Diff center is on order Marty, got a blackline helical and they said I should have it early next month. I have the rebuild kit sitting on the bench waiting for it. Got cracking on today and the car is now off the trolley and on stands. It was a bit sketchy getting the car off it without a hoist.. had to do the good ole leg press under the car to lift it up a bit while my dad positioned the axle stands . Lucky it weighs next to nothing! The diff housing completely buttoned up now and wont be coming back out unless something dire happens. Also Marty you must be clairvoyant because that was exactly my plan with the bump stops. Hacked the top dome off and gave them a clean up then coated with raptor so they don't look shabby. You'll see in this shot the tramp rod bolt isn't in yet, the suspension will need to be at ride height for the bolts to go through nicely and that will be them buttoned up too. The drivers side tramp rod needed a little tweak as it was 5ish degrees off horizonal - nothing some heat and a twist in the vice couldn't solve. And like always, it wouldn't be a proper day working on a car if there wasn't a completely avoidable mistake that leaves you fuming. So I was re-assembling the axles and I had one side done and one to go. Things were going smoothly. I put it in the vise to spot weld the retaining ring to the axle like this. And in a moment of complete bone headedness I lined up the welder and hit the trigger.... and welded the ring to the bearing . What a great idea that was! 50 bucks down the drain and now I need to pick up another new bearing next week.

Accidents happen quick draw! Don't they use a circlip to hold the retaining ring?

Interference fit using a press, tho a good tack will lock it in place goodly, added security. Part Time, I think my MK2 went thru a few housings in the days of loon driving, I did cut the dome off and then threw them away. $50 for a bearing! Yikes , mine will come from Rock Auto four about $8.50 as long as they are same in Capri mk1, tho they might have totally different diffs in USA. You can put the bolt in, just not tighten up. Don't forget to green paint pen the bolts and nuts once torqued up for that concourse effect 😎

I thought I was the only one that cut the bump stops down, I remember telling the guy at the DOT pits "thats how they came" he didn't believe me for a second Looking good under there, keep up the good work.

When I was building the Hilux axles in the escort (that was hopefully finally on the dyno yesterday) the retaining rings were pressed on and also had the clip. They were a bugger to get off and then press and fit the new bearing retainers (I made a axle puller type tool) etc. Bearing wise I always just go Timken or Koyo etc. Sometimes things just don't come down to dollars?

I've used cheap bearings as well as Timkin and haven't really noticed any change, tho back then I was twisting axles so they didn't last beyond a year anyways, plus the cheap ones most likely come from the same factory as dear ones in China. MarkA, I have a Hilux rn30 diff with a LSD but have never thought to cut it down for Escort, mainly the ratio could be a stupid 4.8 or something, if lucky it might be in the 3.8 range. If you cut yours down can you show some pointers on what you did ?

Will be giving it a full nut and bolt before its maiden voyage, it will get the paint pen treatment then . I just got my first batch of butyl mats, so that's this weekends job sorted! Got the black topped Shogun ones for the floor - $99 bucks for 4sqm. They're nice and thick and I'll test the adhesion with the floor before deciding if i'll use the same ones for the doors, quarters and roof. Anyone had any luck with keeping mats stuck to the underside of a roof skin?

That's a risky area with heat and stuff. I did a mk1 escort 25+ yrs ago with just high density foam of about 8mm thick, it was stuck with selleys contact glue, apparently it held up for plenty of years tho the trick is to have the liner wires pinch it up so it won't fall down if you know what I mean. I've got sticky back insulation to go in my mk1, just cheap stuff but unsure I'll use it in the roof part yet

Hey Deano. I've been doing the dots with paint marker pens for years. Pain when you have to take a nut or whatever off after you've dabbed it with the marker. I'm a bit anal and metho the dot off and redo it or alternatively use another colour as my second attempt code. Marty, the diff came out of a 1997 diesel ute, LN86. 41 tooth pinion, 11 tooth crownwheel = 3.73 I believe I did not have to shorten it which was the main appeal and being a 2WD already 5 stud 114.3 PCD If I was ding that under the headlining I would be going for something of quality like Carbuilders etc and I like the thought that the liner bows help hold it up

I've got 2 paint markers on most stuff already, just so that it looks like it must have come from North Geelong production line (pretend it was locally assembled) a few weeks ago. Car builders stuff sticks like...., especially with the hot air gun getting it soft beforehand, but man is it heavy. I'd bet they would stick fine on the roof. I used a little 100 mm roller handle without the roller to shape it into the floor ridges. Maybe dont go nuts like I did and put it everywhere. Just a few pieces to stop the natural vibration 9 or to seal up the weld lines ..:)) You can often buy it cheaper at Repco with RACV/members discount, than you can online from CB. Santa is bringing me a pair of Carbuilders "finally a decent pair of scissors" for $40, for fathers day, intime to do the seats with.
