MK2 Fuel Sender

Just pulled the fuel sender out of my mk2 escort drop tank and it's pretty well toasted.
Anyone know of any replacements that will do the job. Wondered if ford used them in any other models.
I have read the UK version of the sender is hard to come by but wondered if the Aussie drop tank version
Was any different.

    Why is the sender "toasted"?
    Should all be repairable.

    Hey Peter,
     
    Would be very happy if you are right on this one. Took a couple of photos of the senders current state. 
    The next question (if you believe it is repairable) is can you recommend anyone to fix it for me. Knowing
    my abilities I am happy to out source the repairs to get it back up and sending again...

    Everything is fixable. It is just time and money.
    Looks almost brand new to me.
     
    Assuming the float still works all you will need is:
    - a new seal to the tank. Any good spare parts shop or carburettor reconditioner should be able to help.
    - a new fuel filter. Any good spare parts shop or carburettor reconditioner should be able to help.
    - a new resistor card. MIA Instruments at Maryong NSW (Blacktown in western Sydney) should be able to help you with that. Or if you know a good electrician he can check the resistance wire specs and rewire using the same card (assuming it is not damaged).

    Check the instrument voltage regulator. 
    It is a "thermal" type regulator using a bimetallic strip contact to drop the voltage used by the fuel and temperature gauges. The output of this regulator is a pulsed voltage that averages down to around 5.6v rms.
    It looks like yours may have failed and placed 12v across the gauge and sender ?
    That would have the effect, on the sender, of burning it out.  The gauge may have been damaged as well.
    As a test...
    If you connect a 22 ohm (1watt) resistor from the fuel sender wire to ground (chassis) your fuel gauge should show about 1/2 full.

    Does anyone know the resistance figures for full/ empty on underbelly escort tanks. Got some new gauges and want to know if they are compatible. Thanks,

    Has anyone had a fuel sender unit repaired lately. Google says that MIS Instrument Services is permanently closed. Just wondering if there is a good alternative place?

    Regarding the fuel sender it’s supposed to be 90 ohms empty and 10 ohms when full according to Ford. In the real world mine reads 75 - 15 respectively. My VDO gauge is matched to the sender and works fine. According to VDO the sender should be 90 - 10 ohms.

    The wires on my sending unit are broken. I've put it back in the car for the time being.
    I did look for replacements and Jeep sender units on amazon were around the same ohms and had both the fuel send/return lines.
    Was considering taking a punt on one of them, just need to size a few up to get one that matches our drop tanks.

    I have noticed reproduction units for XB/XC Falcons on eBay and wondered if they could be adapted to suit an Escort. The pick up pipe would have to be cut down and possibly float level adjusted but given the XC Falcon is from the same make and era perhaps all else would work?
