where do I look for for info to verify a numbers matching car?

I am about to become a new falcon owner, how do I verify the numbers for a supposed numbers matching car? I want to know if the motor, trans, and rear end are what came in the car. All I have is the VIN and the data plate info-Thank you,

Matching numbers means the engine and the chassis number (or VIN).  On Fords these were the same.  There is no way of knowing about transmission, diff etc.

    Make it go FASTER!

Contact Ford with the details of the car, they should be able to tell you what the specifications were when it left the factory, or even the dealership if you are lucky.
They usually keep pretty good records. I found out what the specs & options were on my 2002 AU3 XR8 when I bought it a couple of years ago by making a few phone calls to Ford. Sometimes they're helpful, sometimes they're are not, really depends on who picks up the phone at the other end!
That'll only tell you the type of trans & diff it was built with, not whether they are still the original units of course.
As Gdub said, 'matching numbers' just means that the compliance plates should back-up the fact that it is the model it's purported to be & that the engine is the original block, which is probably the most important thing anyway.

    Cheers, Jason.
