles Conversions in Newcastle. I'll take some more pictures when i get time but for time beeing ill just upload some old ones i've got of the two cars and just some random ones of the escort seeing its been awhile :)

Cheers Rhys
