Mk1/2 4age swap
Hi, I am after the Lotus twin cam look in a Escort with-out the price. Who has fitted a 16 valve engine and any info or photos?

Just followed the link for the cover, for the price of the cover I could buy a complete running motor. The look of the early 4age is what I am after.

Done some checking on the horsepower the 1.6 and 2.0ltr have almost the same output. The price on the last running twin cam I seen for sale was enough to buy a small house. Also would still need a engineer in NSW. Not really interested in club rego, Its for standard factory built cars, I am planning to modify. The RMS is cracking down here in NSW also with club rego and cars that should'nt be on it.

The 4AGE is a good choice, Toyota commissioned Yamaha to design a twincam for them so the pretty much just copied the BDA design, made a couple of tweaks and handed it over. Same bore and stroke, same valve train etc Its a small light engine you can get 160hp without opening the bottom end and with a few sump mods it will drop in using the standard engine mounts. Google Bill Sherwood 4AGE and have a read of what he has to say, also have a look on the TURBOSPORT forum its a popular swap in the UK

But the zetec has other things going for it better than a 4age in an escort. - Type 9 escort box & sierra 5 speed will bolt straight up on Zetec with the correct clutch setup, 4age you'll need custom bell housing & clutch setup to suit escort box (headache), or a theres a toyota spirit box but if they will fit without tunnel modification I'm not so sure, and may need a custom tail shaft to suit? - Ford zetec is same manufacturer so is usually easier to engineer (last i checked) than a change of manufacturer. - Toyota may have similar power but the torque is a bit different. Remember its torque that wins races! Either engine is pretty similar in type etc. And require similar work really. Id imagine the zetec being a ford engine and a common install by ford enthusiasts now, would have better resale down the track to if you do want to sell it.
It may cost slightly more to get the Zetec in but probably the much better end result once its done.

Pretty sure the BDA won a couple of races, 4age's are pretty popular in the racing and drifting scene all over the globe. The sound of a 4 pot doin 8ooo+ RPM is just magic there is a T9 bellhousing kit for the 4age some use the Toyota T50 gearbox(stronger than T9) so it would be the drive shaft that would be the main issue I guess. Its just an option worth looking into

From memory the T50 is a bit weak compared to the later T52.

I love the 4AGE engine. Its a great free reving little beast of a motor and went really well in a AE86 I had a few years ago. Also the T50 gearbox out of an AE71 or AE86 are a fairly small box so I'm pretty sure it will fit in the tunnel with minimal massaging but it does use a hydraulic clutch.

From what I have read the T50 is OK on a standard or slightly modified motor. I was also going to use a RWD motor to make it easier.

My T50 was behind a slightly worked engine and copped a lot of abuse for a couple of years until I sold the car with absolutely no issues

If you want to go 4age go for it it's your car, post some pics of the fitout........... The zetec may be a bit more expensive to initially convert, especially if you want that oh so horny cam cover (not that expensive really) however the engines themselves are, and, will be a dime a dozen in the future, I saw a whole mondeo with rear damage go for $400 at auction. Not to sure about the 4age but the front cut of other japper's like the fj20 seems to have dried up now..... Good luck with it Drew............

Ive got nothing against with other manufacturer engines in escorts (I'm putting in an F20C in mine after all!!). And the 4age has always been a pretty solid performer. I just think the extra capacity of the Zetec, and if done properly is something escort enthusiasts would be more willing to go for.
Maybe you should have bought that rocker cover? You might have made an extra $2500 haha

Yeah sorry, my memory is failing. The boxes I was referring to are the C50 and C52, which are used in transverse applications.
