Opinions please!!!

Here is my MK 1 6 dial dash top.

Purchase price $50.00 in bad state of disrepair [:-(]

Much cracking, hairline only though, bits of vinyl missing and very faded

Cost to repair and revinyl........$295.00 [8~2]

I had a thought, (I know, this may be my first...[:I])

Why not try speaker carpet....cheap, readily available, easy to work with, range of colours and I would have a ready made dash mat protector [:p]

So, to Autobahn, $15.00 for carpet 1m x 2.5m and $10.00 for spray glue (Just like on "Overhaulin' or Pimp my Ride)

This is the result.....[:u]

No worries. Looks like you've done a very neat job on it - nice work. Almost looks like heavy duty flocking!

That's quite an impressive and economical solution. Did you have to glue the old padding down to the metal base or fill in the crack with anything before applying the speaker material?

    Looks very nice, good job!

Just be careful, and get good quality carpet. I did the rear parcel shelf in my mk2 in a similar way, and after a couple of years of sun, all the hairs are going brittle and starting to fall off. Now, if you touch it, your hand gets covered in tiny black hairs, and there is a massive hand print left in the carpet.

Bloodyeck... the old vinyl was quite solid, not coming away from the padding at all. It was just filled with many hairline fractures and the vinyl was brittle. Nothing to fill in. Sprayed on glue and used high, good quality speaker box carpet/covering. Seems to have worked a treat and provided a dash mat to boot!!!

    drgrog,

Made sure that only the best was used, There is no carpet pile as such. same stuff as you would find on sub woofer boxes and uv stabilised....

many colours to choose from, I chose Black.

Very nice and a great idea[%][%], since as we all end up having a dash mat on any way. I might look at doing that also.
