Speedometer Issue

Hi all,

Just after a little guidance on my speedometer. About 2 weeks ago it started to get the big wobbles when driving (When driving at 60km/h the speed would fluctuate between 50km/h to 65km/h.

I originally thought this could be the speedo cable starting to become faulty, but after a drive last week, there was absolutely nothing on the dash. So I bought a new one from Smcka, which fitted up nicely after a little bit of machining of the gearbox end for the circlip. The cable when pulled out had seen better days, with it sitting near the exhaust the outer sheathing had started to melt.

Once the cable was changed over, I went for a spin in hope that it had been fixed however this wasn't the case. I pulled out the dash again and spun the speedo by hand and was able to see the needle move.

Through process of elimination in my mind, the other reason i can think of would be the gearbox side of the speedo is faulty? Has anyone had similar problems? Or can anyone suggest a next move in trouble shooting?

Another question about the cable routing and protection. Which side of the brake booster have people run their speedo cable? Is it possible to run it down the between the inner arch and standard brake booster then down to the gearbox, or would this stretch the cable to much?

Does anyone use heat resistant sheathing on their cable that run near the exhaust?

Thanks in advance

Adam

I know from experience that the cable can be a little tricky to seat properly into the dash itself.

If it's not fully seated then it will act the same as you have described.

When I bought my MK2 the person selling it said the speedo was broken but it just needed yo be pushed in fully and all was good.

    Good luck

    Hi Dave,

Unfortunately I wasn't able to get round to looking at the car today, as I arrived home from work after dark.

I will update once I have had a chance to try again. Hopefully very soon.

    Thanks

    Hey guys,

Was able to finally to get round to looking at my speedo today.

I was able to source the issue of the problem. The original speedo cable snapped at the point where the cable goes into the speedo drive in the gearbox.

First I made sure the cable was seated correctly in the back of the dash and then I took the cable out from the gearbox and put a cordless drill and turned it over and it ran like clockwork.

Which I then turned my attention to the gearbox side to see if there was any issue there. On my initial look I couldn't see any faults, I decided to get my skinny flat blade to see if I could see if it was filled with dirt and grit. Thanks to the magnetic end, out came a small section of the old speedo cable.

So the issue was solved, and the speedo now works.

Thanks guys for all your assistance on this

    Hi guys,

Instead of starting a new thread I thought I would continue on with this as it is related to my dash.

Its time for an upgrade, After fixing my speedo issue above, it has been working well since then, until about 3 weeks ago when everything else started to fail on it. Temp sensor went and now my fuel gauge has stopped working.

So with this in mind and wanting to monitor the oil pressure, water temp and the fuel gauge (I don't want to run out of that) I have thought about going aftermarket with a dash cluster.

I have been looking round between different brands and I have decided that I like the look and sizing of the VDO Cockpit Vision Gauge set. I found them on gauge-shop.com.au in Newcastle. Has anyone had experience with these gauges before?

The setup I am looking at getting is

    85mm Speedometer - 0-200km/h
    85mm - Tachometer - 0-7000 rpm
    52mm - Oil Pressure - 0-500 kPa
    52mm - Water Temp - 40-120 degrees
    52mm - Fuel Gauge
    52mm - Voltmeter

I am also ordered a Bright 6 display for indicators, high beams etc. Looks pretty good from the photos i have seen.

I took a template from my current dash and I made templates of the gauges to see what way would fit best.  This is what I was thinking would be the best

With my fuel sender not working now, the kit comes with the Tube type sender. My question is has anyone modified their tank with a sender like this? Is it easy?

If so what is the depth of a standard MK2 Tank, as the there are many different senders determined by the depth of the tank?

There looks like another sender that is a lever arm type setup.

Once I have all the gauges I will take photos on my progress and start a thread in the projects page.

    Thanks in advance

Steering wheel will get in the way a bit, but should look good if you can live with that.

I had time this afternoon back in the car and overlayed the templates on the current dash.

With the wheel i have it doesn't impede the viewing of the gauges at all. It was something that I did over look before till rallyrs mentioned it.

I have recieved the info back from the supplier.

Everything is okay, I have to send them my speedo cable to have a Hall effect sender fitted to the standard cable and my current fuel sender to be calibrated to the VDO gauge.

I am in the middle of my masters degree exams and have my first kart race this weekend so I haven't had a chance to get the parts off the car. Should have this done in the next 2 weeks.

They said it should be approximately 1 week to get these 2 parts modified/calibrated. After that it's straight into getting these into the car.
